Summary:"Karl Tirén (1869-1955) collected yoiks among the Sam (Lapps) of Sweden from 1909 to 1916, and published a great deal of his source material in 1942, in Die lappische Volksmusik. Tirén was a stationmaster by profession, working in several places in the north of Sweden. He is regarded s a Swedish pioneer in his field. No one before him had systematically collected yoiks, although several people were collecting Swedish folk music at this time. The main part of the book gives and account of Tirén's fieldwork. He actually undertook two kinds of field trips. In the winter he visited markets held in parish centers, because many Sami gathered for these events and Tirén could easily met yoikers there and record parts of their of their repertoires. He could also take the opportunity to announce his forthcoming summer visits to mountain areas. On those trips he would meet reindeer-herding Sami and members of their families. He travelled over a vast area: from Lyngenfjord in northern Norway to Swedish Härjedalen in the south." -- Title page verso
