Resumé The importance of the Prince-Bishop of Olomouc Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelcorno (1624-1695, in office from 1664) for the culture of baroque Moravia has long been recog nised by historians and art historians. However, hitherto there were no papers in existence which discussed the cul tural and artistic activities of Bishop Karl in their entirety. This due has now been paid in the form of exhibitions held in the Archdiocesan Museums in Kroměříž and Olomouc and two rather voluminous monographs published by the Olomouc Museum of Art.1 Leading specialists on the histo ry, culture, and art of the 17th century from the universities in Brno and Olomouc, the Olomouc Museum of Art, the Arch diocesan Museums in Kroměříž and Olomouc, various state heritage preservation offices, and other institutions partici pated in compiling both of the volumes. The first volume, edited by Ondřej Jakubec, was centred mainly on personalities; the life story of Bishop Karl himself, as well as the deeds of other important figures from his cir cle. On the other hand, the overarching theme of the second volume, which you are holding in your hands now, is objects·, Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelcorno’s art collections and the works of art and architecture in the creation of which he was instrumental. This second volume opens with a section called The Places ofthe Bishop’s Memory. The two chapters it encompasses deal with the more general questions associated with the bish op’s cultural heritage. Bishop Karl perceived his construc tion projects - his chateaux, gardens, palaces, or churches -
not only as means of representing the bishopric of Olo mouc, but also as the bearers of his eternal memory. That is why, in line with the customs of the time, he used to adorn his buildings with inscription slabs and coats of arms, thanks to which many of us still view them as places associated with the memory of the bishop to this day. The desire of people from across history to remain embedded in the fruits of their work forever is nowadays studied as part of what is termed memory studies. Their perspectives are introduced to the reader in the first chapter of the opening section, written by Rostislav Švácha. The aim of the chapter is to demonstrate how the remembrance of Bishop Karl was taken charge of by different social and professional groups over time and that the precise form of the remembering was influenced by the twists and turns in the political situation, l It was possible for the exhibitions about Bishop Karl to be held and the books on him to be published thanks to the project of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic NAKI II: Applied Research and Development of the National and Cultural Identity Programme for the years 2016-2020 (DG16P02M013): Za chrám, město a vlast: Olomoucký biskup Karel z Lichtensteinu-Castelcorna uprostřed barokní Evropy / For the Temple, the City and the Country: Olomouc Bishop Karl von Lichten· stein-Castelcorno at the Heart of Baroque Europe. 529 * as well as the shifts in the assessment of i7 h-century artistic monuments. The second chapter pertaining to the opening section, by Jiří Kroupa, discusses in more detail the
memory function of architecture in the Baroque period. The author draws on the writings of the bishop’s contemporary, Karl Eusebius von Liechtenstein, who claimed that noble build ings would leave a mark that was much more lasting than any human deeds. The most extensive part of this book is the second sec tion, called The Bishop as a Builder. The building activities of Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelcorno became a remarka ble phenomenon in the second half of the 1711՝ century, as no other contemporary Moravia-based aristocrat could match or compare with the scope and extent of the bish op’s endeavours. As early as in Г664, at the time of his elec tion in Olomouc, the bishop promised he would restore the Olomouc cathedral and the chateau in Kroměříž, dam aged during the Thirty Years’ War. Later, he extended this pledge to cover the entire episcopal estate and possessions in Moravia. At the same time, he decided he would comply with the provisions of the decrees ratified at the Council of Trent and, therefore, reside in his diocese on a permanent basis, abstaining from making long journeys abroad. Thus, with extraordinary enthusiasm and verve, he then launched a massive effort at rebuilding the palaces and chateaux on the vast territory of the bishopric of Olomouc. At the beginning of the second section, Jiří Kroupa reminds us of the roots of the bishop’s architectural “taste”, which germinated from the cultural breeding ground of the archiépiscopal city of Salzburg and the Viennese impe rial court. Next, the author examines the bishop’s order ing strategy, given his
