Summary Osip (Joseph) Mikhailovich Kovalevsky (Polish Józef Szczepan Kowalewski (28 December, 1800 / 9 January, 1801 — 26 October / 7 November, 1878), a Rus sian scholar and educator of Polish descent, philologist and antiquity researcher, expert on Mongolian culture and Buddhism, one of the founding fathers of aca demic Mongolian studies in Russia and Poland. He studied the history, languages, literature and ethnography of Mongolian peoples, is the author of the first dicti onaries and study guides for academic research of the Mongolian people and aca demic works on Buddhism. The first academic work "Information on the life and letters of Longin” was published in 1822. O. M. Kovalevsky was a Candidate of Kazan University (1820 or 1821). He headed the first in Russia and Europe department of Mongolian in Kazan University (1833-1855). Full Professor (1835-1860) and Dean of the Historical-Philological Faculty (1837-1841, 1845, 1852-1855) of this University, of Warsaw Main School (1862-1869) and Warsaw University (1869-1878). Rector of Kazan University (1855-1860). Corresponding Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences for History and Philology of Asian Peoples (from 22.12.1837), Academician in Ordi nary (in service, working at a department) — lull member of the Academy (from 4.12.1847). Honorary Member of the Asiatic Society in Paris (1839), Full Member of the Imperial Society of History and Russian Antiquities at Moscow University (1840), the Royal Danish Society of Northern Researchers of Antiquity (1844) and the Vilna Archaeographic Commission (1868). Honorary
member of Kazan University (1878). Recipient of the Demidov Prize of 1846 for the three-volumed "Mongolian-Russian-French Dictionary” (18441849). Privy Councillor (1872). Translated The Histories by Herodotus, Parallel Lives by Plutarch and The Metamorphoses by Ovid into Polish (1823). Founder of the academic Mongolian studies school. Among his students are such orientalists as D. Banzarov (c. 1822-1855), A. A. Bobrovnikov (1821 or 1822-1865; author of the "Grammar of Mongolian-Kalmyk”, the book that was awarded the Demidov Prize), future academician V. P. Vasilyev (1818-1900), G. Gomboev (1818 or 1822֊ 1863), N. I. Zommer (1824-1827) and others. There are three basic stages in the biography of Kovalevsky — the Vilna stage (1817-1824), the Kazan stage (1824-1862) and the Warsaw stage (1862-1878). The Vilna Stage (1817֊I824). In 1817-1820 he studied at the faculty of lite rature and liberal (fine) arts of Vilna University, specializing in antique Greek and Latin philology. During his studies he became friends with Adam Mickiewicz. Upon his recommendation, in November of 1817 he entered a secret patriotic and educational student Society of philomaths (Gr. "lovers of knowledge”). On No vember 16, 1823 he was arrested on the charge of being a member of a secret soci ety together with A. Mickiewicz. According to the resolution signed by Emperor 433
Alexander I on August 14th, 1824, he was sentenced to exile in Kazan under special surveillance and was registered as a staff member of Kazan University to study Asian languages. He left Vilna on October 24th and arrived in Kazan on December 25th, 1824. The Kazan Stage (1824-1862). In 1825-1828 he was registered as a Candidate in the Pedagogical Institute of Kazan University. There he studied Tatar, Arabic and Persian. His first teachers of Asian languages at the University were 1.1. Khalfin (1778-1829), F. (F. I.) Erdmann (1793-1862) and A. K. (M. M. A.) Kazem-Bek (1802-1870). Due to the preparations to open the Department of Mongolian philology at the initiative of Rector N. I. Lobachevsky the University Council sent Kovalevsky and A. V. Popov (1808-1865), a firture Mongolian and Kalmyk studies expert, to an academic field trip to the Transbaikal area (with the base in Irkutsk) for four years to study Mongolian and procure the necessary literature for academic work and teaching. On May 26, 1828, Kovalevsky set off to Siberia. The travel spanned five long years. During this time, he visited Mongolia, China, Buryatia. Coming back to Kazan in the March of 1833, he presented a report on the results of his travel — he studied the Mongolian language and literature, the history and culture of Mongolian peoples, including Buddhism; he transcribed and translated Mongolian texts, collec ted Mongolian and Buryatian folklore; he learned the basics of Mandarin Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit and Manchurian; he procured Mongolian, Chinese and Tibetan manuscripts and woodcuts for the
University library (189 Mongolian and Tibetan treatises in 1433 books, 48 of them hand-written) and 1272 articles of Asian culture (a collection of Chinese, Manchurian, Mongolian and Lama costumes, utensils and art pieces); he prepared the "Mongolian Grammar”, the big "Mongolian-Russian Dictionary”, translated the epic poem called "The Epic of King Gesar”. During his travel, the scholar met the Decembrists in exile. In the same year it was decided to open a Department of Mongolian in Kazan University. O. M. Kovalevsky became the Head of the Department. Classes started in September of 1835. In 1855 O. M. Kovalevsky became the Rector of Kazan University. In 1860 he was dismissed from this position due to student uprisings in Kazan University on personal directives from Emperor Alexander II and became a staff member of the Ministry of People's Education. O. M. Kovalevsky's entire work during the Kazan stage was directed at stu dying little-researched problems of the history and culture of Mongolian peoples and attracting attention of the academic community to these problems. The fun damental works and study guides developed by him in the sphere of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan studies were renowned as some of the best scholarly work in the history of the Russian and global Oriental studies. After opening the Faculty of Oriental Languages in Saint Petersburg University in 1855, the Department was moved to the capital. Its first Head was A. V. Popov (currently it is the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of Saint
