SUMMARY The outstanding Latvian American architect Gunnar Birkerts (1925) is known in the world of architecture by such projects as the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Minnesota (1968, completed 1973), the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, Texas (1970, 1972), the Corning Glass Museum, Corning, New York (1976, 1980), and others. Gunnar Birkerts is a Professor at the University of Michigan, Honorary Professor of the University of Oklahoma, Honorary Professor of Riga Technical University, Foreign Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. He is the recipient of many U.S.A. and international awards and prizes, including the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal «for contributions to the 20th century world architecture», American Art and Science Academy’s Arnold V. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture: «One of the most talented architects in this country today. His works display a rare combination of craftsmanship and poetic spirit», and American by Choice award «in recognition of “Outstanding Contribution to America” pride in his ethnic heritage and concern for all people». In 1982, Gunnar Birkerts was recognized as the sixth best U.S.A. architect. Gunnar Birkerts was born January 17, 1925 in Riga, Latvia, son of the folklorist and literary scholar Pēteris Birkerts (18811956) and of the educator, linguist and folklorist Mērija SauleSleine (1895-1982). Since this is the first book on Gunnar Birkerts in Latvian, its author, poet and essayist Māris Čaklais (1940), attempts to 253
discover the genesis of this distinguished personality. His sources include the Birkerts’ family tree and Pēteris Birkerts’ two volumes «Psychology of Creative Work». It is amazing to discover how similar are father’s and son’s models for creative processes even if they refer to different creative areas and are realized in different times and circumstances. For example: Father (1922) states that after the conception, there is «a period of incubation during which an idea matures, develops in the world of the artist»; Son (1983): “There are three steps to the creative process: Research, incubation, and the creative moment.” It is possible that such similarity in the comprehension of the creative process by both father and son bears some witness to genetic inheritance, but most of all it makes one think of the objective character of subjective categories. In the book, there are many personal details, especially in regard to Gunnar Birkerts’ striving to discover his mother’s role in his upbringing, in the development of his attitude toward work and ethical postulates. During World War II, Gunnar Birkerts arrives in Germany and right after the war, begins studies at the Stuttgart Technical University. In the German educational system, there are two competing movements - the Heimatstil or regional architectural school and the Bauhaus school. Gunnar Birkerts desires more, he masters the Scandinavian architecture and acquaints himself with the American architecture. Stuttgart provides the basis for comprehension of different architectural styles, building materials, and engineering
capabilities. After graduation from the Stuttgart Technical University, Gunnar Birkerts moves to the United States. For a short while, he works in the architecture firm of Larry Perkins and Phil Will, but the following year finds him in Eero Saarinen’s firm, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. A short period of time is spent in Donald Grieb’s office in Milwaukee, but soon Gunnar Birkerts becomes the elder, then the chief architect in Minoru Jamasakis’ firm in Birmingham, Michigan. 254
The book devotes a chapter to each of Gunnar Birkerts’ colleagues, Saarinen and Jamasaki. These chapters disclose the professional tendencies, difficulties, contradictions of both architects and also Gunnar Birkerts’ relationship with his employers. Then comes time to establish his own firm. As a northerner, the book’s author has been especially surprised by Gunnar Birkerts’ skill and ability in bringing light to underground structures with such amazing and diverse means and methods, as in the rooms of the University of Michigan Law Library three stories under ground. The Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis has delighted the author with its original conception, metaphoric force in complete accord with the building’s functionality. Gunnar Birkerts’ church designs is a genre by itself. Modern buildings, their symbolism, metaphor, expression - everything acts upon the soul. Gunnar Birkerts has participated in the planning and projecting of the Domino Pizza headquarters in Michigan. The book describes Gunnar Birkerts’ Italian epopee - not many realized projects there, but creative atmosphere through out his Italy period. In Italy the Birkerts have acquired property - Civita di Bagnoregio - which they visit whenever Gunnar’s intensive work regime permits. Not all of Gunnar Birkerts’ goals and conceptions are realized. But that, of course, is not always up to him. The Latvian architect Oļģerts Ostenbergs (1925) says: «Le Corbusier said that gods and geometry sit on the same throne. Mies declared that God is in the details. Birkerts could say that God sits on the roof.» That is
the intuitive aspect of this process. In the book, there are a number of Gunnar Birkerts’ creative process revelations which he isn’t willing to call a theory, e.g.: «You can’t wake up in the morning and say: «Today I must 255
search for a symbol or a metaphor.» They come by themselves if you are ready for them.» Several chapters deal with Gunnar Birkerts’ contemplations about work and solitude, about doubts and egoism, about fatalism and death. Family as the human being’s basis for stability, wife Silvija’s essential role in his destiny - all of that is revealed in simple but ample details. And finally ֊ the Latvian National Library - a project ordered from Gunnar Birkerts in 1990 and designed soon after, still is not realized. The book’s author hypothesizes that the reason is not so much lack of finances as floundering of the national institutions and intrigues of the political forces. Gunnar Birkerts is convinced: «The library will be. And it is nearer with every day.» In the book there are bibliographical data, projects and their realizations, honours, prizes, and comprehensive indexes. 256

