GRAFFITI IN FOLKLORE Summary Folklore is continually created and as such follows our lives in continuity, from the past to the present. Being a ref lection of the spirit world of humans, folklore is where people are, at work, in the village, street, city, and in the internet. Since folklore includes a range of expressions of the culture and tradition of folklòric groups, it is manifested in different forms of communication, not just oral, but also through writing. The well-known scholar Aland Dundės has come to the conclusion that only oral transmission is not enough to distinguish folklore from non-folklore. There are a number of traditional forms that have always circulated in written or printed forms. These include autographs in books, chain letters, inscriptions on the stone, graffiti, and sung or printed ballads. Over the last decades, people have begun to systematically investigate the location and content of graffiti. Mainly this concerns the study of two types of inscriptions street graffiti and graffiti found on the walls of public bath rooms - called latrinalia. Digital technology has further ex panded the field, opening up an additional space for cultural expression. From their humorous, wise, implausible, vulgar, po tentially hostile, intolerant ideas and alternative ideas, graffiti
156 Ylberza HALILI as part of folklore and urban communication are symbols of a subculture. We consider the sub-cultural dimension of gra ffiti to be particularly important, given that the main aim of these urban messages is to influence different social groups, possibly bringing about certain changes in the field of culture. For example, this process is visible in motto, messa ges, slogans and graffiti written during political ralhes in Kosova. All of these writings are short sentences or phrases, but differ from what they express. Graffiti as written, anonymous, short, and often tradi tional comments, placed on public wafts and other flat sur faces, have long communicated with the public. Graffiti is also considered as art of tagging . Tagging is a part of not only hip-hop culture but also of urban culture, as well as represents the perspective of a person or per spective of young people, which older generations have been afraid to say it. Graffiti is written by anonymous writers, mostly in urban areas and with a short and meaningful ex pression. Since graffiti is an accurate indicator of the social attitudes of a community or group, they can be classified as folklore. But what are the reasons? Different scholars highlight the elements that form fol klore, and they are: folk-group, tradition, variations, the mea ning of a folkloric unit, folklore broadcast, and anonymity. While the elements that link graffiti to folklore are: graffiti is a kind of popular speech in writing form, because of its poetic and narrative characteristics. Regardless of the classification
as a genre, graffiti is undoubtedly traditional, with an origin that goes deep in history. Another element is the anonymity of those who write grafitti, which puts graffiti in the folklore competences. Graffiti is associated with particular folk groups, ranging from frequent participants of
GRAFITÉT NE FOLKLOR 157 university buildings to deviant social groups, such as gangs of different ethnic groups. Graffiti is a good example of folklore because it is usually anonymous and explicative of the opinion of an individual or a group of persons. The affinity of folklore and of graffiti artists today also stand in the act of performing of graffiti. They are also considered as folk art, because they differ from fine art because the folk artists do not have formal training in art school, but they learn and practice their skills within their folk group, as is the case with graffiti groups. To prove the relevance of graffiti with folklore, some scholars have collected phrases from the walls in general to reveal the spread of folk humor, and folk speech in the form of traditional words and word games. Graffiti is a product of people and part of the collective memory, so these works should be treated in the framework of folklore. Graffiti in the Albanian world represents its history and tradition of development, transformation, and typical communication practices between social groups or residents of that city. The graffiti situation in Kosova and Albania is such that political graffiti prevails, but there are also those of the reaction type, with urban, cultural and social dimensions. Although by some people it is seen as art, and by some as vandalism, graffiti is a kind of written folk speech expre ssed by anonymous people. They usually have daily content, political affairs and social issues. Graffiti is a very important form of popular communication that though often
being illegal, continues to flourish in different parts of the world, including also Kosova and Albania.
