Summary On History the Folk and People František Kutnar (1903-1983), anative of Mlázovice, a village in the foothills of the Krkonoše mountains, had remained faithful to his birthplace all his life and he also spent the end of his life there. He was profoundly devoted to the village and he found it to be both his inspiration and refuge, which is proved by his scholarly work and his memoires, published recently (Děkuji životu, Praha 2017; Thanks to Life, Prague 2017). He was a historian whose significance has not been valued yet - not in the Czech historiography, let alone in the European one. He was a historian drawing his sources from modem European historiographies; he had a very harmonious relationship to the French historiography, and, naturally, like many of his contemporaries, he was well versed in the German historiography. Although he was not entirely rid of the chance to teach at universities or to publish, he was gradually being pushed away from the centre after the year 1948, which was to the disadvantage of the Czech historiography: he was not allowed to teach at Charles University in Prague for a long time, however, he commuted to Olomouc to teach at the reopened university where he contributed to the boom of his field of study, together with other scholars similarly “disadvantaged”. Instead ofbeing able to publish in prestigious Czech, or rather European scholarly journals, many of his principal works were published in periodicals that hardly found their way to broader public, or

It was not possible either for large monographs or even their drafts to be published; works he had spent decades working on himself or in cooperation with others have not been published yet, which is to the disadvantage of the Czech historiography. In spite of the unfavourable situation, the book called Malé dějiny brambor (The BriefHistory ofPotatoes) was published; it was perhaps due to the seemingly marginal subject-matter that none of the Communist Party ideologists or the heads of historical institutes thwarted its publishing. More probably, however, none of those in charge of making decisions did understand how brilliant the work was and how much it corresponded with European research streams in historiography. It took a long time for his work Obrozenské vlastenectví a nacionalismus (Patriotism and Nationalism ofthe Czech National Revival), which was to be Kutnar s habilitation thesis, to be published, meeting with the resistance during the Nazi occupation as well as after February events of 1948. In fact, it was published late after Kutnar s death thanks to his heirs and Czech historians Jiří Rak and Martin Kučera. Nonetheless, what is paradoxical is that one ofKutnar s key works, Přehledné dějiny českého dějepisectví (.A Concise History of Czech Historiography ), was given consent to be published in the 1970s; Kutnar s name actually shielded the names ofhis colleagues and co authors, which have been added to the title page of the book only since the 1990s. The present edition of Kutnar s works shall
contribute to a deeper and more systematic understanding and, perhaps even re-exploration, of one of the layers ofhis work ֊ historical-methodological work. Some of the texts published here have recently been printed (as pointed out in the edition); what the present edition offers is a summarising and, to a certain extent, complete overview. Another topic-based array ofhis papers focused on the revolution of 1848, and especially the 1850s, inexactly referred to as Bachs absolutism, will deserve a separate edition one day as will also his monographs. The first paper, called Úkol vysokých škol v národě ( The National Role of Universities), was written for the February issue of the Brázda magazine which Kutnar was an affiliated author of. It was in 1939, however, and between writing the article and its planned publishing was 17th November, the day when all Czech universities were closed down by the Nazi despotic power, and when Czech students were executed and thousands of them 381