Gunnar Birkerts is a Professor at the University of Michigan, Honorary Professor of the University of Oklahoma, Honorary Professor of Riga Technical University, Foreign Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. He is the recipient of many U.S.A. and international awards and prizes, including the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal «for contributions to the 20th century world architecture», American Art and Science Academy’s Arnold V. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture: «One of the most talented architects in this country today. His works display a rare combination of craftsmanship and poetic spirit», and American by Choice award «in recognition of “Outstanding Contribution to America” pride in his ethnic heritage and concern for all people». In 1982, Gunnar Birkerts was recognized as the sixth best U.S.A. architect. Gunnar Birkerts was born January 17, 1925 in Riga, Latvia, son of the folklorist and literary scholar Pēteris Birkerts (18811956) and of the educator, linguist and folklorist Mērija SauleSleine (1895-1982). Since this is the first book on Gunnar Birkerts in Latvian, its author, poet and essayist Māris Čaklais (1940), attempts to 253
discover the genesis of this distinguished personality. His sources include the Birkerts’ family tree and Pēteris Birkerts’ two volumes «Psychology of Creative Work». It is amazing to discover how similar are father’s and son’s models for creative processes even if they refer to different creative areas and are realized in different times and circumstances. For example: Father (1922) states that after the conception, there is «a period of incubation during which an idea matures, develops in the world of the artist»; Son (1983): “There are three steps to the creative process: Research, incubation, and the creative moment.” It is possible that such similarity in the comprehension of the creative process by both father and son bears some witness to genetic inheritance, but most of all it makes one think of the objective character of subjective categories. In the book, there are many personal details, especially in regard to Gunnar Birkerts’ striving to discover his mother’s role in his upbringing, in the development of his attitude toward work and ethical postulates. During World War II, Gunnar Birkerts arrives in Germany and right after the war, begins studies at the Stuttgart Technical University. In the German educational system, there are two competing movements - the Heimatstil or regional architectural school and the Bauhaus school. Gunnar Birkerts desires more, he masters the Scandinavian architecture and acquaints himself with the American architecture. Stuttgart provides the basis for comprehension of different architectural styles, building materials, and engineering
capabilities. After graduation from the Stuttgart Technical University, Gunnar Birkerts moves to the United States. For a short while, he works in the architecture firm of Larry Perkins and Phil Will, but the following year finds him in Eero Saarinen’s firm, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. A short period of time is spent in Donald Grieb’s office in Milwaukee, but soon Gunnar Birkerts becomes the elder, then the chief architect in Minoru Jamasakis’ firm in Birmingham, Michigan. 254
The book devotes a chapter to each of Gunnar Birkerts’ colleagues, Saarinen and Jamasaki. These chapters disclose the professional tendencies, difficulties, contradictions of both architects and also Gunnar Birkerts’ relationship with his employers. Then comes time to establish his own firm. As a northerner, the book’s author has been especially surprised by Gunnar Birkerts’ skill and ability in bringing light to underground structures with such amazing and diverse means and methods, as in the rooms of the University of Michigan Law Library three stories under ground. The Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis has delighted the author with its original conception, metaphoric force in complete accord with the building’s functionality. Gunnar Birkerts’ church designs is a genre by itself. Modern buildings, their symbolism, metaphor, expression - everything acts upon the soul. Gunnar Birkerts has participated in the planning and projecting of the Domino Pizza headquarters in Michigan. The book describes Gunnar Birkerts’ Italian epopee - not many realized projects there, but creative atmosphere through out his Italy period. In Italy the Birkerts have acquired property - Civita di Bagnoregio - which they visit whenever Gunnar’s intensive work regime permits. Not all of Gunnar Birkerts’ goals and conceptions are realized. But that, of course, is not always up to him. The Latvian architect Oļģerts Ostenbergs (1925) says: «Le Corbusier said that gods and geometry sit on the same throne. Mies declared that God is in the details. Birkerts could say that God sits on the roof.» That is
the intuitive aspect of this process. In the book, there are a number of Gunnar Birkerts’ creative process revelations which he isn’t willing to call a theory, e.g.: «You can’t wake up in the morning and say: «Today I must 255
search for a symbol or a metaphor.» They come by themselves if you are ready for them.» Several chapters deal with Gunnar Birkerts’ contemplations about work and solitude, about doubts and egoism, about fatalism and death. Family as the human being’s basis for stability, wife Silvija’s essential role in his destiny - all of that is revealed in simple but ample details. And finally ֊ the Latvian National Library - a project ordered from Gunnar Birkerts in 1990 and designed soon after, still is not realized. The book’s author hypothesizes that the reason is not so much lack of finances as floundering of the national institutions and intrigues of the political forces. Gunnar Birkerts is convinced: «The library will be. And it is nearer with every day.» In the book there are bibliographical data, projects and their realizations, honours, prizes, and comprehensive indexes. 256