Petersburg State University. The Warsaw Stage (1862-1878). IN 1862 he moved to Warsaw, taking all his library and archive with him, including the six-volume description of Buryatia, Mongolia and China, with the intention of publishing these materials. He took the position of the Dean of Historical-Philological Faculty of the Warsaw Main School (which replaced the University, discontinued in 1831). 434
In 1863, as a result of the Polish uprising, 11 out of 14 volumes of the expe dition diary of 1829-1833 were tragically lost. The same happened to the materials on the history of Catholic missions in China, a significant part of the personal cor respondence, lectures on the history of the Ancient East, translations of books on the history of Buddhism and Ghengis Khan from Mongolian. This became the rea son for his refusal to do any more Oriental research. In the Main School he deliv ered lectures on the history of the Ancient East (including China, India and Persia) and Greece, and for upper-year students he taught early modern history. In 1878 Warsaw University celebrated the 50th anniversary of O. M. Kova levsky's academic work, considering his travel to Buryatia, Mongolia and China, when he was awarded a diploma of honorary membership in Kazan University, to be its beginning. In Kazan Kovalevsky married a Russian woman named Anna, of Orthodox Christian faith. Their children considered themselves Orthodox Christians. The two elder sons became famous: Nikolai Osipovich (1840-1891), physiologist, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Rector of Kazan University in 1880-1882, Pavel Osipovich (1843-1903), painter orbatile scenes, academician of fíne arts, Professor of the Arts Academy. Except the sons, Kovalevsky also had a daughter named Maria. Kova levsky was a polyglot: except his native tongue, Polish, he also spoke Russian, La tin, Ancient Greek, English, French, German, Tatar, Arabic, Persian and Mongo lian. O. M. Kovalevsky died on October 26th (November 7th), 1878, in
Warsaw University (Poland, a part of the Russian Empire at that moment), within a few minutes before the start of a lecture. His funeral took place on October 31st at the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw. After one year, his son Pavel Osipovich visited the grave of his father and erected the currently existing monument with the following engravement: "Here lies Józef Kowalewski, privy councillor and former Dean and Professor of Imperial Warsaw University, famous orientalist, in loving memory”. In 1833 Kovalevsky's widow handed over all of her late husband's papers to the library of Vilna University. The unpublished handwritten legacy of the scholar is mostly kept in the library of Vilnius University (Lithuania), Saint Petersburg Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Archive, the archive of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (Saint Petersburg) and the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan), as well as the archives of Moscow, Irkutsk and Warsaw. Most handwritten books brought by Kovalevsky from Buryatia, Mongolia and China are stored in the manuscript fund of the library of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of Saint Petersburg State University. The largest unpublished work that has been preserved as a manuscript is "The History of Mongols”. Kovalevsky's "Mongolian-Russian-French Dictionary”, published by him in the mid-19th century, even in the 21 st century remains the most complete collection of Mongolian words and expressions and is widely used by contemporary experts. Kovalevsky's main work on Buddhism is "Buddhist Cosmology” (1837). Books, woodcuts
and manuscripts of the peoples of Eastern Asia that were col lected by O. M. Kovalevsky and A. V. Popov during their travels became an impor tant source base for Oriental studies in Kazan and Saint Petersburg Universities. The "Catalogue of Sanskrit, Mongolian, Tibetan, Manchurian and Chinese Books and Manuscripts.” has left a mark in the history of the world's Oriental studies. |

The unpublished handwritten legacy of the scholar is mostly kept in the library of Vilnius University (Lithuania), Saint Petersburg Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Archive, the archive of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (Saint Petersburg) and the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan), as well as the archives of Moscow, Irkutsk and Warsaw. Most handwritten books brought by Kovalevsky from Buryatia, Mongolia and China are stored in the manuscript fund of the library of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of Saint Petersburg State University. The largest unpublished work that has been preserved as a manuscript is "The History of Mongols”. Kovalevsky's "Mongolian-Russian-French Dictionary”, published by him in the mid-19th century, even in the 21 st century remains the most complete collection of Mongolian words and expressions and is widely used by contemporary experts. Kovalevsky's main work on Buddhism is "Buddhist Cosmology” (1837). Books, woodcuts
and manuscripts of the peoples of Eastern Asia that were col lected by O. M. Kovalevsky and A. V. Popov during their travels became an impor tant source base for Oriental studies in Kazan and Saint Petersburg Universities. The "Catalogue of Sanskrit, Mongolian, Tibetan, Manchurian and Chinese Books and Manuscripts.” has left a mark in the history of the world's Oriental studies. |
