233 Summary This is second and final volume of Biographical dictionary of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague for years 1945-2008. Our faculty founded by Emperor Charles IV has been in existence since medieval ages teaching students from Kingdom of Bohemia as well as those coming from abroad. Throughout its history the faculty fulfilled various roles, apart from educating new generations of physicians, there was also medical research, oversight of pharmacists, surgeons, midwives and other professionals historically excluded from university education. During the last six and half century our school underwent both periods of expansion as well as decline with complex and sometimes picturesque past. This has been explained in several books, particularly in František Kavka - Josef Petrán (eds.), A History of Charles University, ѴЫ. 1-2, published in English (Prague 2001). However, since the 1980s research ers have also been compiling biographical dictionaries. When this idea was conceived for the first time in 1970s, little did the researchers know that it would take more than three decades to finish the task. During this period historians working at the Institute for History of Medicine first published two volumes covering period between 1348 and 1939. However, this list of professors, docents (i.e. associate professors), and assistant professors was not complete. In 1882 the Austrian-Hungarian government decided to split Prague university into two branches based on language of their teachers and students. Consequently, during the period 1883-1921 there
were two parallel universities with two facul ties of medicine: Czech Charles-Ferdinand University (Karlo-Ferdinan dova univerzita) and its German counterpart (Karl-Ferdinands Univer sität). Their names were changed in 1921 when the Czech branch got rid of name Ferdinand associated with Habsbourg reign in Central Europe and was called only Charles University. At the same moment the Ger man branch was renamed German University in Prague. This duality ended in 1945 when the German university perished as a result of post war retaliation of Czechoslovak government against former oppressors.
234 The first two volumes of our biographical dictionary recorded during the period 1882-1945 only employees of the Czech university. In order to remedy this flaw, Ludmila Hlaváčková and Petr Svobodný published in 1998 Biographisches Lexikon der Deutschen Medizinischen Fakultät in Prag 1883-1945, which was tracking specifically all the teachers of the German branch thus completing list of all the professors working at medical faculties in Prague before the end of World War II. Shortly after that we made decision to extend the dictionary up to present times. This time the research took substantially longer than in case of previous volumes, chiefly because the First Faculty of Medicine, which is by far the largest medical school in the Czech Republic, un derwent period of dramatic growth during the post-war period. In order to keep number of entries at manageable level, we were forced to drop assistant professors from the list, leaving only full and associate pro fessors. Despite this reduction, both volumes contain together over one thousand entries. List of recorded names of assistants at the appendix of this volume adds another three thousand individuals. Apart from the biographical part as well as literary and archival sources, the first volume also contains list of faculty clinics, institutes, laboratories and other units as they were developing during the second half of the 20th century. We hope that this last addition to our collection of biographical dic tionaries with help keeping the institutional memory of the faculty and its teachers so that future generation
will make use of experience stored in our great and sometimes tumultuous past.
