adam_text | Contents Preface to the Fourth Edition 1 The Relationship between Philosophy and Science xiii I This chapter is devoted to explaining and motivating topics central to the philosophy of science and the book’s approach to these topics. The chapter concludes with an overview of what lies ahead. Overview What Is Philosophy? Philosophy and the Emergence of the Sciences Science and the Divisions of Philosophy What If There Are No Questions Left Over when Science Is Finished? A Short History of Philosophy as the Philosophy of Science Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 2 Why Is Philosophy of Science Important? I 2 3 5 6 8 18 18 19 20 The differences between scientific questions and philosophical questions about science are explored. Science is an epistemic phenomenon with deep implications for philosophy, but philosophy can also he/p us to explore the epistemic and cultural aspects of science. Overview Scientific Questions and Questions about Science Modern Science Has Implications for Philosophy The Cultural Significance of Science Why Is Science the Only Feature of Western Culture Universally Adopted? Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 20 20 23 29 31 33 34 34
Contents 3 Scientific Explanation 36 Explanation is the backbone of science. This chapter explores whether the discovery of scientific laws is essential for this, or whether there are other (better) ways of understanding scientific explanation. Overview Defining Scientific Explanation The Role of Laws in Scientific Explanation The Covering Law Model Problems for the Covering Law Model A Competing Conception of Scientific Explanation Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 4 Why Do Laws Explain? 36 37 39 41 44 49 S3 54 54 56 /flaws are an essential feature of scientific explanation, what are they? This chapter explores the suengths and weaknesses of various accounts, involving the notions of necessity and counterfactual conditionals. Overview What Is a Law of Nature? Counterfactual Support as a Symptom of the Necessity of Laws Counterfactuals and Causation Coming to Grips with Nornic Necessity Denying the Obvious? Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 5 Causation, Inexact Laws, and Statistical Probabilities 56 57 58 60 61 68 71 72 72 74 The question of how to come to terms with the notion of causation is central to this chapter. Can a probabilistidstatistical account help us to understand how it might be that there could be scientific laws based on something less than certainty? Overview Causes as Explainers Ceteris Paribus Laws Statistical Laws and Probabilistic Causes Explanation as Unification Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 74 75 80 82 86 87 88 88
Contents 6 Laws and Explanations in Biology and the “Special Sciences ix 90 Scientific inquiry in biology and the social sciences presents a special challenge to the idea that explanations must involve laws. What aspects of explanation are necessary in the “special sciences 7 Overview Dissatisfaction with Causal Explanations Proprietary Laws in the “Special Sciences” Functional Laws and Biological Explanations Explaining Purposes or Explaining Them Away? From Intelligibility to Necessity Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 7 The Structure of Scientific Theories 90 91 93 95 99 100 103 104 105 106 The role of theories is a central topic in the philosophy of science. What are theories and how do they work? The example of Newtonian theory is explored here, and considered within Hempel’s hypothetico-deductive model. Overview How Do Theories Work? The Example of Newtonian Mechanics Theories as Explainers: The Hypothetico-Deductive Model The Philosophical Significance of Newtonian Mechanics and Theories Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 106 107 112 8 Epistemic and MetaphysicalIssues about Scientific Theories 125 118 123 123 124 The reduction of higher-level theories to more basic ones is a vexing issue for explanation. Can scientific explanations be given only in foundational terms? But what does this foundation consist of? This chapter also explores the problem of the ontological status of theoretical entities and its implications for the “realism/antirealism” debate in the philosophy of science. Overview Reduction, Replacement, and the Progress of Science The
Problem of Theoretical Terms Scientific Realism vs. Antirealism Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 125 126 133 140 147 148 149
x Contents 9 Theory Construction vs. Model Building 151 Semantic vs. syntactic approaches to the nature of theories are explored here, in comparison to a model-building approach. A case study of Darwin’s theory of natural sefectŕon is explored. Overview Theories and Models Semantic vs. Syntactic Approaches to Theories and Models A Case Study: Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection Models and Theories in Evolutionary Biology Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 10 Induction and Probability 151 152 156 159 162 166 167 167 169 The problem of induction is presented, along with a statistical and probabilistic analysis of possible ways to address induction. Does Bayes’theorem provide all the guidance we need in reasoning about evidence? Overview The Problem of Induction Statistics and Probability to the Rescue? How Much Can Bayes’ Theorem Really Help? Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 11 Confirmation, Falsification, Underdetermination 169 170 175 181 187 188 188 190 There are various problems and puzzles in theory confirmation that present a challenge to traditional models. One of the main worries has been the problem of underdetermination of theory by evidence, which threatens to undermine inductive, evidence-based models altogether. Overview Epistemological Problems of Hypothesis Testing Induction as a Pseudo-Problem: Popper’s Gambit Underdetermination Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 12 Challenges from the History of Science One important question in the philosophy of science is whether there is a rational basis to proceed from one theory to another. The
history of science sheds light on this question through the works of Kuhn and other prominent philosophers of science. 190 191 195 200 204 205 205 206
Contents Overview A Role for History in the Philosophy of Science? New Paradigms and Scientific Revolutions Are Scientific Research Programs Rational? Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 13 Naturalism in the Philosophy of Science xi 206 207 212 217 221 222 222 223 Naturalistic models purport to rescue the understanding of scientific explanatíons from earlier worries about induction, rationality, and underdetermination, by grounding philosophy of science within science itself. If the understanding of science is merely of a piece with science itself, might its justification rest on firmer ground? What are the costs? Overview Quine and the Surrender of First Philosophy Naturalism, Multiple Realizability, and Supervenience Naturalism’s Problem of Justification Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 14 The Contested Character of Science 223 223 228 234 235 236 236 237 One final challenge to the rationality and logic of science comes from critiques based on postmodernism, scientism, and sexism. Sociological issues about the practices of science provide a counterbalance to the traditional, logical understanding of scientific explanation as distinctive from other human activities. Overview Methodological Anarchism The “Strong Program” in the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge Postmodernism and the Science Wars Does the Sokal Hoax Prove Anything? Scientism, Sexism, and Significant Truths Summary Study Questions Suggested Readings 15 Science, Relativism, and Objectivity This book concludes with an exploration of relativism and Kuhn’s problem of the alleged
“incommensurability” of some scientific accounts with others. Is there a sense in which those who are working within different conceptual schemes are explaining different worlds? 237 238 240 244 247 249 254 254 255 256
xii Contents Overview 256 Relativism and Conceptual Schemes 256 Dealing with Incommensurability 259 Conclusion: The Very Idea of a Conceptual Scheme 263 Study Questions 265 Suggested Readings 265 Glossary Bibliography Index 266 274 282
Philosophy of Science Any serious student attempting to better understand the nature, methods, and justifica tion of science will value Alex Rosenberg and Lee McIntyre’s updated and substantially revised fourth edition of Philosophy of Science: A Contemporary Introduction. Weaving lucid explanations with clear analyses, the volume is a much-used, thematically oriented introduction to the field. The fourth edition has been thoroughly rewritten based on instructor and student feedback, to improve readability and accessibility, without sacrificing depth. It retains, however, all of the logically structured, extensive coverage of earlier editions, which a review in the journal Teaching Philosophy called “the industry standard” and “essential reading.” Key Features of the Fourth Edition: • • • • • Revised and rewritten for readability based on feedback from student and instructor surveys. Updated text on the problem of underdetermination, social science, and the realism/ antirealism debate. Improved continuity between chapters. Revised and updated Study Questions and annotated Suggested Readings at the end of each chapter. Updated Bibliography.
