SUMMARY The idea of the book that you have in front of you “ТТге Transition Dilemmas” is a result of a need to reflect on the social phenomena in Kosovo society, which phenomena have become an occurrence; in a routine and some of which are causing consequences, dilemmas, crisis and misunderstanding. Some of the topics discussed in this book are: the human being and the decrease of traditional social solidarity by taking on new forms of contemporary solidarity, the increase of abuse of psychoactive substances from the young age groups, early marriages, changes in the family and tribal structure, crisis of the values and identity, addiction to social media, politics and art, fake art and kitsch, diversity and tolerance, clashes between religion and secularism, some of the misunderstood explanations on the causes and consequences of divorce, and so on. This book in deals the sociological commentaries, and is divided into chapters according to the respective fields. The book deals with contemporary phenomena of Kosovo (modem) society by comparing it with other societies. Each comment addressed in this script has a special meaning in Kosovo s transition developments timeline. Opinions, analyzes, and some of the papers with the help of scientific citations have been published in many Kosovo daily newspapers, magazines and various portals from the period 2008 to 2017. We have selected articles that dealt with major issues of social life during this period, so that the readers can compare their own views with our views on post-war developments in Kosovo. Then, these issued were
analyzed and processed through additional resources that have given a wider spectrum of colors to this book. These writings, I would like you to see them as pieces of thesis or 346
hypotheses, which would be confirmed by new researches on the ground by other scholars of social sciences. The book is divided into 5 (five) chapters. The first chapter (1) speaks about the relation between the individual, the family, and the society, which includes such topics as humans kind humanity in (post)modernity, modesty and arrogance, the phenomenon of sexual harassment in the contemporary society, early marriages in Kosovo’s society, marriage relationships comparison between marriages in traditional and modem times, the role and structural changes within Albanian families, as well as the phenomenon of divorce in our society. The second chapter (2) speaks more about social phenomena and negative trends in society, including: the phenomenon of poverty in Kosovo, abuse of narcotic substances as a social problem, the suicide its causes and consequences, then delinquency of minor children in Kosovo. In this chapter are included also essays about: ignorance of domestic violence and its handling, the complexity of lack of knowledge and ignorance as an obstacle to intellectual development, reflection over the celebrations as result of cultural globalization after 1999 in Kosovo, such is the Halloween then reflection on the music kitsch, hedonism, symbolism and metaphor of the “bird” and “treleches cake” as Freudian post-suppression, as well as the treatment of celebration of holidays and their manifestation in Kosovo society. The third chapter (3) focuses on the treatment of essays on communication, culture and the virtual environment, which includes topics such as: the
role of virtual communication in Kosovo society, reflection on virtual networks, the relationship between newspapers and online portals the consequences of information technology and analysis on usage of Internet and social media. Other essays included in this book are: the culture of communication in media discourses and our social reality, as well as analysis of 347
DILEMAT E TRANZICIONIT the literacy culture in Kosovo, elaborating here an empirical research that we have accomplished precisely for this purpose. Fourth chapter (4) focuses on democracy, human rights, politics and power, sociological analysis of how we understand democracy, politics, and power. Also, this chapter contains essays: the role of civil society in Kosovo s democracy, women s participation in the decision-making process in Kosovo society, reflections on Kosovo, globalization in European integration processes, analysis of myths as part of collective memory analysis of Albanians, analysis of conflict of Macedonian’s identity and the right of Macedonia s on historical heritage, and analysis of the phenomenon of racism, prejudice, social, cultural and ethnical stigmatization as global and local challenge. The fifth and the last chapter of this book deal with a very sensitive phenomenon nowadays, so it is about the correlation between religion, secularism and religious fundamentalism and also about relation between Islam as a religion and democracy as a political system. In this chapter we can find essays, such as: the relationship between religion and secularism in the Kosovo context, the relationship between Islam and democracy, and the relationship between Islam and terrorism. The other essays included in this chapter are: the issue of religion as a public or private matter and the process of religious conversions, religion between dogmatism and liberalism, social changes and religious diversity in Kosovo, and the essay about the relationship between religion and
conflict, highlighting a phenomenon that has manifested major problems and consequences for society. And finally, in this book we have included the literature /bibliography used during the elaboration of the book in question. 348
