Summary The Revival Motif in the Biblical Traditions of Elijah and Elisha. A Com parative Historical-Critical Study of 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 Since antiquity people have respectfully and seriously referred to the myste ry of death and the dead. This has been confirmed by numerous preserved witnes ses speaking about the possibility of life after death. Although it was commonly believed that death was an irreversible process, certain literary testimonies and artefacts that some people (or gods) were able to overcome death and return to life have been preserved in particular cultural circles. This kind of tradition was preserved in ancient civilizations, for example Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan, and also in the biblical narratives of the Old and New Testament. The New Testament narratives related to the revival motif are well known and commented on in various academic publications; they were also spread in ordinary people’s awareness. On the other hand, the Old Testament narratives concerning this motif have not frequently been analysed and published in scholar ly papers. Among the ОТ accounts of people raised from the dead, our attention has been drawn to three texts, two of them being similar and speaking about the resurrection of the dead performed by two key representatives of the early prophe tic period, Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37). The third text (2 Kings 13:21) differs from the other pericopes to a considerable extent. What is of interest is that the three narratives have no equivalents in any Old Testament texts. Moreover,
despite their uniqueness, no mentions of them can be found in other biblical books. All things considered, the author of the dissertation has pursued two essential research objectives. The first one was an attempt to determine all literary, religio us-cultural and theological correlations between the non-biblical texts concerning the revival idea and the two narratives from the Books of the Kings (1 Kings 17:824 and 2 Kings 4:8-37). The second objective was to reconstruct all substantive and formal dependences occurring in the existing versions of the narratives about
310 Summary Elijah and Elisha, which was an attempt to answer the question whether the author of the tradition of 1 Kings 17:8-24 based his text on 2 Kings 4:8-37 as regards its subject matter and literary structure, or conversely. There exists a third option that the redactors of both narratives used a common source (a pattern) that was built on some scheme of a revival narrative. The issue of revival has not been analysed in specialist literature in Polish yet, and consequently, there have been no mono graphs dedicated to this question. Even if the accounts of the revival of the widow of Saraphath’s son or the Shummenite’s son appeared in some publications, they were usually treated marginally as a background of analyses of other literary, exegetical or theological issues related to this part of the Hebrew Bible. Interest in the acts of resurrection performed by the two prophets has been considerably bigger in specialist literature in English. More or less detailed exegetical-theological ana lyses of the pericopes have been conducted among others by Gilmour, Bronner, Roncace, Jobling, Yairah, Bar, Ottoson, Yannai, Levine, Hepner, Zucker, Steen kamp and Lašine. Nevertheless, even these exegetes did not make any systematic juxtapositions between 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 and did not set them against the background of the Middle East beliefs. Hence research undertaken in this work will hopefully turn out to be important and usefUl. The research goals adopted in the introduction have been attained by im plementing the historical-critical method, which is regarded
as one of the most complete tools for a literary, exegetical and theological analysis of the ОТ narra tive books. Although other new ways of systematic and scholarly interpretation of the biblical text, for example the narrative or rhetorical method, have been worked out, the historical-critical approach still remains proved and reliable as regards the ОТ traditions. What is more important is that the research scheme of the historical-critical method fits in the specificity and assumptions of my work warranting the effectiveness of the subsequently conducted literary and exegeti cal-theological analyses. The comparative method has been a tool supporting my investigations. It has been used because of the substantive and formal specificity of my scholarly endeavour. In order to appropriately analyse the problem posed in my work, it seemed essential to differentiate between two key concepts: revival and resurrection. Sin ce both terms can be used to describe the phenomenon of bringing the dead back to life. The fundamental difference between them is based on the reason for as well as the quality and durability of life to which the dead is restored. Resurrection implicates a situation when a dead person is brought to life which qualitatively is not the same as his existence before death, and furthermore, the character of his new life is permanent and irreversible, i.e. is not subject to a subsequent biological
Summary 311 death. On the other hand, a revived person returns to the same type of existence he had before his death. The revived body does not receive any new attributes or possibilities, and its victory over death is not permanent since the revived person must die again in accordance with the laws of nature. The dissertation has been divided into four thematically complementary chapters. The first chapter provides a brief analysis and synthesis of the revival concept in the non-biblical literature and selected traditions of the Hebrew Bible. At this stage, the main threads related to revival in the beliefs and images of the peoples of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan are presented. The second part of the first chapter focuses on presenting the Old Testament accounts of people raised from the dead. The second chapter is dedicated to a detailed analysis of the revi val narrative of the widow of Zarephath’s son (1 Kings 17:8-24). The investiga tions focus on three main areas shown by the historical-critical method: literary analysis, exegetical questions and theological profile. The third chapter analyses the revival of the Shunammite’s son (2 Kings 4:8-37). The research method and course of the analyses applied in this chapter have followed the pattern worked out in the second chapter. The fourth chapter is divided into two main parts. The first one attempts to compare the key thematic motifs of the non-biblical revival traditions with ana logous texts about Elijah and Elisha. The aim of this juxtaposition was to seek answers to the first research problem, the direction and
