EDUCATION ! PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS Every four years, adult Americans have the opportunity to express their views about the direction of the country by voting for its leader. Since 1788, the citizenry has gone forth in an orderly and dignified manner to decide who will have the responsibility of wearing the moniker, the World’s Most Powerful Person. Like many aspects of the nation’s history, its elections have had their share of behind-the-scenes activity and drama. This work is an examination of each of the presidential contests and some of the unusual events surrounding them, such as the backroom convention deals, compromised candidates, campaign strategies, and major effects on the outcomes due to such inventions like television and the internet. In some cases, a swing of just a few votes to another candidate could have had a profound effect on America’s future. The reality is that presidential elections are now and will continue to be a work in progress. With all of technology’s advances, there will always be a few missteps along the way. However, the people and stories that compose America’s election history have made it an aspect of the country’s past that provides a fair share of examination from both the inside and out. Highlights of this book: • A non-partisan history of America’s elections • A learning tool, nòt written to support a specific party or candidate • Provides background information on how candidates became nominees Mil Ní taught American history for thirty-one years to students at all levels of the educational spectrum, from elementary school to
college. His technique of using the events of the past to show how they impact our lives in the present made him a popular classroom instructor and guest speaker. After the inception of No Child Left Behind, he averaged a success rate of more than 80 percent on mandated testing where the majority of his students were at or below the poverty level. Henry is a twotime award winner of Who’s Who Among America’s Classroom Teachers. Following his retirement, he has written Black History: More than Just a Month, Christmas with the Presidents, and What They Didn’t Teach You in Your American History Class.
