"Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions argues for the increased importance of new forms of localised reporting in the digital age. At a time when digital technology is impacting on the success and sustainability of traditional models of journalism, hyperlocal journalism seeks to restore journalistic integrity, build community, incite change and engage audiences. The books centres around three case studies which illustrate the potential of hyperlocal journalism to thrive, when the right balance is struck between audience engagement, investment and respect. Each case study looks at a different start-up, the first is a project in New Zealand known as 'Neighbourly', which has invested in engaging local communities and incorporating this engagement in the news production process. The second is The Change Makers' Project in Queensland Australia, designed to counter bias in mainstream media coverage. The final case study looks at the concept of hyperlocal 'plants' by major media companies in Australia. It highlights the tension in legacy newsrooms and the challenges with launching start-ups with limited resources. Although the notion of hyperlocal journalism is not new, the ways in which these regionalised stories are now being told has evolved. This book demonstrates the increased necessity for tailored approaches to creating and providing hyperlocal journalism in order to engage targeted audiences and meet their needs for news, and reclaim authenticity and credibility for journalism"
