Zusammenfassung: | Christian filmmaking, done outside of the corporate Hollywood industry and produced for Christian churches, affected a significant audience of church people. Protestant denominations and individuals believed that they could preach and teach more effectively through the mass medium of film. Although suspicion toward the film industry marked many conservatives during the early 1930s, many Christian leaders came to believe in the power of technology to convert or to morally instruct people. Thus the growth of a Christian film industry was an extension of the Protestant tradition of preaching, with the films becoming celluloid sermons. Celluloid Sermons is the first historical study of this phenomenon. Terry Lindvall and Andrew Quicke highlight key characters, studios, and influential films of the movement from 1930 to 1986—such as the Billy Graham Association, with its major WorldWide Pictures productions of films like The Hiding Place, Ken Curtis’ Gateway Films, the apocalyptic "end-time" films by Mark IV (e.g. Thief in the Night), and the instructional video-films of Dobson’s Focus on the Family--assessing the extent to which the church’s commitment to filmmaking accelerated its missions and demonstrating that its filmic endeavors had the unintended consequence of contributing to the secularization of liberal denominations |

Jun 2020) Christian filmmaking, done outside of the corporate Hollywood industry and produced for Christian churches, affected a significant audience of church people. Thief in the Night), and the instructional video-films of Dobson’s Focus on the Family--assessing the extent to which the church’s commitment to filmmaking accelerated its missions and demonstrating that its filmic endeavors had the unintended consequence of contributing to the secularization of liberal denominations In English Geschichte 1930-1986 gnd rswk-swf RELIGION / Christianity / General bisacsh Christian films History and criticism United States Christian films United States History and criticism Christianity in motion pictures United States Christianity in motion pictures Motion picture industry History 20th century United States Motion picture industry United States History 20th century Motion pictures in Christian education Motion pictures Religious aspects Christianity Film (DE-588)4017102-4 gnd rswk-swf Religiöser Film (DE-588)4177724-4 gnd rswk-swf Protestantismus (DE-588)4047538-4 gnd rswk-swf Filmproduktion (DE-588)4124971-9 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Protestantismus (DE-588)4047538-4 s Film (DE-588)4017102-4 s Filmproduktion (DE-588)4124971-9 s Geschichte 1930-1986 z 1\p DE-604 Religiöser Film (DE-588)4177724-4 s 2\p DE-604 Quicke, Andrew aut https://www.degruyter.com/isbn/9780814765357 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
