Zusammenfassung: | In The Lay Saint, Mary Harvey Doyno investigates the phenomenon of saintly cults that formed around pious merchants, artisans, midwives, domestic servants, and others in the medieval communes of northern and central Italy. Drawing on a wide array of sources—vitae documenting their saintly lives and legends, miracle books, religious art, and communal records—Doyno uses the rise of and tensions surrounding these civic cults to explore medieval notions of lay religiosity, charismatic power, civic identity, and the church's authority in this period.Although claims about laymen's and laywomen's miraculous abilities challenged the church's expanding political and spiritual dominion, both papal and civic authorities, Doyno finds, vigorously promoted their cults. She shows that this support was neither a simple reflection of the extraordinary lay religious zeal that marked late medieval urban life nor of the Church's recognition of that enthusiasm. Rather, the history of lay saints' cults powerfully illustrates the extent to which lay Christians embraced the vita apostolic—the ideal way of life as modeled by the Apostles—and of the church's efforts to restrain and manage such claims |

Okt 2019) In The Lay Saint, Mary Harvey Doyno investigates the phenomenon of saintly cults that formed around pious merchants, artisans, midwives, domestic servants, and others in the medieval communes of northern and central Italy. Rather, the history of lay saints' cults powerfully illustrates the extent to which lay Christians embraced the vita apostolic—the ideal way of life as modeled by the Apostles—and of the church's efforts to restrain and manage such claims In English Zita Heilige 1212-1272 (DE-588)120202093 gnd rswk-swf Margherita da Cortona 1247-1297 (DE-588)118730975 gnd rswk-swf Petrus von Siena 1200-1289 (DE-588)132802929 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1150-1350 gnd rswk-swf Religious Studies Womens Studies charity, gender, history of Christianity, European history, cults HISTORY / Medieval bisacsh Wohltätigkeit (DE-588)4190155-1 gnd rswk-swf Heiliger (DE-588)4024055-1 gnd rswk-swf Laie (DE-588)4034117-3 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Heiliger (DE-588)4024055-1 s Laie (DE-588)4034117-3 s Wohltätigkeit (DE-588)4190155-1 s Geschichte 1150-1350 z 1\p DE-604 Petrus von Siena 1200-1289 (DE-588)132802929 p 2\p DE-604 Margherita da Cortona 1247-1297 (DE-588)118730975 p 3\p DE-604 Zita Heilige 1212-1272 (DE-588)120202093 p 4\p DE-604 https://doi.org/10.7591/9781501740213 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
