Summary Dariya Dubovka To the monastery in peace. In search of secular roots of modem spirituality EUSP Press, 2020. - 208 pp. ISBN 978-5-94380-313-0 This book focuses on the secular and religious practices and how they are implemented and intertwine in such a religious institution as an Orthodox monastery. My approach is based on the questioning of the fundamental anthropological conceptions like agency or charismatic authority via considering them in the light of detailed ethnographic observation. I have spent nearly a year living in several Russian Orthodox monasteries as a temporary worker. My methods were mostly participant observation and deep semi-structured interviews The first chapter is about the economic base of the contemporary monastery restoration. Since most of the churches and monasteries were closed during the Soviet time and their buildings were redistributed among other owners such as museums, collective farms, homes for the disabled and so on, — first inhabitants of the returned buildings had to restore former monasteries to get them suitable for both religious and human lives. Scarcity of resources and gigantic scope of work made inhabitants pay attention to one religious virtues and ignore others. Thus, the virtue of obedience that combined everyday duties with spiritual growth stood ahead. In the contrary, prayer — that is the most monastic practice in common sense — became negligible as it didn’t help monastery revival. The second and third chapters develop the idea of historically determined virtues. Some of the Christian virtues are much more
compatible with modern and secular sensibility than other. For instance, Jesus prayer along with different forms of Orient meditation are perfect to perform on the self-isolated conditions of a big city. Contrary, many forms of body ascetic (extreme faster, bearing chains,
Summary 207 self-castigation) seem to vanish into history. This part of the book looks at economic roots and social imagination disposition that allow one religious practice to be reborn and another to be forgotten. The culmination of the story about suitable monastic practices may be found in the fourth chapter. There I wrote about tough anthropological and generally speaking human problem of free-will humiliation. Some religions closely associate humiliation with spiritual self-transformation. Should an anthropologist follow their lead and describe observed situation of one’s abasement as valuable spiritual experience as one’s culture says or should she question the naive view of a humiliated person. This starts a huge problematic of agency and how we understand it and what happens if our perception is changing over time. I brought time as a new actor to the old discussion of agency. Finally, the fifth chapter considers probably the most disturbing issue for the secular mind. How is the charismatic authority possible? Or to put it in other words ֊ how reasonable grown-ups willingly reject their responsibility on their lives and trust their assets and souls to one human who they believe is a saint. Beyond this common question lies the theoretical one about the nature of charismatic authority. I analyze it on micro-level through everyday speech acts of a monastic community. My findings show that on a daily base charismatic authority functions via constant change of perspective from current time to the future and that it resembles the mechanic of communication with a super-
human agent. In conclusion, I put a question: what will be the productive way to study religion anthropologically. In my opinion the only way to do it is to analyze both religious and secular practices since the first does not truly exist anymore without being intermingled, clash against, or simply opposite to the second. The most interesting questions inside this framework can shed the light on todays’ secular/ religious dispositions as some of secular and religious practices go along with each other, some stay unnoticed while the rest seem utterly incompatible. Perhaps the va riety of religious/secular practices combinations will point towards more productive way of thinking about former dichotomous world of believers and nonbelievers.
