Zusammenfassung: | "This book is a presentation of case studies of absent rituals, intended to explore absent ritual as a ritual category of its own by distinguishing forms or types of its manifestation, use, and appropriation. Apart from this groundbreaking exploration of a ritual category, this theme of absent ritual fits into a broader trend in ritual studies. In addition to a strong focus on ritual repertoires with a sort of 'canonical' status (rites of passage, death rites, pilgrimage, etc.), attention has recently been paid to more problem-oriented and analytical categories of ritual. These categories focus more explicitly on ritual as a process of action and reaction, on different contexts and thus on the ritual dynamics. The contributors to Absent Ritual engage this tradition of ritual categories and approaches with a very topical ritual category in hand, a type of ritual that enters a very prominent field of ritual dynamics. The first part of the book presents the concept and categories of absent ritual and the second part, the core of the book, consists of thematic case studies illustrating and exploring the categories of absent ritual"-- |

з s E N T ritual’ is a category that refers to those situations in which there are all kinds of hindrances to ritual presence. Absent ritual can be ritual that was never present, was present but disappeared, or does not yet exist. The concept of absent ritual is strongly connected with ritual criticism and normativitv. Absent ritual leads to posing questions, looking for explanations (why is it not there?) and quick accusations (who is to blame?), or searching for alternatives (which rituals can we use?). In this book, several types of absent ritual are outlined, described, and analvzed through case studies. The authors distinguish eleven categories of absent ritual: emerging, disappearing, forbidden, selective, non-healing, postponed, unseen, transferred and contested ritual, ritual indifference, and ritual secrecv. These categories are explored bv studving divorce rituals, redundant church buildings, the discussion about tire non-healing impact of monuments, the case of stillborn children, ritual secrecv in Neo-paganism and online rituals, among others.
