English Summary Boccaccio 2013: The Poetics of the Decameron and Two Ways How to Be a Human Being The goal of this book is to offer a collection of essays at the occasion of seven hundredth anniversary of Boccaccio s birth. It is meant to provide the Czech reader some of the main criti cal questions concerning the Decameron. Its contents are divi ded into three sections: an introduction to Boccaccio s work and an overall analysis of compositional principles of the Decame ron and its poetics; an analysis of the first day and the first tale story; and an analysis of the tenth day and the last tale story. The first chapter briefly deals with Boccaccio s entire literary work and elaborates about the specific features of the Decameron: the flexibility of the novella form which can encompass characte ristics of different genres; the possibilities which the intertextuality between individual tales derives from the frame story; the description of the Black Death in Florence and the contrasting effort on the part of the narrators to build a perfect civilization; the question of women s readership and the consoling function of the Decameron; its poetics based on realism and relativism. In the chapter about the first day in the Decameron, we consi der a way to classify its narrative material. As far as the charac ters are concerned, we divide them into different social groups, using also the well-known division of medieval society into bellatores, oratores and laboratores. At the same time, however, we argue that Boccaccio did not comply with any abstract pattern but instead
tried as accurately as possible to capture the current
138 social divisions. Thematically the theme of a well thought-out speech act (a lie, a defence, a joke, etc.) and its effect is the most dominant one. The Tale of Ser Ciappelletto can be understood as an expres sion of the poetics of subversion and parody, which affects pre dominantly the form of confession and the genre of hagiogra phy. Ciappelletto is described as the worst person ever to be born, who has committed evil throughout his entire life. As his life is nearing the end, though, he resorts to an outrageous sin of false confession, which paradoxically results in the victory of piety. His lies render his remains an object of folk worship; therefore, in the end the tale can be interpreted as the victory of God s plan and an example of God s benignity. The tenth day of the Decameron brings stories about people who have performed any magnanimous or generous action for love or for other honourable thing. It is an atypical series of ta les wherein Boccaccio withdraws from the real world and mo ves away from his empirical morality. His goal is to depict the highest virtues embodied by characters too virtuous to walk the streets of Florence. Thus he sets the plot in remote places and indefinite times. Stylistically we likewise enter an entirely diffe rent world: here we encounter mostly long stories, delivered in polished language, flowing with a steady rhythm and made of carefully constructed long sentences and soulful dialogues. In these chapters we provide and critically assess the exis ting research in the subject, including the recent trends which see the
tenth day as an ironic palinode of the Decameron, whe rein Boccaccio allegedly demonstrates the absurdity of the exemplary tales. We do not, however, share this position and continue in the line of Vittore Branca s ascension interpretative model and in the light of Aristotle s Ethics and Thomas Aqui nas s commentaries on it.
139 The climax of the tenth day is the Griselda story, which has become the subject of very contradictory interpretations. We briefly gloss over the most interesting ways of reading this story and subscribe to its now largely rejected interpretation as an exemplary story with mariological and christological connota tions. We believe it is possible to read the story as the highest example of both virtue as well as humility, the latter also re flecting one s relationship to God, as it is later explicitly shown by Petrarch in his version of the story of Griselda.

English Summary Boccaccio 2013: The Poetics of the Decameron and Two Ways How to Be a Human Being The goal of this book is to offer a collection of essays at the occasion of seven hundredth anniversary of Boccaccio's birth. It is meant to provide the Czech reader some of the main criti cal questions concerning the Decameron. Its contents are divi ded into three sections: an introduction to Boccaccio's work and an overall analysis of compositional principles of the Decame ron and its poetics; an analysis of the first day and the first tale story; and an analysis of the tenth day and the last tale story. The first chapter briefly deals with Boccaccio's entire literary work and elaborates about the specific features of the Decameron: the flexibility of the novella form which can encompass characte ristics of different genres; the possibilities which the intertextuality between individual tales derives from the frame story; the description of the Black Death in Florence and the contrasting effort on the part of the narrators to build a perfect civilization; the question of women's readership and the consoling function of the Decameron; its poetics based on realism and relativism.
His lies render his remains an object of folk worship; therefore, in the end the tale can be interpreted as the victory of God's plan and an example of God's benignity.
We do not, however, share this position and continue in the line of Vittore Branca's ascension interpretative model and in the light of Aristotle's Ethics and Thomas Aqui nas's commentaries on it.
139 The climax of the tenth day is the Griselda story, which has become the subject of very contradictory interpretations. We briefly gloss over the most interesting ways of reading this story and subscribe to its now largely rejected interpretation as an exemplary story with mariological and christological connota tions. We believe it is possible to read the story as the highest example of both virtue as well as humility, the latter also re flecting one's relationship to God, as it is later explicitly shown by Petrarch in his version of the story of Griselda. |
