Zusammenfassung: | "On July 31, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Maddox (DD-731) began a reconnaissance cruise off the coast of North Vietnam. On August 2, three North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked the ship. On the night of August 4, the Maddox and another destroyer, the USS Turner Joy (DD-951), expecting to be attacked, saw what they interpreted as hostile torpedo boats on their radars and reported themselves under attack. The following day, the United States bombed North Vietnam in retaliation. Congress promptly passed, almost unanimously and with little debate, a resolution granting President Lyndon Johnson authority to take "all necessary measures" to deal with aggression in Vietnam. The incident of August 4, 1964, is at the heart of this book. The author interviewed numerous Americans who were present. Most believed in the moment that an attack was occurring. By the time they were interviewed, there were more doubters than believers, but the ones who still believed were more confident in their opinions. Factoring in degree of assurance, one could say that the witnesses were split right down the middle on this fundamental question. A careful and rigorous examination of the other forms of evidence, including intercepted North Vietnamese naval communications, interrogations of North Vietnamese torpedo boat personnel captured later in the war, and the destroyers' detailed records of the location and duration of radar contacts, lead the author to conclude that no attack occurred that night." -- |

Moïse Revised edition Annapolis, Maryland Naval Institute Press [2019] © 2019 xxiii, 362 Seiten Illustrationen txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier "On July 31, the U.S. A careful and rigorous examination of the other forms of evidence, including intercepted North Vietnamese naval communications, interrogations of North Vietnamese torpedo boat personnel captured later in the war, and the destroyers' detailed records of the location and duration of radar contacts, lead the author to conclude that no attack occurred that night." -- Geschichte 1964 gnd rswk-swf Zwischenfall (DE-588)4348652-6 gnd rswk-swf Eskalation (DE-588)4153029-9 gnd rswk-swf Vietnamkrieg (DE-588)4063516-8 gnd rswk-swf Militärpolitik (DE-588)4065004-2 gnd rswk-swf Bắc-Bộ (DE-588)4212911-4 gnd rswk-swf Golf von Tonkin (DE-588)4580145-9 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Tonkin Gulf Incidents, 1964 Vietnam War, 1961-1975 HISTORY / Military / Vietnam War HISTORY / Military / United States Tonkin Gulf Incidents (1964) Vietnam War (1961-1975) 1961-1975 Golf von Tonkin (DE-588)4580145-9 g Vietnamkrieg (DE-588)4063516-8 s Geschichte 1964 z DE-604 Bắc-Bộ (DE-588)4212911-4 g Zwischenfall (DE-588)4348652-6 s Eskalation (DE-588)4153029-9 s 1\p DE-604 USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Militärpolitik (DE-588)4065004-2 s 2\p DE-604 3\p DE-604 Online version Moïse, Edwin E., 1946- author Tonkin Gulf and the escalation of the Vietnam War Revised edition Annapolis, MD : Naval Institute Press, 2019 9781682474488 Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=031610140&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