threefold role as a secular prince, a church official, and the administrator of a diocese. There after, the second section of this book continues in the form of a chapter by Radmila Prchal Pavlíčková, which dives into the bishop’s residential network. It examines the template used for its creation - Salzburg - where Karl von Lichten stein-Castelcorno served as a canon of the local chapter between 1646 and 1664, the symbolic meanings of the cha teaux and palaces that constituted the network (one of which was their ability to represent the bishop in the given place and “make him present” even at times when he was factually absent), and the hierarchy within the network, Resumé
including the varying functions of the bishop’s individu al Moravian residences. The book Sídla olomouckých biskupů (“The Residences of the Bishops of Olomouc”) by this researcher opened this topic eighteen years ago in a truly revelatory fashion.2 The team of authors of this book sought to present the bishop’s construction projects as comprehensive sets cre ated as a result of cooperation across various artistic dis ciplines, within the framework of what is usually dubbed Gesamtkunstwerk, performed by architects, stuccoers, paint ers, or sculptors. To this day, the most impressive exam ple of this kind of cooperation is the Flower Garden in Kroměříž. Most of the artists involved came from the pre sent-day Swiss canton of Ticino3 and their work was usu ally orchestrated and coordinated for the bishop by the architect Giovanni Pietro Tencalla (1629-1702), born in the Ticino village of Bissone. Towards the close of the bishop’s patronage, the cooperation between artistic disciplines slowly moved towards the rise of a uniform, integrated, and cohesive work of art. The famous Roman artist Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini called this kind of high-baroque integra tion bel composto, or a beautiful combination of architecture and painting and/or sculpture. From the ranks of the bish op’s artists, this concept was most sought and approached by the stuccoer and sculptor Baldassarre Fontana (16611733), who was acquainted with contemporary Roman art and whose expression was therefore more modern than that of the older Ticino masters. As substantiated by this book, the most significant
construction projects of Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelcorno stemmed from sophisticated architectural concepts, in the conception of which the bish op himself probably participated. The artistic decoration of the bishop’s most prominent buildings was based on a com prehensive iconographie programme, often devised by the bishop’s advisor in artistic matters, the Olomouc painterintellectual Martin Antonín Lublinský (T636-1690). The most significant of the bishop’s residences have sep arate chapters in the second section of this book dedicat ed to them. Special chapters are dedicated to Olomouc, a place where the bishop had a huge palace built and where the episcopal cathedral and the office of the episcopal con sistory were located, Brno, where Karl used to travel to for the sessions of the Moravian Diet and had an older Bishop’s Courtyard rebuilt for better representation, Vyškov, a town and a chateau located at the crossroads of important routes running through Moravia, where the bishop welcomed the widowed Empress Eleonora Gonzaga along with her daugh ter Eleanor Maria in Г670, and the Mirov castle, a place where the bishop used to spend the Carnival festivities and the warmest summer weeks and which he had spectacularly fortified as a stronghold against the Turks. Next, three more chapters focus on buildings located in the residential town of Kroměříž, the seat of the administration of the episcopal estates and the place where Karl von Lichtenstein-Castel corno resided for most of the time. He had the local cha teau refurbished (and later rebuilt) and in addition to
the original adjoining gardens, which have not been preserved to this day, the comfort of the residence was enhanced by a new Flower Garden. Moreover, the makeup of the town as a whole was improved and embellished as a result of other new buildings springing up at his command. The third section, The Bishop as a Collector, introduces us to the bishop’s collections of paintings, drawings, artistic arti sanal objects, books, and arms. Collecting was one of the activities that were expected of the high aristocracy in the 17th century. However, Bishop Karl also purchased works of art in order to decorate his residences appropriately and comply with the contemporary requirements and stand ards for furnishing an aristocratic residence. It needs to be remarked that the authors of the chapters constituting the third section of this volume argue that in some respects the bishop’s collecting activities surpassed the cultural stand ards of the time, at least in the Central European context. An exceptional piece in this regard was the bishop’s col lection of paintings, the core of which was obtained by Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelcorno in the 1670s from art dealers based in Cologne, the brothers Franz and Bernard Imstenraedt. Today, this set of paintings is considered the second most important collection of older European paint ings in the Czech Republic, second only to the collection housed in the National Gallery in Prague. Next, this publi cation reveals the special nature of the bishop’s library, on the basis not only of the richness of its content but also of the fact that