scope of potential litera ry, cultural-religious and theological dependences occurring between these frag ments. The second part of chapter four includes a multi-layered comparison of the structural framework and theological message of the ОТ narratives: 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37. The analyses conducted in the work have turned out to be serious challenges at some points. Most difficulties have occurred during the examination of the re vival motif in the funerary rite and sepulchral iconography of ancient Egypt. Here the challenge was to provide an appropriate analysis of the source texts and their translations as well as a proper understanding of the fairly elaborated eschatolo gical images, burial practices and fimerary celebrations. Another major problem was the diachronic analysis of both pericopes from the Books of the Kings aiming at reconstructing their process of redaction. The investigations proved to be time-consuming, especially in the case of the tradition of 2 Kings 4:8-37 due to the complicated process of its edition. In light of all of the juxtapositions and analyses, I could attempt to answer the questions posed in the introduction. The relation between the relicts of writing and non-biblical cultural artefacts on the one hand and on the other, the texts of
312 Summary the Hebrew Bible (1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37) that underwent a detailed analysis and were interpreted in their broad social-cultural and religious context, should be recognised as very small and indirect. What struck me most was the fundamental conceptual difference concerning the most important aspects of this issue, for example the person and time of the act of revival. Strong similarities as well as big differences could be perceived between 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37. Both narratives are almost the same length, their literary genre and structure are similar and so are the circle of their origin and the course of their redaction. Because of the complicated process concerning the edition of the cycle of the traditions related to Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 17:1and 2 Kings 9:10) and the even more complicated process of the Deuteronomic redaction of the Books of the Kings, the traditions of 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 also show several considerable differences. At this point, I should mention the different terminological pattern concerning the problems of life and death, a slightly different concept of the figure and status of the prophet and his activities, the original ways of presenting the protagonists and the development of narrative, and first of all the different concept of the revival rite (the proportion of the parti cipation of God and the prophet) as well as its circumstances and consequences. These conclusions allow me to state that at the foundation of the pericopes: 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37, there might have existed
a common revival scheme which was, however, profoundly elaborated and adjusted to the literary and theological structure of the particular cycles of the traditions related to Elijah and Elisha. Considering the results of the research it can be stated that the later and more theologically elaborated narrative is 1 Kings 17:8-24, while the text of 2 Kings 4:8-37 has preserved its original character of a prophetic legend and a more pri mitive theological perspective of the depicted people and events, which can be distinctly seen, for instance, in the revival scene. Yet, the presentations cannot allow me to claim with all certainty that there was some correlation between the redactions of both narratives. Although the spectrum of the analyses and research was very broad, there are still certain areas that are worth deepening. A concrete perspective for furt her investigations regarding 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 would be an attempt to juxtapose them with the Greek and Roman writings and culture in the framework of revival questions. Another important area would be the question of a theological rereading of the Old Testament idea of revival in the intertestamental literature, and in a further research perspective - in the New Testament traditions. Yet another potential area could be a multi-layered juxtaposition of the
Summary 313 ОТ concept of revival realised by two representatives of the early prophetism with analogous cases that allegedly occurred in the context of activities undertaken by various circles and charismatic leaders as well as the condition of contemporary medical knowledge in this respect. As it was noted while conducting the analyses, the protagonists of the narratives and the redactors of the traditions of 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 were convinced about the death of both boys and the effectiveness of the reviving activities performed by Elijah and Elisha. Since many contemporary exegetes and interpreters have undermined this fact suggest ing a phenomenon which modem medicine calls “clinical death” ֊ cessation of all vital fimetions without any symptoms of biological death ֊ this type of interdisci plinary work will certainly yield interesting results and provide answers to these fascinating questions. Summary