Summary This volume is dedicated to Pyotr Yevgenyevich Kornilov (1896-1981) — an art historian, a museum curator, a bibliophile, and a collector of fine art. From the 1920s to the 1940s, Kornilov played an outstanding role in the research of artists working at that time, and his contribution to supporting them was immeasurable. He was born in a provincial town of Simbirsk, and, almost immediately, his family moved to Kazan, — the city that became the place of his personal growth. In the late 19th to early 20th century, Kazan established itself as an important geopolitical location, with its thriving manufacturing industry and cultural development, but most importantly, remarkable for its Kazan University a third large educational institution to be founded after Moscow and Saint-Petersburg’s universities. Kazan was a city of various research centers dedicated to exploring the areas of chemistry, law, archeology, literature, and history. Pyotr Kornilov, then a 16-year-old student of the Kazan Preparatoiy School, visited Moscow for the first time, where he engaged in discovering the extensive collections of local fine arts museums. The impressions and knowledge he gathered examining those collections provided him with an impulse to study art history. His studies were interrupted by the political events taking place in the country, and young Kornilov was drafted into the Red Army. He had spent two years in Siberia (1919-1921) before he could come back home in Kazan and find employment at the local museum. Kornilov aspired to be an art historian, and in 1922 he decided to commit
himself to this career path. To accomplish his goal, he went to study at Petrograd University. Having received his diploma in 1925, Pyotr Yevgenyevich returned to Kazan, where he started working as a curator in the Central Museum of Tatar Republic. His active years at the Kazan Museum were remarkably productive. Alongside with his colleague, Pyotr Dulsky, he organized solo exhibitions of the most important artists from Moscow and Leningrad; for the first time in the curatorial practices taking place in Russia after the revolution, the exhibitions were accompanied by illustrated catalogues, that contained information about the works and publications by specialists from all over the country. For many of the artists that participated in exhibitions curated by Kornilov, these catalogues were the first publications in their careers. This was an important part of constructing the language of representing then-contemporaiy Russian art, a rare experience considering the complications in the political climate of the country. There was no other example of cultural engagement in Russia that could compare to Pyotr Kornilov such level of attentive work and productivity in the field of exhibition curating and publishing, not in the museums in the capital area or in provincial towns, which speaks volumes about Kornilov’s innovative ideas; ideas that have been proven and tested by curatorial practices in museums of that time. Pyotr Yevgenyevich was uniquely engaged in various forms of art historical academic traditions. In 1927, he participated in an expedition to Central Asia to study
traditional forms of art and architecture in Termez, close to the Afghanistan border. In 1930, he accepted an opportunity to work at the Bukhara Museum as a head assistant of the institution. Kornilov engaged in the museum and academic work in Bukhara Museum until 1932, the year he was invited to become a chief curator of the Prints and Drawings department of The Russian Museum in Leningrad. Kornilov worked at The Russian Museum for 22 years: he initiated numerous exhibitions and publications about artists, led a meticulous work of cataloguing the collection of the museum, and developed the research and academic principles for art history. His contributions became remarkably crucial to artists that struggled during the Siege of Leningrad during the World War II when his support helped them survive through years of famine and deprivation; he rescued their works and stored them in The Russian Museum, and even organized discussions about works of the artists that remained in the distressed city. After the war, Kornilov became a faculty member at the Academy of Arts at the Department of Russian Art History, where he taught generations of distinguished Russian art historians. In the 1950’s he started writing memoirs of his experiences with artists, some of which were published in monographs, compilations, and chronicles. Throughout his long and prosperous life, Kornilov published two of the most impactful monographs in Russian art history: one volume about the history of etching in Russia (1953), and another on the topic of what is better known as the “Arzamas school” of the
19th century (1947). Furthermore, Kornilov was the author of approximately 300 publications. The life of Kornilov was affiliated with Russian fine art, its history, and artists. In our volume, we feature the most notable pieces from Kornilov’s collection that has been forming as a result of his distinguished career. Almost all of these works were gifted to him by artists and active members of the art community that Kornilov sustained his friendships with and whom he cherished dearly. Most of the texts and artworks are being published for the first time.
