Zusammenfassung: | This volume interrogates settled ways of thinking about the seemingly interminable conflict between religious and secular values in our world today. What are the assumptions and resources internal to secular conceptions of critique that help or hinder our understanding of one of the most pressing conflicts of our times?Taking as their point of departure the question of whether critique belongs exclusively to forms of liberal democracy that define themselves in opposition to religion, these authors consider the case of the "Danish cartoon controversy" of 2005. They offer accounts of reading, understanding, and critique for offering a way to rethink conventional oppositions between free speech and religious belief, judgment and violence, reason and prejudice, rationality and embodied life. The book, first published in 2009, has been updated for the present edition with a new Preface by the authors |

Press 2013 1 Online-Ressource (XX, 148 S.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Essays first presented at a symposium, "Is Critique Secular?," held in fall 2007 and sponsored by the Townsend Center for the Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley. - Originally published: Berkeley, Calif. : Townsend Center for the Humanities, University of California, 2009. (The Townsend papers in the humanities ; no. 2) This volume interrogates settled ways of thinking about the seemingly interminable conflict between religious and secular values in our world today. The book, first published in 2009, has been updated for the present edition with a new Preface by the authors RELIGION / Philosophy bisacsh Blasphemy (Islam) Blasphemy Freedom of speech Religious aspects Islam Freedom of speech Islam and secularism Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 gnd rswk-swf Säkularismus (DE-588)4463409-2 gnd rswk-swf Religionskritik (DE-588)4049408-1 gnd rswk-swf Gotteslästerung (DE-588)4157953-7 gnd rswk-swf Redefreiheit (DE-588)4177296-9 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 2007 Kalifornien gnd-content Religionskritik (DE-588)4049408-1 s Redefreiheit (DE-588)4177296-9 s Gotteslästerung (DE-588)4157953-7 s Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 s Säkularismus (DE-588)4463409-2 s DE-604 Asad, Talal 1933- (DE-588)132048280 ctb Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-8232-5168-1 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-8232-5169-8 https://doi.org/10.1515/9780823252381 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
