Zusammenfassung: | "This book is about the ongoing conflict between humanity and the natural environment. Over the past 200,000 years, humans have multiplied and populated the Earth. When they domesticated plants and animals and replaced foraging with agriculture and herding, they depleted natural resources, deforested the land, and caused mass extinctions. But nature has agency too, causing pandemics of plague, smallpox, measles, influenza, and other diseases and a climate change called the Little Ice Age. In recent centuries, industrialization has accelerated extinctions, deforestation, and resource depletion, even in the oceans. Twentieth-century developmentalism and mass consumerism have caused global warming and other climate changes. Environmental movements have argued for the need to mitigate the negative consequences of technological and economic change. The future of humanity and the Earth depends on choices between achieving a sustainable balance between humans and nature, carrying on as before, or learning to manage the biosphere. environment, mass extinction, domestication, agriculture, pandemic, industrialization, developmentalism, consumerism, global warming"-- |

INCE THEIR APPEARANCE ON THE PLANET, HUMAN BEINGS S have sought to extract as many resources from the environment as their ingenu ity has allowed, with ever greater impact. Humans versus Nature tells a history of the globai environment from the Stone Age to the present, emphasizing the adversarial relationship between the human and natural worlds. Daniel R. Headrick shows how environmental changes—epidemics, climate shocks, and volcanic eruptions—have molded, and sometimes overwhelmed, human societies. At the same time, he traces the history of anthropogenic changes in the environment—species extinctions, glob al warming, deforestation, and resource depletion—back to the age of hunters and gatherers and the first farmers and herders. He details how some human interven tions have harmed the very societies that initiated them. Demonstrating how humandriven environmental changes have dramatically reshaped complex global systems, Humans versus Nature roots the current environmental crisis in the deep past.

The future of humanity and the Earth depends on choices between achieving a sustainable balance between humans and nature, carrying on as before, or learning to manage the biosphere. environment, mass extinction, domestication, agriculture, pandemic, industrialization, developmentalism, consumerism, global warming"-- Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Landschaftszerstörung (DE-588)4166649-5 gnd rswk-swf Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 gnd rswk-swf Anthropogene Klimaänderung (DE-588)4290733-0 gnd rswk-swf Zivilisation (DE-588)4067906-8 gnd rswk-swf Umwelt (DE-588)4061616-2 gnd rswk-swf Mensch (DE-588)4038639-9 gnd rswk-swf Natur (DE-588)4041358-5 gnd rswk-swf Nature / Effect of human beings on Global environmental change / History Global environmental change History Natur, Umwelt, Ökologie (DE-2581)TH000006202 gbd Umweltschutz (DE-2581)TH000006375 gbd Umwelt (DE-588)4061616-2 s Landschaftszerstörung (DE-588)4166649-5 s Anthropogene Klimaänderung (DE-588)4290733-0 s Geschichte z DE-604 Mensch (DE-588)4038639-9 s Zivilisation (DE-588)4067906-8 s Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 s Natur (DE-588)4041358-5 s Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, PDF 9780190864736 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, EPUB 9780190864743 Digitalisierung Deutsches Museum application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=031830171&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=031830171&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
