Summary ч The period between the two World Wars is for many Czechs and Slovaks a symbol of democracy and economic and cultural prosperity that was interrupted by powers that were beyond the ability of the young state to control. Upon close examination, however, this idealistic view overlooks a number of problems that plagued the so-called First Republic, to say nothing of the time after Munich in 1938. The fractionalisation of politi cal life and the politicisation of nearly all areas of society, problems of nationalities, growing unemployment and associated economic and so cial inequality at a time of economic crisis, and the fear stemming from internal and external threats led to gradually increasing limitations on constitutional freedoms. Nevertheless, we can state that the legacy of this period for the future of our country was decisive. During those twenty years, Czechoslovakia proved that its society could in all respects rival mature democracies with much longer traditions. Culture was unquestionably one of the areas that flourished in the interwar period in Czechoslovakia, to such an extent that it equalled the achievements of the great European powers. Artistic trends and currents that dominated the Europe of the time found fertile ground in Czecho slovakia. Many Czech artists gained experience in the contemporary cul tural metropoles. The writings of Czech and foreign authors appeared in praiseworthy editions of their work. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Czechoslovakia of those days was literally a nation of readers and the printed word fascinated
all levels of society. This intense interest related not only to books, but also to the periodi cal press—newspapers and magazines. The variety and number in which such periodicals appeared in the interwar period cannot be compared to any other time in the existence of our society before or since. In terms
302 of the development of magazines and newspapers, the interwar period was a golden age. Anyone who wanted to excel and be seen in his or her area of endeavour had to have a presence in the newspapers and journals, whether as an object of their interest or as an author of their texts. It is no surprise then that many of the literati contributed to the peri odicals of that time, but so did artists, musicians, actors, sports figures, economists, sociologists, political scientists, lawyers, historians and, of course, politicians. As we stated above, interwar society was highly po liticised and the press was intimately associated with individual centres of political power. Political struggles werewaged not only in the govern ment and on the floor of parliament, but above all in the newspapers. Their pages were a field for jousting between opinions, influencing the electorate and attacking opposing political views. A special standing for journalists flowed from all this, and manyof them were politicians them selves or warriors for certain ideologies. This was true not only of edito rialists—the worldviews of journalists and their publications often found their way into their reporting. In short, the journalists of the time were much more advocates of certain schools of thought than the independ ent observers that to a great extent the media and those who work in it today consider themselves to be. From a contemporary point of view the diversity of the periodicals on offer is surprising. They tried to impose their particular visions on politics, the economy, various
cultural spheres and lifestyles. Many of them of course existed on the edge of economic survival, but on the other hand, many of them did very well for themselves as enterprises. The syn ergy among political parties, commercial trade, industry, and publishing led to the rise of several publishing companies that displayed many of the hallmarks of the modern press and that were the equal of any their counterparts in France and Germany. However, the media environment of the 1920s and 1930s did not belong exclusively to the print media, even though it was nearly entirely dominant. Films played a role in the field of entertainment and to a certain extent in spreading information, and after a tentative beginning, the radio began to flourish as well. The next chapter of this publication does not aim to present the me dia environment and the journalism of the First Republic in all its glory. It is not an overview. The ambition is to offer the reader an excursion into some selected corners of the world of the media in interwar Czechoslo vakia. To a certain extent, that selectivity results from the origin of this publication itself, which is connected to a conference devoted to the sub ject of interwar Czechoslovak journalism that took place on 24-25 April
303 2017, at the Institute of Communications Studies and Journalism of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University in Prague. The presenta tions at that conference opened up a number of interesting themes from those two decades of our country’s history and also gave impetus to the publishing of this book, which we now present to our readers. In light of the diversity of the subject matter, this book is divided into four parts, each of which represents an area of the varied media world of interwar Czechoslovakia. The first part is chiefly concerned with issues related to the print media. The opening study by Danuša Serafinová de scribes the connections between the Czech lands and Slovakia and gives rich detail on the media environment in Slovakia. Other contributions are dedicated to opinion journalism as an economic phenomenon (Jan Cebe points to the example of the Národní politika publishing house as a model of an economically successful news organisation of the time), and as a social phenomenon (Světlana Hlavčáková writes about Slovak periodicals aimed at a female readership, while Barbora Osvaldova fol lows the tracks left by women journalists in the pages of newspapers like Lidové noviny). The contribution by Karol Lovaš weighs the criticism of communism and the Soviet regime found in the Catholic press. The development of pictorial magazines and the rise of photojournalism is discussed in detail by Alena Lábová. This part of the book is concluded by a study by Petr Orság of the continuity that the exile press consciously maintained with its First Republic
progenitors. The second part of this book concentrates exclusively on cultural magazines. Jana Čeňkova has chosen for her contribution to present the case of the magazine Rozpravy Aventina (1925-34), which was an initiative of Otakar Štorch-Marien, the founder of the famous First Republic pub lishing house Aventinum. Thematically, the contribution by Jan Halada, which is about the house magazine produced by the cultural Družstevní práce (DP) organisation. That magazine assumed a leading role in the cultural life of the First Republic due to its criticism and other writings that covered literature, theatre, the creative arts, architecture, film and photography. Jaroslav Slanec provides a uniquelook at the production of cultural magazines, offering Host magazine as an example of how the emphasis on graphic illustration as well as the written word increased during the time period under study. The third part of the book is devoted to sportswriting. It contains a comparison of the development of this branch of journalism (in which Peter Sasák shows how political issues insinuated themselves into sports reporting in the Slovak press) with what transpired in the rising medium
304 of radio (in an overview of the development and particularities of the contemporary journalism of sports on the radio, prepared by Marta Chladová). The fourth and final part concerns the varied mix of themes in the audio-visualproductions of the interwar period. Martin Stoll documents the birth of the Czech school of documentary films, which understood film first and foremost as a challenge to the events and problems of the day. Martin Lokšík also takes on documentary films as his theme and presents Czechoslovak newsreel journalism as a peculiar and successful journalistic genre of the time. Another unique form of reporting and edi torialising is the subject of Josef Marsiks contribution on the radio pro gram Okénko. All these stories about the media and journalists of the First Republic are symbolically rounded out by a contribution from Madgalena Prajerová, who illuminates the image of journalists and the media that was presented in films produced in interwar Czechoslovakia, as it was interpreted by filmmakers and, to a certain extent, society at large.
