Zusammenfassung: | How challenger parties, acting as political entrepreneurs, are changing European democraciesChallenger parties are on the rise in Europe, exemplified by the likes of Podemos in Spain, the National Rally in France, the Alternative for Germany, or the Brexit Party in Great Britain. Like disruptive entrepreneurs, these parties offer new policies and defy the dominance of established party brands. In the face of these challenges and a more volatile electorate, mainstream parties are losing their grip on power. In this book, Catherine De Vries and Sara Hobolt explore why some challenger parties are so successful and what mainstream parties can do to confront these political entrepreneurs.Drawing analogies with how firms compete, De Vries and Hobolt demonstrate that political change is as much about the ability of challenger parties to innovate as it is about the inability of dominant parties to respond. Challenger parties employ two types of innovation to break established party dominance: they mobilize new issues, such as immigration, the environment, and Euroscepticism, and they employ antiestablishment rhetoric to undermine mainstream party appeal. Unencumbered by government experience, challenger parties adapt more quickly to shifting voter tastes and harness voter disenchantment. Delving into strategies of dominance versus innovation, the authors explain why European party systems have remained stable for decades, but also why they are now increasingly under strain. As challenger parties continue to seek to disrupt the existing order, Political Entrepreneurs shows that their ascendency fundamentally alters government stability and democratic politics |

Hobolt Princeton ; Oxford Princeton University Press [2020] © 2020 1 Online-Ressource (xv, 314 Seiten) Illustrationen, Diagramme txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier How challenger parties, acting as political entrepreneurs, are changing European democraciesChallenger parties are on the rise in Europe, exemplified by the likes of Podemos in Spain, the National Rally in France, the Alternative for Germany, or the Brexit Party in Great Britain. As challenger parties continue to seek to disrupt the existing order, Political Entrepreneurs shows that their ascendency fundamentally alters government stability and democratic politics Bonnie Meguid Case Mudde Cultural Backlash European Populism in the Shadow of the Great Recession European elections Five Star Movement Hanspeter Kriesi Herbert Kitschelt Jae-Jae Spoon Lega Nord Party Competition between Unequals Peter Mair Pippa Norris Political Survival of Small Parties in Europe Populist Radical Right Parties in Europe Radical Right Ronald Inglehart Ruling the Void The Transformation of European Social Democracy UKIP;Nigel Farage;UK Independence Party;National Front;Marine Le Pen;Jean-Marie Le Pen;populist;populism;anti-austerity;democratic socialism;social democracy;nationalism;Catherine Blaiklock;conservatism;protectionism;anti-immigration;anti-globalism;nationalist;right-wing;left-wing;ultranationalism;liberalism;climate change denial;anti-feminist;anti-immigrant;anti-feminism;Post-democracy;Colin Crouch;Citizen Politics;Russell Dalton;Crisis without End?;Andrew Gamble;Voting Radical Right in Western Europe;Airo Hino;West European Politics in the Age of Globalization comparative politics electoral studies firm competition green party industrial organization nativism party competition party politics political parties voter appeal POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Process / Political Parties bisacsh Political parties Europe Populismus (DE-588)4129521-3 gnd rswk-swf Parteiensystem (DE-588)4075906-4 gnd rswk-swf Politischer Wandel (DE-588)4175047-0 gnd rswk-swf Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 gnd rswk-swf Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 g Parteiensystem (DE-588)4075906-4 s Politischer Wandel (DE-588)4175047-0 s Populismus (DE-588)4129521-3 s DE-604 Hobolt, Sara Binzer 1977- (DE-588)1047875969 aut Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-691-19475-2 (DE-604)BV046769488 https://doi.org/10.1515/9780691206547 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