the bishop had it made more widely accessi ble in Г694, making it the oldest public library in Moravia. As far as weapons are concerned, the jewel of the episcopal armoury located at the Mirov castle was the túrák collection, which was unfortunately later dispersed. In addition to Turkish weapons, it contained various items from the Otto man Empire that served the everyday needs of its citizens. The architectural design and artistic decoration of Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelcorno’s buildings inspired other Moravian aristocratic builders. Bishop Karl used to inter vene in the design of other construction projects through advice and financial support. This role of the bishop is the topic of the fourth and last section of this volume, The Bishop as an Advisor and Patron. In compliance with the prin ciples of post-Trentine baroque, Bishop Karl ensured that the churches belonging to his diocese provided a respect able environment for worship. He furnished the Olomouc cathedral and the chapter church of St. Moritz in Kroměříž with liturgical objects. Furthermore, he founded two new shrines, the Church of St. Margaret in Mirov and the huge pilgrimage church of St. Anne at Stará Voda, to which a special chapter is devoted in the section on The Bishop as an Advisor and Patron. The next chapter of this section deals with the residences which were renovated by Bishop Karl but never inhabited by him for prolonged periods of time. They include the chateaux in Kelč and Chrlice and the Hukvaldy castle. The bishop’s advice and patronage also left their mark on the construction and
artistic projects of some of the Moravian monastic orders. This book demonstrates that the Karel z Lichtensteinu-Castelcorna (1624-1695) / Místa biskupovy paměti 2 Radmila Pavlíčková, Sídla olomouckých biskupů: Mecenáš a stavebník Karel z Liechtensteinu-Casteikorna 1664-1695, Olomouc 2001 The Ticino masters area topic dealt with by Jana Zapletalová over a prolonged period of time. closest cultural ties with the bishop were maintained by the Premonstratensian canonry based at the Klášterní Hradis ko monastery near Olomouc. Bishop Karl recommended a number of artists who had previously proved themselves in his own service for the construction of the canonry’s pil grimage church at Svatý Kopeček and the erection of its new monastery building at Klášterní Hradisko. The leading figure was the architect Giovanni Pietro Tencalla. A slight ly different character defined the bishop’s involvement in the construction projects of the Piarists, where his expertise was combined with direct patronage. The Piarist College in the House of Dietrichstein-owned Lipník nad Bečvou was financially supported by the bishop, while the colleges in the episcopal manors of Kroměříž, Stará Voda, and Příbor were founded entirely by him. Architect Tencalla, who designed these three colleges, perhaps also authored the plans for a significant new construction project of the Mora vian Dominicans, the Church of St. Michael in Olomouc. The chapters on the construction activities of Bishop Karl are interspersed with excursuses citing selected archival documents which relate to the bishop’s projects and, therefore, shed more light on the circumstances of their origination and design. Some of these contempo rary texts were discovered by the authors of the individual chapters as a result of extensive research into the bishop’s correspondence conducted by a team of archivists from Olomouc University for the purpose of this publication.4 Also thanks to this archival work, on top of their
own work, all the members of the team of authors were able to clar ify, particularise, deepen, and sometimes even modify the existing knowledge of Karl von Lichtenstein-Castclcorno and his times. Our thanks also go to our Prague-based col league Daniela Štěrbová, who drew quality ground plans of the bishop’s most prominent buildings, and to the pho tographers of the Olomouc Museum of Art, who took new pictures of these buildings. Nonetheless, the editors’ thanks are fully deserved by the entire twenty-two-member team of authors, who worked tirelessly and devotedly on this publi cation, as well as all the others who helped us with this pro ject along the way. 4 These colleagues were Soňa Chmelíková, Kryštof Kouřil, Zuzana Orálková, and Věra Slavíková. 531 * Résumé
