Zusammenfassung: | This book argues that the Baroque painter, propagandist, and diplomat, Peter Paul Rubens, was not only aware of rapidly shifting religious and cultural attitudes toward women, but actively engaged in shaping them. Today, Rubens's paintings continue to be used-and abused-to prescribe and proscribe certain forms of femininity. Repositioning some of the artist's best-known works within seventeenth-century Catholic theology and female court culture provides a feminist corrective to a body of art historical scholarship in which studies of gender and religion are often mutually exclusive. Moving chronologically through Rubens's lengthy career, the author shows that, in relation to the powerful women in his life, Rubens figured the female form as a transhistorical carrier of meaning whose devotional and rhetorical efficacy was heightened rather than diminished by notions of female difference and particularity |

Vanessa Lyon Amsterdam Amsterdam University Press [2020] © 2020 1 online resource (248 Seiten) 20 color plates, 70 halftones txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Visual and material culture, 1300-1700 22 Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher's Web site, viewed 26. Aug 2020) This book argues that the Baroque painter, propagandist, and diplomat, Peter Paul Rubens, was not only aware of rapidly shifting religious and cultural attitudes toward women, but actively engaged in shaping them. Moving chronologically through Rubens's lengthy career, the author shows that, in relation to the powerful women in his life, Rubens figured the female form as a transhistorical carrier of meaning whose devotional and rhetorical efficacy was heightened rather than diminished by notions of female difference and particularity In English Rubens, Peter Paul 1577-1640 (DE-588)11860354X gnd rswk-swf Isabella Spanien, Infantin 1566-1633 (DE-588)118555928 gnd rswk-swf Maria Frankreich, Königin 1575-1642 (DE-588)118577778 gnd rswk-swf History ART / General bisacsh Human figure in art Women in art Repräsentation (DE-588)4137492-7 gnd rswk-swf Herrscherbildnis (DE-588)4123373-6 gnd rswk-swf Bildnis (DE-588)4006627-7 gnd rswk-swf Bildnismalerei (DE-588)4145426-1 gnd rswk-swf Frau Motiv (DE-588)4113617-2 gnd rswk-swf Allegorie (DE-588)4001236-0 gnd rswk-swf Rubens, Peter Paul 1577-1640 (DE-588)11860354X p Frau Motiv (DE-588)4113617-2 s DE-604 Bildnismalerei (DE-588)4145426-1 s Allegorie (DE-588)4001236-0 s Maria Frankreich, Königin 1575-1642 (DE-588)118577778 p Isabella Spanien, Infantin 1566-1633 (DE-588)118555928 p Herrscherbildnis (DE-588)4123373-6 s Repräsentation (DE-588)4137492-7 s Bildnis (DE-588)4006627-7 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-94-629-8551-3 Visual and material culture, 1300-1700 22 (DE-604)BV045682503 22 https://doi.org/10.1515/9789048536665 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext https://doi.org/10.1017/9789048536665 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
