SUMMARY The study “Looking Out for the Atomic Age I: Popularization of Nuclear En ergy and Power Engineering in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s” deals with pe riod ideas or images of nuclear energy and power engineering. At the same time, the images are set in the context of popularization of nuclear energy in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1950s. In Czechoslovakia, just like in other countries, the “nuclear propaganda” phenomenon was manifested mainly by a very high incidence of articles on this topic in dailies and maga zines. At the time when TV broadcasting in Czechoslovakia was still at an early stage, printed media were an important tool disseminating images of nuclear energy and power engineering among the Czechoslovak public. Nat urally, the images were supplemented by radio programs, films, and other means of popularization. The book focuses predominantly on official (pronuclear) narratives about nuclear energy and power engineering, which were presented in popularization publications and Czechoslovak press in the 1950s and were in compliance with the policy of the government and the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia at that time. The first part of the book, titled “The creation of the Atomic Age”, concentrates on the popular ization of nuclear energy in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s, i.e. examines the context in which articles and books on nuclear energy and power engineer ing were produced. It also deals with authors writing about nuclear energy and printed media on the pages of which Czechoslovak readers could get acquainted with nuclear energy and
power engineering, or their images, as well as publishing houses producing popularization literature on the topic. The chapter also introduces two Czechoslovak press campaigns which took place in the mid-1950s - the commissioning of the first Soviet nuclear power plant in Obninsk in 1954, and the Soviet Union’s offer to help Czechoslova kia and other people’s democracies with their peace nuclear programs at the beginning of 1955. The second part of the book, “A guide through the Atom ic Age”, examines some concepts and ideas of the future Atomic Age, from period ideological interpretations of this awaited era to concrete descrip tions of future achievements, whether means of transport or thermonucle ar power plants. The third chapter, “The leaving of the Atomic Age”, shows how images of nuclear energy and power engineering have been changing since the 1960s and how the life stories of those who created the nuclear energy images in the 1950s were developing. The study demonstrates that the popularization of nuclear energy in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1950s was facilitated by support of the government (and the Communist 125
Party of Czechoslovakia) and the fact that nuclear energy was an “in” thing at that time. In the 1950s, nuclear energy was not typically popular only in Czechoslovakia or other countries of the Soviet bloc; the same applied to Western states, and the nuclear energy popularity therefore was a global phenomenon. The popularity of the topic resulted not only from spontane ous interest of people, but also from (state-) organized propaganda cam paigns. The Czechoslovak government was supporting the popularization, to legitimize both the energy policy (especially since January 1955) and the Communist regime. The popularization of nuclear physics in Czechoslova kia thus had two faces: a global, practical one, related to the energy poli cy, an analogy of which could be found, for example, in the United States; and a more specific, ideological one, related to the praise of socialism and the Soviet Union. Many authors, including scientists (mostly nuclear phys icists, including Soviet ones), popularizers of science and technology, jour nalists, writers, or representatives of nuclear energy organizations, helped spread magnificent visions of peaceful uses of nuclear energy among peo ple. Although belonging to different professional communities, their texts were basically very similar. The topic was extremely popular, as illustrat ed by the broad range of professions of authors of texts on nuclear energy and power engineering, and by the quantity and diversity of Czechoslovak newspapers and magazines in which articles on nuclear energy and pow er engineering often appeared at
that time - from technical periodicals to dailies to lifestyle and literary magazines. In the mid-1950s, Czechoslovak texts popularizing nuclear energy contained not only the images and mo tifs mentioned above, but also descriptions of concrete technical (but not only technical) inventions the Atomic Age was expected to provide. Var ious articles kept promising nuclear automobiles, locomotives, airplanes, or batteries for general use; the achievements of the Atomic Age were of ten seen as deserving a separate article, enjoying an extraordinarily high level of attention, and not just in Czechoslovakia. Since 1960, issues relat ed to nuclear energy and power engineering did not appear as frequently as in the mid 1950s in Czechoslovak newspapers and magazines; the num ber of books popularizing the topic dropped as well. The topic of nuclear power generation was more frequent (in the context of the Czechoslovak nuclear program) than that of nuclear energy. Public interest had also shift ed to other topics, particularly the conquest of space. However, it did not mean that the topic of nuclear energy and power engineering was confined only to pages of technical and scientific periodicals. It continued to appear in dailies and lifestyle magazines. However, the image of the Atomic Age 126
had petered out. Instead of across-the-board promises of the new atomic era, readers were being promised their fragments, most frequently nucle ar power plants. With the collapse of the unified Stalinist vision, the Atom ic Age disintegrated into specific and more realistic goals. To put it simply, the period of real socialism in Czechoslovakia also marked the beginning of a “real Atomic Age”. 127

