THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY FORTY MARTYRS IN OHRID Vlado Malenko The occasion for this scientific presentation of the results of the archaeological investigations and the conservation, restoration and prevention works on the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs in Ohrid is the celebration of the patron feast day on the 22nd of March 2010. For this purpose we have prepared this monograph with which we wanted to make a contribution to the immortalization of the sacred treasure of this saintly town - the eternal never-ending spiritual spring. The site “Holy Forty Martyrs” is located between the houses of the Shandanovi and Mijajlovic (now Simonovič) family and “Ilindenska” street; “Boro Shain” street and the path from the southern side connecting the two streets. (P1.2). On the north-eastern part there are visible remains of chipped stone, freestone and brick fragments, bound with lime mortar. The house at 17 “Boro Shain” տէր. is appending to it from the eastern side and on the southern side a walled-in icon of chipped stone and bricks bound with mud is placed, marking the existence of the church (im.l). Here we shall present the results obtained from the four archaeological interventions at the site “Holy Forty Martyrs” with review on the research and the obtained scientific knowledge from this endeavour1. In 1989 preparatory ground works for building a new residential house started at the site located at cadastre plot nr. 16089 (17 “Boro Shain” տէր.). In the western part of the new location a cultural horizon of a ruin (crushed stone, lime mortar with rare presence of brick and
fresco fragments) was discovered. The competent institution had undertaken protective archaeological investigations. 1 1989, N. Pochucha Kuzman, head, M. Iloska, V. Shecherova, members; 2005, V. Malenko, head, B.Taneski, S. Nelovska, members; 2006, M. Ivanoski, head, P.Ardzanliev, I. Matjanoska, members; 2007, S.Karpuzova, head, V. Todoroska, M.Tutkoski, members. 23
At the area of the south-western comer of the new location the north-eastern part of the church and a part of the refectory was discovered (im.2). It had been built as a combination of cmshed stone and fragmented bricks bound with lime mortar. The preserved height of the walls from the floor level was between 0.80 and 1.36 m, while the width 0.68 m. At the discovered part of the altar wall, at the interior, were preserved remains of fresco-painting with recognizable representations of three archpriests (im.3). This find confirmed the traditional belief of the local population for the existence of a sacral building dedicated to the forty martyrs of Sebaste. Based on the results of the protective and research activities and the obtained scientific knowledge, the approximate dimension of the church had been determined. The archaeological investigations revealed the stratigraphy to the bedrock, while the preserved architectonic remains determined the dimension of the church with its adjacent paraecclesion, determining the constmction phases and the destmctions suffered on many turns, especially in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century2. After the clearing of the space, the very first excavations revealed that the terrain had been levelled on many occasions with fillings of residual material, enclosed with dry stone wall in which a Late Antique impost capital decorated on the two narrower sides with crosses had been built-in (im.5,Pl.III,12). The fillings at the eastern part were at a higher, while the ones at the western part at a lower level (im.6). The discovering
of the altar and the eastern parts of the church was accomplished with a methodological approach determined by the roots of the planted trees spanning over the entire surface of the altar area and around it, appending to the fresco remains, protmding them and the walls (im.7)3. 2 With constructions on the area of the site. 3 As a protective conservation approach was used the method of hemming and affixing gauze and glue on separate fragments of the frescoes. The removal of the roots was made with manual saw for avoiding vibrations and blows if using a axe or a mechanical saw. This approach contributed to the preservation of a large part of the fresco-painting and the prevention of demolishing the walls of the southeastern comer of the church. 24
From the complete revealing of the preserved architectonic remains of the church, the movable archaeological finds, as well as the observations of the terrain of the site and its vicinity, the following can be deducted: The church was positioned at the furthest south part of a natural terrace, ending in an abrupt declivity at its southern part, with a delevelling of the terrain of more than 4,0 meters (P1.3). The complete discovering of the architectonic remains of the church, according to the shape of the foundation shows that it was single-nave building (external length: 7.90 m; width 5.50 m; internal dimensions 6,50 x 5,80 m), with an apse at the eastern side, semicircular both from the interior and the exterior. Due to the specific terrain and depending on the season in which it had been built, its basic orientation deviates towards northeast-southwest. It is placed on a levelled ruin of tamped clay with small crushed stones, fragments of construction ceramics, bricks and tegualae in the lower horizon. With a mild slant from north to south it was built with crushed stone in irregular manner with presence of fragmented bricks of different thickness. There are Late Antique spolia built-in and lime mortar with compact structure. In the same time with the building of the church, on the northern side, a paraecclesion had been built. It could be entered through an entrance on the western wall, which, constructively and for communication reasons, was connected with the church (P1.3). Most probably, this paraecclesion enabled communication with the complex of buildings located
