Zusammenfassung: | Formed in the late 1970s, Medu Art Ensemble forcefully articulated a call to end the apartheid system's racial segregation and violent injustice through posters that combined revolutionary imagery with bold slogans. Advocating for decolonization and majority (nonwhite) rule in South Africa and neighboring countries, Medu members were persecuted by the South African Defence Force and operated in exile across the border in Botswana. This book features nearly all the surviving posters that Medu created between 1979 and 1985. These objects are exceedingly rare, as they were originally smuggled into South Africa and mounted in public places, where they were regularly confiscated or torn down on sight. Offering new insight into the conceptual framework of Medu's working practice, this volume examines the continuing relevance and impact of its poster production |

Offering new insight into the conceptual framework of Medu's working practice, this volume examines the continuing relevance and impact of its poster production Geschichte 1979-1985 gnd rswk-swf Antiapartheidbewegung Südafrika (DE-588)119024831X gnd rswk-swf Plakat (DE-588)4046198-1 gnd rswk-swf Botswana (DE-588)4007857-7 gnd rswk-swf MEDU Art Ensemble (Gaborone, Botswana) / Exhibitions Posters / Africa / Exhibitions Anti-apartheid movements / Exhibitions MEDU Art Ensemble (Gaborone, Botswana) Anti-apartheid movements Posters Africa Exhibition catalogs (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog Art Institute of Chicago 27.04.2019-02.09.2019 Chicago, Ill. gnd-content (DE-588)4145395-5 Bildband gnd-content Botswana (DE-588)4007857-7 g Antiapartheidbewegung Südafrika (DE-588)119024831X s Plakat (DE-588)4046198-1 s Geschichte 1979-1985 z DE-604 Byrd, Antawan I.