Summary: On History, the Folk and People were transported to concentration camps. Naturally, Kutnar’s paper could not be published at the time of its originating any more. The edition also offers Kutnar s papers, substantial chapters from monographs, essays, reflections and conference papers from all periods of the author s life. It is also his scholarly debut (O životě a díle Ignáce Cornovy, On the Life and Work of Ignatius Cornova), elaborated under the supervision ofJosef Pekař, a significant Czech inter-war historian, that finds its place in the edition as well as other Kutnar s papers from his last period of life - the early 1980s. Summary: On History, the Folk and People The edition On History՝, the Folk and People opens with an introductory theoretical-historiographical paper by Zdeněk Beneš and closes with a text by František Lom, a long-time colleague of Kutnar s; it is a text that was written in 1978 to celebrate František Kutnar s anniversary - František Kutnar pětasedmdesátníkem (František Kutnar turning seventy-five). František Kutnar used to write his texts in a very neat and well-legible hand-writing which was hard to be mistaken for anybody else s. He was a conscientious researcher and author, which is why a lot of manuscripts of papers published later remained stored in his personal fund. He worked on some topics for years and addressed them to a variety of audience during the course of time: to scholars through scholarly publishing and to broader public through lecturing, be it university students, people interested in regional history or the audience of his public lectures, e.g. in the City Library in Prague. The comparison of a manuscript and a published version, or even published versions in some cases, usually points out minor differences - orthographic or rather stylistic; sometimes, however, there are substantial passages that could not be published on the grounds of ideology. Of course, these texts are specially commented on in the commentary. The edition also offers texts that could not have been published during Kutnar s life; if so, it is stated in the commentary to these texts and the reasons are explained on the basis of the conscientious author s hand-written glosses in the
manuscripts, not just by speculating and hypothesising. The edition brings single texts that had been written for half a century, during which the Czech orthography was undergoing a series of changes. The texts have been adapted to suit the current editorial rules and today s orthography. Specific expressions, regional variants and phrases and word order characteristic of Kutnar s style, however, have been preserved. The delicacy of his work needs mentioning: as results from the comparison of the published versions and the manuscript versions ofhis works kept in the Archives of the National Museum, he continued particularising and refining some of the formulations or expanding an originally plain passage, changing the word order, inserting a word or replacing a loan-word with a native one, etc. He gave his texts a very accurate care; nevertheless, despite his legible hand-writing, as mentioned above, some of his deletions were so thorough that they cannot be read, using available technology. 384
Summary: On History, the Folk and People The present volume of the edition opens with Kutnar s credo dated to 13th December 1927 when he was finishing his studies of History. Let us reprint it to manifest its atemporal value and to point at Kutnar s active and responsible attitude to life and work that meant encouragement, solace and mission for him: “Work and strong will wins. To work means to live do not work and you will die - decay. Work is motion. Work prevents from scepticism. From compulsive scepticism. Work is not only a moral duty to the society but also part of the human nature. Work is the law of active living, the source of spiritual and material values. It creates, which is vitally important and most sacred. Work anticipates and produces relaxation and entertainment. Plainly, it is the physiological consequence of work. The one does not exclude the other - they are complementary and well-balanced. Resume De ľHistoriographie, de la Nation et des Hommes František Kutnar ( 1903-1983) originaire de Mlázovic, au pied des Krkonoše, chaîne de montagne au nord de la Bohême, resta fidèle aux lieux de sa naissance où il passa toute sa vie. Une fidélité de corps et d’âme aux lieux qui furent à la fois son inspiration et son refiige. Son oeuvre de savant et ses souvenirs, qui viennent de paraître à Prague sous le titre Je remercie la vie, en témoignent. František Kutnar était historien, mais sa valeur d’historiographe n’a pas encore été reconnue, que ce soit en République tchèque ou en Europe. C ’était un historien qui puisait dans les sources les plus modemes de l’historiographie européenne, il était en accord complet avec l’historiographie française et, comme ses contemporains, avec l’historiographie allemande dans laquelle il s’orientait parfaitement. Pendant de nombreuses années, à partir de l’année 1948, même s’il ne lui était pas entièrement interdit d’enseigner à l’université ni de publier, il fut écarté du centre des recherches, écarté de l’Université