The Revival Motif in the Biblical Traditions of Elijah and Elisha. A Com parative Historical-Critical Study of 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 Since antiquity people have respectfully and seriously referred to the myste ry of death and the dead. This has been confirmed by numerous preserved witnes ses speaking about the possibility of life after death. Although it was commonly believed that death was an irreversible process, certain literary testimonies and artefacts that some people (or gods) were able to overcome death and return to life have been preserved in particular cultural circles. This kind of tradition was preserved in ancient civilizations, for example Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan, and also in the biblical narratives of the Old and New Testament. The New Testament narratives related to the revival motif are well known and commented on in various academic publications; they were also spread in ordinary people’s awareness. On the other hand, the Old Testament narratives concerning this motif have not frequently been analysed and published in scholar ly papers. Among the ОТ accounts of people raised from the dead, our attention has been drawn to three texts, two of them being similar and speaking about the resurrection of the dead performed by two key representatives of the early prophe tic period, Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37). The third text (2 Kings 13:21) differs from the other pericopes to a considerable extent. What is of interest is that the three narratives have no equivalents in any Old Testament texts. Moreover,
despite their uniqueness, no mentions of them can be found in other biblical books. All things considered, the author of the dissertation has pursued two essential research objectives. The first one was an attempt to determine all literary, religio us-cultural and theological correlations between the non-biblical texts concerning the revival idea and the two narratives from the Books of the Kings (1 Kings 17:824 and 2 Kings 4:8-37). The second objective was to reconstruct all substantive and formal dependences occurring in the existing versions of the narratives about
310 Summary Elijah and Elisha, which was an attempt to answer the question whether the author of the tradition of 1 Kings 17:8-24 based his text on 2 Kings 4:8-37 as regards its subject matter and literary structure, or conversely. There exists a third option that the redactors of both narratives used a common source (a pattern) that was built on some scheme of a revival narrative. The issue of revival has not been analysed in specialist literature in Polish yet, and consequently, there have been no mono graphs dedicated to this question. Even if the accounts of the revival of the widow of Saraphath’s son or the Shummenite’s son appeared in some publications, they were usually treated marginally as a background of analyses of other literary, exegetical or theological issues related to this part of the Hebrew Bible. Interest in the acts of resurrection performed by the two prophets has been considerably bigger in specialist literature in English. More or less detailed exegetical-theological ana lyses of the pericopes have been conducted among others by Gilmour, Bronner, Roncace, Jobling, Yairah, Bar, Ottoson, Yannai, Levine, Hepner, Zucker, Steen kamp and Lašine. Nevertheless, even these exegetes did not make any systematic juxtapositions between 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 and did not set them against the background of the Middle East beliefs. Hence research undertaken in this work will hopefully turn out to be important and usefUl. The research goals adopted in the introduction have been attained by im plementing the historical-critical method, which is regarded
as one of the most complete tools for a literary, exegetical and theological analysis of the ОТ narra tive books. Although other new ways of systematic and scholarly interpretation of the biblical text, for example the narrative or rhetorical method, have been worked out, the historical-critical approach still remains proved and reliable as regards the ОТ traditions. What is more important is that the research scheme of the historical-critical method fits in the specificity and assumptions of my work warranting the effectiveness of the subsequently conducted literary and exegeti cal-theological analyses. The comparative method has been a tool supporting my investigations. It has been used because of the substantive and formal specificity of my scholarly endeavour. In order to appropriately analyse the problem posed in my work, it seemed essential to differentiate between two key concepts: revival and resurrection. Sin ce both terms can be used to describe the phenomenon of bringing the dead back to life. The fundamental difference between them is based on the reason for as well as the quality and durability of life to which the dead is restored. Resurrection implicates a situation when a dead person is brought to life which qualitatively is not the same as his existence before death, and furthermore, the character of his new life is permanent and irreversible, i.e. is not subject to a subsequent biological
Summary 311 death. On the other hand, a revived person returns to the same type of existence he had before his death. The revived body does not receive any new attributes or possibilities, and its victory over death is not permanent since the revived person must die again in accordance with the laws of nature. The dissertation has been divided into four thematically complementary chapters. The first chapter provides a brief analysis and synthesis of the revival concept in the non-biblical literature and selected traditions of the Hebrew Bible. At this stage, the main threads related to revival in the beliefs and images of the peoples of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan are presented. The second part of the first chapter focuses on presenting the Old Testament accounts of people raised from the dead. The second chapter is dedicated to a detailed analysis of the revi val narrative of the widow of Zarephath’s son (1 Kings 17:8-24). The investiga tions focus on three main areas shown by the historical-critical method: literary analysis, exegetical questions and theological profile. The third chapter analyses the revival of the Shunammite’s son (2 Kings 4:8-37). The research method and course of the analyses applied in this chapter have followed the pattern worked out in the second chapter. The fourth chapter is divided into two main parts. The first one attempts to compare the key thematic motifs of the non-biblical revival traditions with ana logous texts about Elijah and Elisha. The aim of this juxtaposition was to seek answers to the first research problem, the direction and
