The internet, the ultimate weapon of freedom and modernity has, in reality, taken us back to Medieval societal forms of public shaming, social control and feudalism. This is the claim Jakob Linaa Jensen makes in his book, where he uses the medieval period as an analytical prism to discuss the social, political and economic logics of social media, algorithms and the platform economy in contemporary society. Taking us through digital pillories, online witch hunts, village-like mutual surveillance and a new digital feudalism, this book draws on numerous examples of the medieval logics of a society where the majority of the world’s population are online. Based on twenty years’ research and thinking on Internet, society and democracy, this is a book about the wilful or unconscious exercise of power. It is a must read for those who want to understand contemporary, digital society and engage in a critical dialogue on the future for society.
