Zusammenfassung: | The aim of the book is to convey a sense of the experience of foreign workers in a host country with a focus of Africana people in China. The aim is to highlight the pleasures and challenges subjectively experienced, with an emphasis on the interplay between individuals' sense of agency and the structures in which they are embedded. I begin with an exploration of adaptive ambivalence: the interplay of initiative and compromise alongside the emotional vicissitudes that arise. Then I lay out the features o fmodernity and the ways in which it facilitates the current role of capitalism and globalization. Carefully explored are the ways in which dominant ways of thinking such as capitalism influence individuals' dreams, aspirations, and compromises. The tension in China is between features of modernity that can facilitate much needed economic growth and service provision, and at the same time, an antipathy toward modernity-driven issues such as cultural diversity and innovation in the political sector. The following chapters focus on the history of African persons in China and their contemporary experiences within the context of self-making. I end with some speculative thoughts about the future of Blackness in China. --From introduction |
