Rose Wilder Lane, best known as the editor of the “Little House” series of books by her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder, was a serious and successful journalist, travel writer, novelist, and political theorist in her own right, yet her prodigious body of work, the product of a career spanning fifty years, has received scant scholarly attention. In The Rediscovered Writings ofRose Wilder Lane, Amy Mattson Lauters finally gives Lane’s journalistic work the scholarly recognition it has long deserved. In this thoughtfully assembled collection of Lane’s journalism—from early work for Sunset magazine in 1918 to her final piece for Womans Day set in 1965 Saigon—Lauters shows us how Lane infiised her writing with her particular ideology of Americanism, one defined by fierce individualism, self-reliance, and freedom from government interference. Along the way, Lane shares her experiences as an extra in a Douglas Fairbanks movie, re peals on healthcare conditions American women faced in the early part of the twentieth century, and hikes over the Albanian mountains between the world wars. The development of her conservative political views over the course of her career provides a lens through which readers can view cultural debates spanning the early- and mid-twentieth century. -