SUMMARY The study “Looking Out for the Atomic Age I: Popularization of Nuclear En ergy and Power Engineering in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s” deals with pe riod ideas or images of nuclear energy and power engineering. At the same time, the images are set in the context of popularization of nuclear energy in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1950s. In Czechoslovakia, just like in other countries, the “nuclear propaganda” phenomenon was manifested mainly by a very high incidence of articles on this topic in dailies and maga zines. At the time when TV broadcasting in Czechoslovakia was still at an early stage, printed media were an important tool disseminating images of nuclear energy and power engineering among the Czechoslovak public. Nat urally, the images were supplemented by radio programs, films, and other means of popularization. The book focuses predominantly on official (pronuclear) narratives about nuclear energy and power engineering, which were presented in popularization publications and Czechoslovak press in the 1950s and were in compliance with the policy of the government and the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia at that time. The first part of the book, titled “The creation of the Atomic Age”, concentrates on the popular ization of nuclear energy in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s, i.e. examines the context in which articles and books on nuclear energy and power engineer ing were produced. It also deals with authors writing about nuclear energy and printed media on the pages of which Czechoslovak readers could get acquainted with nuclear energy and
power engineering, or their images, as well as publishing houses producing popularization literature on the topic. The chapter also introduces two Czechoslovak press campaigns which took place in the mid-1950s - the commissioning of the first Soviet nuclear power plant in Obninsk in 1954, and the Soviet Union’s offer to help Czechoslova kia and other people’s democracies with their peace nuclear programs at the beginning of 1955. The second part of the book, “A guide through the Atom ic Age”, examines some concepts and ideas of the future Atomic Age, from period ideological interpretations of this awaited era to concrete descrip tions of future achievements, whether means of transport or thermonucle ar power plants. The third chapter, “The leaving of the Atomic Age”, shows how images of nuclear energy and power engineering have been changing since the 1960s and how the life stories of those who created the nuclear energy images in the 1950s were developing. The study demonstrates that the popularization of nuclear energy in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1950s was facilitated by support of the government (and the Communist 125
Party of Czechoslovakia) and the fact that nuclear energy was an “in” thing at that time. In the 1950s, nuclear energy was not typically popular only in Czechoslovakia or other countries of the Soviet bloc; the same applied to Western states, and the nuclear energy popularity therefore was a global phenomenon. The popularity of the topic resulted not only from spontane ous interest of people, but also from (state-) organized propaganda cam paigns. The Czechoslovak government was supporting the popularization, to legitimize both the energy policy (especially since January 1955) and the Communist regime. The popularization of nuclear physics in Czechoslova kia thus had two faces: a global, practical one, related to the energy poli cy, an analogy of which could be found, for example, in the United States; and a more specific, ideological one, related to the praise of socialism and the Soviet Union. Many authors, including scientists (mostly nuclear phys icists, including Soviet ones), popularizers of science and technology, jour nalists, writers, or representatives of nuclear energy organizations, helped spread magnificent visions of peaceful uses of nuclear energy among peo ple. Although belonging to different professional communities, their texts were basically very similar. The topic was extremely popular, as illustrat ed by the broad range of professions of authors of texts on nuclear energy and power engineering, and by the quantity and diversity of Czechoslovak newspapers and magazines in which articles on nuclear energy and pow er engineering often appeared at
that time - from technical periodicals to dailies to lifestyle and literary magazines. In the mid-1950s, Czechoslovak texts popularizing nuclear energy contained not only the images and mo tifs mentioned above, but also descriptions of concrete technical (but not only technical) inventions the Atomic Age was expected to provide. Var ious articles kept promising nuclear automobiles, locomotives, airplanes, or batteries for general use; the achievements of the Atomic Age were of ten seen as deserving a separate article, enjoying an extraordinarily high level of attention, and not just in Czechoslovakia. Since 1960, issues relat ed to nuclear energy and power engineering did not appear as frequently as in the mid 1950s in Czechoslovak newspapers and magazines; the num ber of books popularizing the topic dropped as well. The topic of nuclear power generation was more frequent (in the context of the Czechoslovak nuclear program) than that of nuclear energy. Public interest had also shift ed to other topics, particularly the conquest of space. However, it did not mean that the topic of nuclear energy and power engineering was confined only to pages of technical and scientific periodicals. It continued to appear in dailies and lifestyle magazines. However, the image of the Atomic Age 126
had petered out. Instead of across-the-board promises of the new atomic era, readers were being promised their fragments, most frequently nucle ar power plants. With the collapse of the unified Stalinist vision, the Atom ic Age disintegrated into specific and more realistic goals. To put it simply, the period of real socialism in Czechoslovakia also marked the beginning of a “real Atomic Age”. 127