to the north towards the registered church of St. Athanasius (PI. 1). The foundations of the church are shallow. In the lower zone there were larger stones (with irregular shape) on a foundation of scattered stones (im.6,8). Regarding the preservation state of the architectonic remains of the church, its north-eastern part is well preserved, while the south western one had suffered demolition. The altar space is preserved at a height between 0.90 - 1.50 m, while the north-eastern comer up to 2.30 m from the floor level. The northern wall with the entrance (1 m) to the church 25
from the paraecclesion, with its preserved lintel and square niche (im.6) is preserved at the same height. The northern wall is damaged at the western side and built again more recently to serve as a postament for placement of a new terrace above the paraecclesion and the area around it. In the centre of the altar wall there is an impost capital built-in. It has a representation of a cross in the narrower part and it is actually the base of the apse window (im.9). To the north of the altar apse, at the lower zone of the eastern wall, the remains of the vaulted niche of the prothesis were preserved. There was most probably an identical niche to the south of the altar apse at the eastern wall of the diaconicon. The church was vaulted with a semi spherical vault from which there are only traces of separate fragments of the mortar, which is also to be seen on the preserved remains of the north eastern comer destroyed with the demolishing of the auxiliary room of the old house of the Mijajlovi family (im.l). From the interior side the walls had been plastered and fresco-painted. There are preserved remains in the altar and in the north-eastern comer. In the centre of the altar area there is a square postament (0.60 x 0.55 m) for the table, built out of cmshed stone, fragmented bricks and tegulae bound with lime mortar at a preserved height of 0.90 m from the floor level (im.9). At 1.60 m to the west of the table of oblation under the floor level there is a shallow dug in the direction north-south to the northern and the southern wall, in which we have discovered a large number
of roughly (by force) chipped marble fragments, two silver and one bronze coin. The shallow dug, with the partially preserved sides and foundation, represents the area in which the postament of the stone church iconostasis was placed (im.9). The conservation treatment of the marble fragments revealed parts of the marble constmction of the iconostasis used as spolia (they belonged to processed parapet slabs, lintels and side posts) from Early Christian basilicas (T.III, 10-13). At one of the fragments ֊ a profiled beam, had two monograms carved on its bottom side, one of which is fragmentarily preserved (T.III, 10). 26
The western wall of the church descends obliquely from north to south adjusting to the configuration of the terrain. From the north-western to the south-western comer, there are fragmentarily preserved remains of lime mortar, rendered as the negative from the wall foundation. At the south-western comer the preservation state of the mortar is more accentuated, determining the dimensions of the comer itself. The entrance in the church is on the western side, most probably with a width of 1,20 m. The question whether there was an open porch or a narthex (pronaos) at the western side is still an open issue. Most probably the southern wall had been demolished out of natural reasons ֊ land slide or by human influence5, at the time when the north-eastern and the south-western comer, as well as the vault, had been demolished. During the renovation of the church, the southern wall had been placed on a deep foundation at 1.70 m under the floor level. Larger stones were placed at the foundation and in the comers (im.8). The thickness of the wall is 1 m, it had been built facing the southern side, while towards the interior of the church the stones were placed with free outlets and fragments of the fresco painting were thrown among the stones (im.8, 10). At a depth of 10 cm under the floor level, the building of the front side of the wall from the interior had started. The wall was bound with mud. In the south-eastern comer, in the altar area under the floor level, a ceramic vessel with one handle was discovered. It was encircled with a row of moderately cmshed stones (im. 11). It had
been most probably placed there during the renovation of the church, as a chrism for protection of further demolition. Remains of repeated plastering in the interior of the building had not been discovered, witnessing the impotence of the church to regain the magnificence and the splendour it had during the first phase before the demolition. Most probably, the building had to suffer from human factor. From the 19th and the first half of the 20th century on the single preserved part of the north-eastern comer of the church, lays the eastern wall of the individual residential building built in this area (P1.3, im. 12). 27
Among the partially in situ preserved floor remains in the church, the naos and the apse are paved with irregular stone slabs, while the altar area with square bricks in rows (P1.3, im.13). They are placed on a foundation of compressed earth mixed with smaller stones on lime mortar which is burnt and mixed with earth. In the interior of the building, in the horizon of the ruin and the filling, the discovered fresco fragments, among which the ones with inscriptions and saints (im.14, 15), fragments of glass vessels (T.III, 9), silver and bronze coins (T.1,5-17), fragmented marble sculpture (T.III, 10-13), fragments of ceramic vessels (T.II, 6-8), belong to the church and the first phase of its existence. The remaining movable material ֊ fragments of ceramic vessels, vessels, ceramic weights and ceramic lamps (T.III, 7,8) are from Late Antiquity (T.II, 1-5, T.IV,15-17,). Specific is the fragment of ceramic plate with a seal in the interior, representing an angel carrying a cross. It is of the African slip ceramic type. From the Late Middle Ages there are fragments of ceramic vessels (T.II,9-11), pipes (T.IV, 9-14), bronze and glass paste buttons (T.IV,6-8), originating from the times of numerous interventions in this area after the demolition of the church. 28
