Beschreibung:Caption title: Biographical sketch of the life and character of John Paul Jones, Esq. - Date of publication supplied by Shaw & Shoemaker. "This account is extracted from the journal of an officer ... by one, who witness to, and ... wounded in it. He has lived to witness another distressing war ... (Copy right secured.)"--verso of title page. Evidently published during the War of 1812. - Extracted from Nathaniel Fanning's Narrative of the adventures of an American navy officer, who served during part of the American Revolution under the command of the Com. John Paul Jones (New York, 1806). Text begins "John Paul Jones was born at Selkirk, in Scotland ... on the 23d of Sept. 1747 ..." Another text with the same title begins with the line "At a time like the present, when so many distinguished characters of all nations offer themselves to our notice ... it will not, we presume, be unacceptable to the generality of our readers if we present them with the faithful history of a man, (chiefly written by himself). - Not to be confused with another text, published under the same title and purportedly written by Jones. That text begins "At a time like the present, when so many distinguished characters of all nations offer themselves to our notice ... it will not, we presume, be unacceptable to the generality of our readers if we present them with the faithful history of a man, (chiefly written by himself). - Shaw & Shoemaker, 20079. - Shaw & Shoemaker, 23223. - Shaw & Shoemaker, 28950. - Wood-engraved vignette of a ship on p. 48 is the only illustration