Charles à Prague. Sa première oeuvre de chercheur La vie et l’oeuvre d Ignic Cornova, écrite sous la direction de l’historien tchèque Josef Pekař, y a également sa place, de même que ses derniers écrits des années 1980. Cette édition a été divisée en trois parties : 1. De l’Historiographie : Sur les questions de la structure des faits historiques. Des mots et des phrases dans un travail historique. Questionsfondamentales sur le sens des mots historiques. Valeur et rôle des évènements régionaux en histoire. Nouveaux rôles de l’historiographie tchèque et problématique de l’état actuel des recherches sur la Renaissance nationale en Bohême de l’est et du nord-est. 2. De la Nation : Introduction sur la Nation en tant que problème d’étude historique. Ecrits et chroniques populaires au temps de la Renaissance nationale. Réflexions sur la littérature populaire commémorative. Le peuple, une réalité historique. Le visage des villages tchèques. Sur les débuts de la menace économique pour la population de Moravie et son évolution au 18ème siècle. Sociologie de la campagne. 3. Hommes s’ouvre sur une étude historiographique théorique de Zdenek Beneš et s’achève avec le texte que son collègue de longue date, František Lom, écrivit en 1978 pour son jubilé : Pour les 75 ans de František Kutnar. Les manuscrits de František Kutnar sont d’une écriture à la fois soignée, précise et parfois difficilement déchiffrable. La plupart des manuscrits publiés plus tard étaient dans ses archives personnelles. C’était un chercheur et un auteur rigoureux. Sur certains sujets, Kutnar pouvait travailler pendant des années et s’adresser à des publics différents, qu’ils soient spécialistes pour les publications scientifiques, simples auditeurs pour ses conférences, étudiants des universités, public intéressé dans les régions ou à la Bibliothèque municipale de Prague. La comparaison des manuscrits et des publications montre dans certains cas de légères différences orthographiques, mais surtout stylistiques, ailleurs nous avons des passages essentiels que František Kutnar ne pouvait pas publier à l’époque de leur écriture pour des raisons idéologiques et une grande attention y a été portée dans les commentaires. Resume: De l’Historiographie, de la Nation et des Hommes également certains textes que František Kutnar n’a pas pu publier de son vivant, ce qui est rappelé avec une explication des raisons qui ne fait pas appel à des hypothèses ou des spéculations mais s’appuie sur les commentaires mêmes de l’auteur écrits avec soin sur les manuscrits conservés. Cette édition comporte des textes qui ont été publiés un demi-siècle après avoir été écrits par Kutnar. Pendant ce demi-siècle, les règles de l’orthographe tchèque ont changé. Nous avons unifié l’orthographe d’après les règles d’édition actuelles, d’après les usages orthographiques d’aujourd’hui. Nous avons gardé bien sûr les expressions spéciales, les différences régionales, les tournures stylistiques et les structures propres à Kutnar, mais si l’on compare les publications de ses textes avec ses manuscrits déposés aux Archives du Musée national, il est évident qu’il a précisé, affiné certaines formulations, développé une pensée exprimée auparavant avec trop de rudesse, changé l’ordre des mots, complété des mots, remplacé une expression empruntée à une langue étrangère par une expression tchèque, etc. Il travaillait ses textes avec une grande minutie et, bien que son écriture ait été, nous l’avons dit, très lisible, les corrections apportées rendent certains passages difficiles à décrypter. Nous ouvrons le volume de ses oeuvres avec le crédo de toute sa vie, un texte qu’il a daté du jour où il a réussi ses examens d’Etat en histoire, le 13 décembre 1927. Nous avons choisi de conclure ce résumé avec ce crédo, d’une part pour sa
valeur intemporelle, d’autre part pour mettre en évidence la démarche active et responsable de Kutnar, aussi bien dans sa vie que dans son travail qui était pour lui tout à la fois un réconfort et une mission. „Le travail et la volonté permettent de vaincre. Travailler signifie vivre, si tu ne travailles pas tu meurs, tu croupis. Le travail est mouvement. Le travail protège du scepticisme. Le scepticisme est malsain. Le travail n est pas seulement un devoir moral vis-à-vis de la société mais il est partie intégrante de la nature humaine. Le travail est une loi de la nature créatrice, une source de toutes les valeurs morales et matérielles. U crée et c’est ce qui le rend important, essentiel. Le travail suppose le repos et la distraction. Ce sont ses corollaires physiologiques. Us ne s’excluent pas mais se complètent, s équilibrent.
