Zusammenfassung: | This book is an interdisciplinary collaboration between a literary critic and cultural historian, which examines and recovers a radical and still urgent challenge to the industrialisation of cultural tourism from the work of John Ruskin. Ruskin exerted a formative influence on the definition and development of cultural tourism which was probably as significant as that, for example, of his contemporary Thomas Cook. The book assesses Ruskin’s overall influence on the development of national and international tourism in the context of pre-existing expectations about tourism flows and cultural capital and alongside parallel and intersecting trends of the time; examines Ruskin’s contribution to the tourist agenda at all social levels; and discusses Ruskin’s significance for current debates in tourism studies, especially questions of the place of the ‘canon’ of traditional European cultural tourism in a post-modern tourist setting, and the various incarnations of ‘heritage tourism’ |

Dez 2019) This book is an interdisciplinary collaboration between a literary critic and cultural historian, which examines and recovers a radical and still urgent challenge to the industrialisation of cultural tourism from the work of John Ruskin. Ruskin exerted a formative influence on the definition and development of cultural tourism which was probably as significant as that, for example, of his contemporary Thomas Cook. The book assesses Ruskin’s overall influence on the development of national and international tourism in the context of pre-existing expectations about tourism flows and cultural capital and alongside parallel and intersecting trends of the time; examines Ruskin’s contribution to the tourist agenda at all social levels; and discusses Ruskin’s significance for current debates in tourism studies, especially questions of the place of the ‘canon’ of traditional European cultural tourism in a post-modern tourist setting, and the various incarnations of ‘heritage tourism’ In English Ruskin, John 1819-1900 (DE-588)118604279 gnd rswk-swf Grand Tour John Ruskin Thomas Cook cultural tourism development of cultural tourism heritage tourism tourist gaze BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Industries / Hospitality, Travel & Tourism bisacsh Heritage tourism Europe, Western History Heritage tourism Great Britain History Travel in literature Einfluss (DE-588)4151276-5 gnd rswk-swf Bildungstourismus (DE-588)4399758-2 gnd rswk-swf Ruskin, John 1819-1900 (DE-588)118604279 p Bildungstourismus (DE-588)4399758-2 s Einfluss (DE-588)4151276-5 s 1\p DE-604 Walton, John K. aut Tourism and Cultural Change 25 (DE-604)BV047815297 25 https://doi.org/10.21832/9781845411565 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
