SUMMARY If we want to understand today, we need to understand what happenedyesterday Efforts of Civic Association Beautiful Spiš („Krásny Spiš“) happened to be an occasion to develop an interest in the topic of exoduses in the Spiš region. Only later was it revealed that small discoveries and knowledge of the 20th century, with different variations, apply not only to the Spiš region, but to the whole Eastern Slovakia, Slovakia and Central Europe as well. We have gradually detected the truth about involuntary deportations, exiles, and in the crudest cases about forced deportations, imprisonment and murder in the Spiš region. All of these exiles, numerous departures, removals, liquidations, deportations, murders, manslaughters, etc. we named exodus. We realized that causes of these exoduses were of a different nature: social, political, religious, ethnical, economic and national. We focused on the following exoduses: immigration for workrelated reasons to USA, exodus of Hungarians, expulsion of Czechs, forced labor in Hitler’s Reich, deportation of Jews, deportation to the gulags, expulsion of Carpathian Germans from Slovakia to Germany, liquidation of bourgeoisie, persecution of Ruthenians, liquidation of Greek Catholic Church, liquidation of private farmers, liquidation of priests of all confessions, liquidation of monasteries and their defenders, emigration after 1968, Roma exoduses, as well as of young Slovaks looking for work abroad. All the above mentioned exoduses had far-reaching consequences for people staying home. Exoduses completely changed the social climate of
the Spiš region. Socially, ethnically, religiously and culturally heterogeneous Spiš was at the beginning of the 21st century much more monotonous and poorer in its diversity, of which it was proud in the past, and from which it could benefit. This cultural diversity enriched 333
the region and strengthened generosity of behavior of its inhabitants. It is obvious that inhabitants of the Spiš region are not only victims of the exoduses, but also their accomplices, organizers and instigators. Some of them gained power, career, or profited materially. Exoduses are the stories of people who failed or passed, denounced or remained silent, enriched themselves or helped others, moved away or stayed, survived or died. Exoduses are about shame, greed, malice, hatefulness, deceit, cowardice, fear, weakness, careerism and revenge, but also about courage, love, help, humanity, heroism, truth, strength, modesty and forgiveness. Exoduses committed much evil and little good. Spiš still suffers the consequences of exoduses today. Exoduses of the Spiš region in the 21st century repeatedly prove that no generation is perfect, unmistakable and immune towards temptation to collective and ultimate solutions to its problems at the expense of minorities. Each generation faces simple and, at the same time, difficult task: to resist these temptations. Our publication intends, at least partially, to satisfy demands of everyone who wants to understand the Spiš of today. Therefore, although this publication is written professionally, it is also accessible and via examples of these exoduses describes events of the 20th century in the Spiš region. 334 |
