Zusammenfassung: | For all of the doubts raised about the effectiveness of international aid in advancing peace and development, there are few examples of developing countries that are even relatively untouched by it. Sarah G. Phillips's When There Was No Aid offers us one such example.Using evidence from Somaliland's experience of peace-building, When There Was No Aid challenges two of the most engrained presumptions about violence and poverty in the global South. First, that intervention by actors in the global North is self-evidently useful in ending them, and second that the quality of a country's governance institutions (whether formal or informal) necessarily determines the level of peace and civil order that the country experiences.Phillips explores how popular discourses about war, peace, and international intervention structure the conditions of possibility to such a degree that even the inability of institutions to provide reliable security can stabilize a prolonged period of peace. She argues that Somaliland's post-conflict peace is grounded less in the constraining power of its institutions than in a powerful discourse about the country's structural, temporal, and physical proximity to war. Through its sensitivity to the ease with which peace gives way to war, Phillips argues, this discourse has indirectly harnessed an apparent propensity to war as a source of order |

Phillips Ithaca ; London Cornell University Press [2020] © 2020 1 Online-Ressource (xx, 227 Seiten) Karte txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier For all of the doubts raised about the effectiveness of international aid in advancing peace and development, there are few examples of developing countries that are even relatively untouched by it. Through its sensitivity to the ease with which peace gives way to war, Phillips argues, this discourse has indirectly harnessed an apparent propensity to war as a source of order Geschichte 1960-2015 gnd rswk-swf African Hist & Diaspora Sociology & Social Science Somaliland, International Development, Aid, Foreign Intervention, Conflict resolution SOCIAL SCIENCE / Disasters & Disaster Relief bisacsh Humanitarian intervention Somalia Peace-building Somaliland (Secessionist government, 1991- ) Postwar reconstruction Somaliland (Secessionist government, 1991- ) Violence Somaliland (Secessionist government, 1991- ) Entwicklungshilfe (DE-588)4014948-1 gnd rswk-swf Politische Stabilität (DE-588)4128497-5 gnd rswk-swf Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4008784-0 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftliche Stabilität (DE-588)4211986-8 gnd rswk-swf Somalia (DE-588)4077509-4 gnd rswk-swf Somaliland (DE-588)7723745-6 gnd rswk-swf Somalia (DE-588)4077509-4 g Geschichte 1960-2015 z DE-604 Somaliland (DE-588)7723745-6 g Entwicklungshilfe (DE-588)4014948-1 s Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4008784-0 s Wirtschaftliche Stabilität (DE-588)4211986-8 s Politische Stabilität (DE-588)4128497-5 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-5017-4715-1 https://doi.org/10.7591/9781501747168 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext DNB Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032080169&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
