SUMMARY The edition is prepared for the exhibition NotForever. 1968-1985, dedicated to the Soviet epoch of the 1970-19805. The catalogue, as well as the large-scale research exhibition, is the second part of the trilogy dedicated to the Soviet art of the postwar period. In 2017 the State Tretyakov Gallery launched the Thaw pro ject, and it marked the beginning of the exhibition triptych. The period which followed the Thaw epoch in 1968 and ended in 1985 was retrospectively called the ‘era of stagnation’ and is the focus of the current exhibition and the catalogue. In contrast to the Thaw (State Tretyakov Gallery, 2017) project, where primary attention was given to the stylistic trends and general ideas of the epoch, the exhibition involves psycholog ical analysis of both individual and collective conscience con ducted on the material of works of art; moreover, for the first time ever the art of the era of stagnation is regarded in the con text of global postmodernism problematics. Both the exhibition and the album are composed of eight sec tions in which the phenomena of the officially approved art seem to be presented in such a way as if they are reflected in the dis torting mirror where they correlate to the phenomena of under ground and alternative culture such as Ritual and Power, Sots Art, Religious Mysticism, Countryside, Childhood, Communities, History and Suspended Time, Disappearance. The topic of each section is revealed in a wide range of different interpretations and ways to cheat the clock, i.e. to transcend the time frame. The name of the edition
prepared for the exhibition refers to the book of Russo-American anthropologist Alexei Yurchak ‘Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation’ (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2006; Mos cow: New Literary Observer, 2014). It is dedicated to the period of the so-called Tate socialism’ and offers a new point of view on the development of the Soviet system and its end — predict able and unexpected at the same time. Research articles published in the edition are dedicated to paint ing, graphics, design and cinematography of the era of stag nation as well as to social events and political aspects of life in the Soviet Union. The catalogue includes over 400 works
of art, which are exposed at the exhibition. The annotations describe various aspects of art practices and give a chance to have a new look on the history of the Soviet art. The edition is supplemented with the detailed chronicle of the events which took place in the period between 1968 and 1985. The book is addressed both to specialists and wide audience of readers, who are interested in art culture and history of the second half of the 20th century.
