Zusammenfassung: | Since the publication of Eliza May Butler's Tyranny of Greece over Germany in 1935, the obsession of the German educated elite with the ancient Greeks has become an accepted, if severely underanalyzed, cliché. In Down from Olympus, Suzanne Marchand attempts to come to grips with German Graecophilia, not as a private passion but as an institutionally generated and preserved cultural trope. The book argues that nineteenth-century philhellenes inherited both an elitist, normative aesthetics and an ascetic, scholarly ethos from their Romantic predecessors; German "neohumanists" promised to reconcile these intellectual commitments, and by so doing, to revitalize education and the arts. Focusing on the history of classical archaeology, Marchand shows how the injunction to imitate Greek art was made the basis for new, state-funded cultural institutions. Tracing interactions between scholars and policymakers that made possible grand-scale cultural feats like the acquisition of the Pergamum Altar, she underscores both the gains in specialized knowledge and the failures in social responsibility that were the distinctive products of German neohumanism. This book discusses intellectual and institutional aspects of archaeology and philhellenism, giving extensive treatment to the history of prehistorical archaeology and German "orientalism." Marchand traces the history of the study, excavation, and exhibition of Greek art as a means to confront the social, cultural, and political consequences of the specialization of scholarship in the last two centuries |

Marchand traces the history of the study, excavation, and exhibition of Greek art as a means to confront the social, cultural, and political consequences of the specialization of scholarship in the last two centuries</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="534" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="c">2003</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Vorderasiatisches Museum</subfield><subfield code="g">Berlin</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)5035694-X</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Staatliche Antikensammlungen und Glyptothek</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)1055016-1</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4028138-3</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Deutsches Archäologisches Institut</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)18740-9</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Neues Museum</subfield><subfield code="g">Berlin</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)10006374-3</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1830-1980</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1750-1970</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geistesgeschichte 1750-1970</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Althoff, Friedrich;Aristotle;Bersu, Gerhard;Bildung</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Brunn, Heinrich</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Catholicism</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Delbriick, Richard</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Djemal Pasha</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Dorpfeld, Wilhelm</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Egyptology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Freytag, Hermann</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">George, Stefan</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Gerhard, Eduard</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Gymnasium</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Hamdi Edhem</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Herder, J. Marchand [Princeton, New Jersey] Princeton University Press 30. Juni 2020 1 Online-Ressource (XXIV, 400 Seiten) Illustrationen txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Since the publication of Eliza May Butler's Tyranny of Greece over Germany in 1935, the obsession of the German educated elite with the ancient Greeks has become an accepted, if severely underanalyzed, cliché. This book discusses intellectual and institutional aspects of archaeology and philhellenism, giving extensive treatment to the history of prehistorical archaeology and German "orientalism." Marchand traces the history of the study, excavation, and exhibition of Greek art as a means to confront the social, cultural, and political consequences of the specialization of scholarship in the last two centuries 2003 Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin (DE-588)5035694-X gnd rswk-swf Staatliche Antikensammlungen und Glyptothek (DE-588)1055016-1 gnd rswk-swf Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (DE-588)4028138-3 gnd rswk-swf Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DE-588)18740-9 gnd rswk-swf Neues Museum Berlin (DE-588)10006374-3 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1830-1980 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1750-1970 gnd rswk-swf Geistesgeschichte 1750-1970 gnd rswk-swf Althoff, Friedrich;Aristotle;Bersu, Gerhard;Bildung Brunn, Heinrich Catholicism Delbriick, Richard Djemal Pasha Dorpfeld, Wilhelm Egyptology Freytag, Hermann George, Stefan Gerhard, Eduard Gymnasium Hamdi Edhem Herder, J.
