Zusammenfassung: | "Assembled over the last four decades and still growing, the Mary and Cheney Cowles collection of Japanese art is one of the finest in private hands in North America. What began for Cheney Cowles as an almost casual interest in collecting early Imari ware evolved, over time, into a passion for Japanese paintings and calligraphy. This volume focuses on what the authors found to be a compelling, recurring thread within that variety: a predilection for visual poetry. Occasionally, the text or image will illustrate or allude to a specific verse; more often, the relationship to poetry is more intuitive and rooted in a long-standing pictorial tradition. From the meditative serenity of Soei's White Herons and Reeds (early sixteenth century) to the heartwarming lyricism of Yosa Buson's Visiting a Friend in Plum Valley (1781) or the frenzied energy of Tomioka Tessai's Admiring the Moon from a Grotto (1916), the paintings illustrated in this volume suggest, rather than specify. Like the resonant verses in classical Chinese or Japanese, rich with nuanced layers of signification, the pictorial images invite the viewer's full attention and participation to complete their meaning"-- |

Like the resonant verses in classical Chinese or Japanese, rich with nuanced layers of signification, the pictorial images invite the viewer's full attention and participation to complete their meaning"-- Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Sammlung (DE-588)4128844-0 gnd rswk-swf Kalligrafie (DE-588)4073168-6 gnd rswk-swf Malerei (DE-588)4037220-0 gnd rswk-swf Japan (DE-588)4028495-5 gnd rswk-swf Painting, Japanese / Exhibitions Calligraphy, Japanese / Exhibitions Art and literature / Japan / Exhibitions Painting / Private collections / United States / Exhibitions Calligraphy / Private collections / United States / Exhibitions Cowles, Cheney / Art collections / Exhibitions Cowles, Mary / Art collections Art and literature Art / Private collections Calligraphy, Japanese Calligraphy / Private collections Painting, Japanese Painting / Private collections Japan United States Exhibition catalogs (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog Portland Art Museum 13.10.2018-13.01.2019 Portland, Or. gnd-content (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Japan (DE-588)4028495-5 g Malerei (DE-588)4037220-0 s Kalligrafie (DE-588)4073168-6 s Sammlung (DE-588)4128844-0 s Geschichte z DE-604 Graybill, Maribeth (DE-588)1220849685 edt Kenmotsu, Jeannie (DE-588)1220849871 edt Morioka, Michiyo 1949- Sonstige oth Kim, Sangah edt Berry, Paul 1950- (DE-588)140046119 wat Mostow, Joshua S. 1957- (DE-588)136548881 wat Ōki, Sadako (DE-588)136365558 wat Shimao, Arata 1953- (DE-588)1065923805 wat Portland Art Museum (DE-588)5079865-0 his |
