Summary Supported by England and the Netherlands in 1625, Christian IV of Denmark-Norway started his attempt to fight the Habsburg-Catholic offensive in the Holy Roman Empire. After numerous fruitless military manoeuvres during the year, it was Albrecht of Wallenstein, general of the new Imperial army, who decided where the war would be fought in the first half of 1626. Via capturing both the Halberstadt and Magdeburg regions and the Dessau Bridge, the strategic but defenceless area fell into his hands. The importance of the Dessau Bridge grew dramatically, because it was finally possible to start (via the river Elbe) the fast delivery of people and material resources from Bohemia and other Habsburg lands to the army. The focus of this study is primarily the battle of Dessau Bridge, but it also discusses military move ments of the armies between the autumn of 1625 and spring of 1626. In the selected period, Mansfeld’s position was defined both by formal obligations towards the King of England and the real (very limi ted) military might and funds he had at his disposal. During the months before the battle, the king Christian IV accommodated many of his ally General Mansfelds’s requests and strongly relied on his military skills. Mansfeld’s position was however fragile, and largely dependent on Christian’s favour. The number of mercenaries in Mansfeld’s company before the Battle of Dessau Bridge was only slightly above five or six thousand men. Mansfeld understood the importance of the Elbe as a line of defence against the Empire’s strength in numbers, the significance of
Dessau Bridge for the Imperials and the weaknesses of the king’s army divided into several independently operating companies. The battle showed that he overestimated his strength and failed to anticipate the intentions of the enemy. Mansfeld was also hoping to receive help from the Danish general Hans Philipp Fuchs von Bimbach, but Fuchs disbanded his company during his withdrawal from the region near Tangermünde before Wallenstein’s advancing army, and, truth be told, the Danish general never wanted to fully cooperate, because he was offended by the king’s decision to make him subordinate to Mansfeld. When Mansfeld sent his key proposals to organise a joint attack on Wallenstein, Christian IV did not write a single line in reply. At the same time, the king weakened his main army through unimportant actions of the smaller companies. Instead of coordinating a multi-pronged attack on Wallenstein, he celebrated his birthday in his camp at Wolfenbüttel on 22 April. Was he once again enjoying the com pany of bottomless barrels of wine? This is not an attempt to make light of the situation - several weeks before the battle, on 30 March, Oberstlieutenant Thomas Sigmund von Schlammersdorff complained to Christian Wilhelm of Brandenburg that his audience with the king had been worthless, as “the king was drunk again today”.1 108
Mansfelďs ambitious plan fell to pieces from the very start. Wallenstein excellently used his central position to deal with his foes one at a time. Besides the present historiographic literature, several ar chive sources were closely analysed, especially the correspondence between Ernst von Mansfeld and Christian IV from autumn 1625 to June 1626 and the correspondence of Albrecht of Wallenstein and the Imperial colonel Johann Aldringen. It was helpful to study the short texts about the battle published as flyers (pamphlets) already a few weeks after. Information from some of those entered contemporary literature through the first historiographical works dating to the seveteenth century, but many were left completely forgotten. Summary Supported by England and the Netherlands in 1625, Christian IV of Denmark-Norway started his attempt to fight the Habsburg-Catholic offensive in the Holy Roman Empire. After numerous fruitless military manoeuvres during the year, it was Albrecht of Wallenstein, general of the new Imperial army, who decided where the war would be fought in the first half of 1626. Via capturing both the Halberstadt and Magdeburg regions and the Dessau Bridge, the strategic but defenceless area fell into his hands. The importance of the Dessau Bridge grew dramatically, because it was finally possible to start (via the river Elbe) the fast delivery of people and material resources from Bohemia and other Habsburg lands to the army. The focus of this study is primarily the battle of Dessau Bridge, but it also discusses military move ments of the armies between the autumn of 1625 and spring of 1626. In the selected period, Mansfeld’s position was defined both by formal obligations towards the King of England and the real (very limi ted) military might and funds he had at his disposal. During the months before the battle, the king Christian IV accommodated many of his ally General Mansfelds’s requests and strongly relied on his military skills. Mansfeld’s position was however fragile, and largely dependent on Christian’s favour. The number of mercenaries in Mansfeld’s company before the Battle of Dessau Bridge was only slightly above five or six thousand men. Mansfeld understood the importance of the Elbe as a line of defence against the Empire’s strength in numbers, the significance of
Dessau Bridge for the Imperials and the weaknesses of the king’s army divided into several independently operating companies. The battle showed that he overestimated his strength and failed to anticipate the intentions of the enemy. Mansfeld was also hoping to receive help from the Danish general Hans Philipp Fuchs von Bimbach, but Fuchs disbanded his company during his withdrawal from the region near Tangermünde before Wallenstein’s advancing army, and, truth be told, the Danish general never wanted to fully cooperate, because he was offended by the king’s decision to make him subordinate to Mansfeld. When Mansfeld sent his key proposals to organise a joint attack on Wallenstein, Christian IV did not write a single line in reply. At the same time, the king weakened his main army through unimportant actions of the smaller companies. Instead of coordinating a multi-pronged attack on Wallenstein, he celebrated his birthday in his camp at Wolfenbüttel on 22 April. Was he once again enjoying the com pany of bottomless barrels of wine? This is not an attempt to make light of the situation - several weeks before the battle, on 30 March, Oberstlieutenant Thomas Sigmund von Schlammersdorff complained to Christian Wilhelm of Brandenburg that his audience with the king had been worthless, as “the king was drunk again today”.1 108
Mansfelďs ambitious plan fell to pieces from the very start. Wallenstein excellently used his central position to deal with his foes one at a time. Besides the present historiographic literature, several ar chive sources were closely analysed, especially the correspondence between Ernst von Mansfeld and Christian IV from autumn 1625 to June 1626 and the correspondence of Albrecht of Wallenstein and the Imperial colonel Johann Aldringen. It was helpful to study the short texts about the battle published as flyers (pamphlets) already a few weeks after. Information from some of those entered contemporary literature through the first historiographical works dating to the seveteenth century, but many were left completely forgotten.
