Zusammenfassung: | "This book provides a corpus of inscribed hawking rings (vervels) reported Treasure via the Portable Antiquities Scheme over the last twenty years. Since vervels are normally inscribed with information about their owners, they constitute an important social and archaeological record. This information is explored through the corpus, which shows the objects to have been owned predominantly by men of status, particularly in the Stuart period. Also included is a discussion of the development of hawking and the use of vervels, and analysis of their form, function and dating, as well as variations in design. Particularly significant is the information on their distribution, as many inscribed vervels are found in the vicinity of estates owned by the individuals mentioned upon them. This publication thus provides a unique resource to the scholar and to the casual enthusiast."--Back cover (page 4 of cover) |

British series 648 Vervel - a ring or one of several rings attached to a bird's leg for securing the bird to its perch. Also used for identifying a bird's ownership "This book provides a corpus of inscribed hawking rings (vervels) reported Treasure via the Portable Antiquities Scheme over the last twenty years. This publication thus provides a unique resource to the scholar and to the casual enthusiast."--Back cover (page 4 of cover) Geschichte 1500-1700 gnd rswk-swf Inschrift (DE-588)4027107-9 gnd rswk-swf Vogelhaltung (DE-588)4121879-6 gnd rswk-swf Funde (DE-588)4071507-3 gnd rswk-swf Falken (DE-588)4153609-5 gnd rswk-swf Metallring (DE-588)4198551-5 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Falconry / Antiquities Falconry / Animal marking Falconry / England / History / 17th century Falconry / England / History / 16th century Metal-work / England / History / 17th century Metal-work / England / History / 16th century Metal-work / England / Catalogs Inscriptions, English / England Inscriptions, English / England / Catalogs Silverwork / England / History / 17th century Silverwork, Tudor Silverwork / England / Catalogs Silverwork, Tudor / Catalogs Falconry / England / History / To 1500 England / Antiquities England / Antiquities / Catalogs Elite (Social sciences) / England / History / 17th century Elite (Social sciences) / England / History / 16th century England / Social life and customs / 17th century England / Social life and customs / 16th century Portable Antiquities Scheme (Great Britain) Antiquities Elite (Social sciences) Falconry Inscriptions, English Manners and customs Metal-work Silverwork England To 1699 Catalogs History Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Metallring (DE-588)4198551-5 s Inschrift (DE-588)4027107-9 s Falken (DE-588)4153609-5 s Vogelhaltung (DE-588)4121879-6 s Geschichte 1500-1700 z Funde (DE-588)4071507-3 s DE-604 Richardson, Ian Verfasser (DE-588)1209954184 aut BAR.