scope of potential litera ry, cultural-religious and theological dependences occurring between these frag ments. The second part of chapter four includes a multi-layered comparison of the structural framework and theological message of the ОТ narratives: 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37. The analyses conducted in the work have turned out to be serious challenges at some points. Most difficulties have occurred during the examination of the re vival motif in the funerary rite and sepulchral iconography of ancient Egypt. Here the challenge was to provide an appropriate analysis of the source texts and their translations as well as a proper understanding of the fairly elaborated eschatolo gical images, burial practices and fimerary celebrations. Another major problem was the diachronic analysis of both pericopes from the Books of the Kings aiming at reconstructing their process of redaction. The investigations proved to be time-consuming, especially in the case of the tradition of 2 Kings 4:8-37 due to the complicated process of its edition. In light of all of the juxtapositions and analyses, I could attempt to answer the questions posed in the introduction. The relation between the relicts of writing and non-biblical cultural artefacts on the one hand and on the other, the texts of
312 Summary the Hebrew Bible (1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37) that underwent a detailed analysis and were interpreted in their broad social-cultural and religious context, should be recognised as very small and indirect. What struck me most was the fundamental conceptual difference concerning the most important aspects of this issue, for example the person and time of the act of revival. Strong similarities as well as big differences could be perceived between 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37. Both narratives are almost the same length, their literary genre and structure are similar and so are the circle of their origin and the course of their redaction. Because of the complicated process concerning the edition of the cycle of the traditions related to Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 17:1and 2 Kings 9:10) and the even more complicated process of the Deuteronomic redaction of the Books of the Kings, the traditions of 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 also show several considerable differences. At this point, I should mention the different terminological pattern concerning the problems of life and death, a slightly different concept of the figure and status of the prophet and his activities, the original ways of presenting the protagonists and the development of narrative, and first of all the different concept of the revival rite (the proportion of the parti cipation of God and the prophet) as well as its circumstances and consequences. These conclusions allow me to state that at the foundation of the pericopes: 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37, there might have existed
a common revival scheme which was, however, profoundly elaborated and adjusted to the literary and theological structure of the particular cycles of the traditions related to Elijah and Elisha. Considering the results of the research it can be stated that the later and more theologically elaborated narrative is 1 Kings 17:8-24, while the text of 2 Kings 4:8-37 has preserved its original character of a prophetic legend and a more pri mitive theological perspective of the depicted people and events, which can be distinctly seen, for instance, in the revival scene. Yet, the presentations cannot allow me to claim with all certainty that there was some correlation between the redactions of both narratives. Although the spectrum of the analyses and research was very broad, there are still certain areas that are worth deepening. A concrete perspective for furt her investigations regarding 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 would be an attempt to juxtapose them with the Greek and Roman writings and culture in the framework of revival questions. Another important area would be the question of a theological rereading of the Old Testament idea of revival in the intertestamental literature, and in a further research perspective - in the New Testament traditions. Yet another potential area could be a multi-layered juxtaposition of the
Summary 313 ОТ concept of revival realised by two representatives of the early prophetism with analogous cases that allegedly occurred in the context of activities undertaken by various circles and charismatic leaders as well as the condition of contemporary medical knowledge in this respect. As it was noted while conducting the analyses, the protagonists of the narratives and the redactors of the traditions of 1 Kings 17:8-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-37 were convinced about the death of both boys and the effectiveness of the reviving activities performed by Elijah and Elisha. Since many contemporary exegetes and interpreters have undermined this fact suggest ing a phenomenon which modem medicine calls “clinical death” ֊ cessation of all vital fimetions without any symptoms of biological death ֊ this type of interdisci plinary work will certainly yield interesting results and provide answers to these fascinating questions.
