RUMORS IN MEDIEVAL BULGARIA Peter Angelov (Summary) Historical sources allow us to make a kind of typological characterization of spread of rumors in Medieval Bulgaria. This is possible because sooner or later most of them, distrib uted originally "from mouth to mouth”, are fixed in writing and fall under the different kinds of literature works - chronicles, apocrypha, biographies of saints, etc. This ensures undoubt edly long life of rumors through the centuries. Some of them transformed into a lasting tradition and became an integral part of various legendary stories with clear and moralizing end. For the nature of rumors and their place in everyday life of the medieval Bulgarian a researcher had to rely almost entirely on foreign sources - most of them of Byzantine ori gin. Typical for these is inevitable tendency in assessments of barbaric world and uncritical blending of reality with fiction. Sometimes high importance was given to the rumors about the outcome of a military conflict. This is particularly noticeable, when the victory of the Bulgarians has to be presented mostly as a result of accidental factors and not as an expression of proven superiority. In this we are persuaded through analysis of the circumstances surrounding the battles at Ongala 680, Versinikia 813, Aheloy 917 and Trajan's Gate 986. The similar moments in the stories about the development of these battles show that the Byzantine authors have given particular impor tance to the various rumors arising during wars. They usually turn out to be decisive for the final outcome of a battle. Most
common are the following circumstances that triggered one or another rumor: a sudden withdrawal of a senior military commander from the battlefield or his demise; a miraculous 177
appearance of an emblematic personality (a biblical charac ter, a saint, a famous emperor of the past); death of a ruler, an attempt for overthrowing and usurpation of the throne; anxiety caused by passing through rugged terrain or fear of different natural phenomena (storms, rain, passing comet and others). Our observations suggest that rumors usually occur when you anxiously awaite some desired or undesired event that is likely to happen. Sometimes they were born as a result of something that has already happened, the dimensions and consequences of which are of crucial importance to people’s lives. The appearance of rumors usually happens in two ways. The first one was spontaneous, uncontrolled, and often oc curred in unclear and accidental circumstances. The second one was to consciously compose and spread rumors depend ing on the intended purpose, deliberately extended and di rected in time and space. In this respect, the Christian Church has a special role to play. In order to establish the cult of a saint, authors were not disturbed to compose different stories of his exploits and miracles, which as a rumor spread among the believers. In other words rumors have been successfully used for the purposes of religious propaganda. Of particular importance were the rumors about dramatic changes in state governance. Most of them concerned the fate of the Bulgar ian rulers. Their various actions have often become part of stories in which an important role was played by accidental and sometimes even purposeful rumors. The inauguration of a ruler, his reigning, and the end
of his earthly path are often accompanied by various events where reality intertwines in a particular way with impressive ominities and supernatural events. The idea that sometimes his actions follow a mystical destiny is promoted - if he does good deeds, he will eventu ally be rewarded by God, but if he has sinned, fair retribution definitely will overtake him. 178
In general, the secular and religious authorities have been well aware of the importance of rumors for guiding human be havior in the Middle Ages. And this, again convinces us that the phenomena of this age must be studied carefully and in view of the present. Only in this way would we better under stand why in our information age, rumors continue to play an extremely important role both in manipulating public aware ness and in mobilizing people’s energy in a certain direction. We will hardly find a sane man who can deny that to this day rumors (as we usually label them with the term "fake news”) continue to be used to influence politics, economics, trade and finance of states. 179 |
