SUMMARIES Ludmila Romanenko THE MOSCOW OF SERGEY TROYNITSKY The article gives an overview of Sergey Troynitsky’s Moscow period following his return from the Ufa exile in 1939 right until his death in 1948. Extracts from his letters to Alexandra Khokhlova, from the wartime years of 1941 and 1942, are published for the first time. Along with the recollec tions of his contemporaries, who studied under his supervision at the Moscow Art Theatre School, and accounts of the Kuskovo Estate Museum’s staff, they shed light on new facts from the life of the Hermitage’s first Soviet-time director. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Sergey Beletsky A BIDENT FROM THE BODZIA BURIAL GROUND (POLAND) Excavations of a burial ground near the village of Bodzia (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland), grave E-864/I, uncovered a belt set. One of the sides of the belt tip bears a representation of the so-called symbol of the Rurikids, an old Russian princely coat of arms. An analysis of its prop erties dated the set to Sviatopolk Yaropolchich’s reign as the Prince of Turov (1008—1013). The young warrior buried in grave E-864/I could have possibly been the sword-bearer of Prince Sviatopolk Transkted by Ksenia Beletskaya Evgeny Pchelov RUSSIAN COATS OF ARMS FROM THE FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE The walls of the chapel and staircases in the Frederiksborg Castie in Denmark are decorated with the coats of arms of several knights of the Danish Orders of the Elephant and Dannebrog. The au thor discovered among them thirty coats of arms of Russian knights. Their comparison with other coats of arms from the
armorials of Denmark and the Russian Empire revealed a number of dif ferences in various elements and details. Some of them can be explained formally while others high light variation and even some evolution of the coats of arms. As the analysis of the Frederiksborg Casde’s armorial shows such artefacts are of utter importance for Russian heraldry studies. Transkted by Ksenia Beletskaya Pyotr Golovnin A MASONIC AXE FROM 1733 It has already been for three hundred years that the Golovnin family has kept a relic — a rit ual Masonic axe with crossed hammers, year 1733 and letters J.G.F.P. on the helve and a coat of arms on the other side. Letters J.G.F.P. stand for the Latin phrase ‘Judaicus Genesis Fabricator 257
SUMMARIES Paracletus’, ճէ. ‘the Jewish Origin of the Creator Protector’. In 1733 Masonic lodges were set up in Hamburg, Florence and Boston. The Golovnins took possession of this axe thanks to Nikolay Golovnin, ‘who was made the Knight of the Order of Malta in 1793’. On 1 February 1733 Augustus II the Strong (1670-1733) passed away, and the Russian party was supported by the Prince of Wiśniowiec, whose Trzaska coat of arms also belongs to the Lubiejewski family. The author’s great-great-grandmother, Elena Lubiejewski (1834—1904), Smolyaninova in marriage, also has the right to use it. Among the prominent freemasons was Prince Alexander Kurakin (1752—1818), Chancellor of the Russian Orders, whose great-greatgranddaughter Maria Kalinina (b. 1971) won the first beauty contest in Moscow in 1988. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Elena Yarovaya A FOLDING SCREEN WITH THE VONLJARLJARSKY AND MUSIN-PUSHKIN COATS OF ARMS The article is concerned with a three-panel silk-covered screen showing two coats of arms and a Latin monogram. When identified, the coats of arms revealed a link to a marriage relation be tween the noble families deeply rooted in the St Petersburg beau monde: they were a coat of arms of the untided branch of the House of Musin-Pushkin on the left and of the Vonljarljarsky family on the right. The monogram in the centre denotes the husband’s surname. The history of these two houses knows only one case of marriage between their members. On 6 June 1845 Mikhail Vonljarljarsky, aged twenty-nine, was joined in marriage with Vera Musina-Pushkina, aged eigh teen. Service
records uncovered in the Russian State Historical Archive provide new insights into the history of the family that once owned the screen. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Elena Anisimova, Roksana Rebrova HERALDIC AND ARTISTIC ATTRIBUTION OF A GROUP OF EXHIBITS OWNED BY POLISH KINGS The article presents a heraldic and artistic analysis as well as attribution of the items all of which are decorated with combined coats of arms of the Kingdom of Poland and the Electorate of Saxony and were possibly in the private possession of the Polish kings Augustus II the Strong and his son Augustus III. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Vyacheslav Savelyev THE GUEST BOOK OF THE ANDREAPOL MINERAL SPAS (1810-1845) AS A SOURCE ON PRIVATE HERALDRY The article looks into a group of impressions of private heraldic seals left in the guest book by the visitors of the Andreapol mineral spas, a resort open on Brigadier General S. Kushelev’s estate, Ostashkov Uyezd, Tver Province, from 1810 to 1845. The author presents to the academic community a selection of artefacts illustrative of creative heraldic thinking and examines their use strategies in the nobility’s everyday life. SUMMARIES Valeria Nezgovorova MILITARY DRAWINGS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE LIFE GUARDS SAPPER BATTALION MUSEUM The Life Guards Sapper Battalion Museum has accumulated a collection of lithographs and prints produced by large publishing houses as well as a considerable number of copies and original drawings executed by professional artists specialising in the history of the guards sapper uniforms over a century. The museum’s collection work was pioneered and organised by a prominent military historian Georgy Gabaev. The article reviews the history of the holdings with a focus on the draw ings showing the guards sapper uniforms of 1812—1825. Transhted by Ksenia Beletskaya Daria Ryzhova PROTOHERALDIC TERMINOLOGY IN CHRÉTIEN DE TROYES’S NOVELS: TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION CHALLENGES Despite the wide spread of heraldry, the concepts of ‘coat of arms’ and ‘heraldry’ were not yet ultimately defined or expressed in a single explicit term in the late twelfth century. It was during that period, however, that the words that were later deeply embedded in French heraldic vocabu lary finally received their heraldic meaning, which is proved by the French literature of the late twelfth century. The polysemy of such terms gready hinders correct interpretation and translation of the texts. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Dmitry Kopelev ‘THE BATTLE OF THE PORTULAN CHARTS’: HERALDIC EMBLEMS IN THE NEW WORLD’S MAPS AND THE TORDESILLAS SYSTEM The author addresses heraldic and vexillological symbols to analyse the global geopolitical stage in the first half of the sixteenth century. The study
revolves around the episodes relating to the confrontation of two principles practised by the European military and maritime powers in the Age of Discovery: the principle of monopolistic division of the world and the principle of freedom of the seas. The conflict between these geopolitical programmes also infiltrated into the area of symbolism, taking the shape of cartographic antagonism. The Old World’s symbolic claims to get hold of new continents and surrounding seas were illustrated by heraldic and vexil lological ‘markers’ and European place names that were scattered across the discovered coastlines. The author believes that geographical names, escutcheons, flags, personified objects and various allusions served as a sort of symbols, signs or marks of dominion of different states that strove to stake a claim to the new lands. SUMMARIES The study continues a series of tesearch papers concerned with royal coronations in the sec ond half of the sixteenth century and attempts to compare coronation protocols of both states and heraldic symbols found in medals. Heraldic elements in the coronation medals can give a new insight into the political, dynastic and religious context of England and France in the second half of the sixteenth century. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Polina Ukhanova SYMBOLIC IMAGES IN THE WORKS OF COCO CHANEL This study aims to trace the use of heraldic symbols in the works of the world-famous French couturière Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel and highlight a common understanding of some symbols in the Middle Ages and in the fashion trends of the first half of the twentieth century. The author underscores similarities in the meanings of a lion symbol and black colour in the thirteenth — nine teenth centuries and in the fashion of the first half of the twentieth century, exploring fashionable twentieth-century novelties through the lens of Western semiotic tradition. Translated by Ksenia Beletshya Alexander Tchemik THE OFFICE FOR MUNICIPAL HERALDRY (GABINETE DE HERÁLDICA AUTÁRQUICA) AND ITS ACTIVITIES AT THE TURN OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY The Office for Municipal Heraldry has functioned as an expert authority registering municipal armorial bearings since 1921. The Law of 7 August 1991 On Heraldry of Settlements and Public Administrative Units’ deals with the heraldry of Portugal’s lowest administrative units, granting them their own coat of arms, flag and seal. Any attempts to force
a local coat of arms out of the sociocultural environment to replace it with some bland trademark tend to destroy the historical links it embodies. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Ilya Emelin UNKNOWN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY COATS OF ARMS OF OKHOTSK AND PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKI The article is centred around the unknown eighteenth-century coats of arms of Okhotsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. They were finally discovered due to a broader range of historical re cords compared to previous historiography. The article also puts a spotlight on the previously unknown coats of arms of other Siberian and Far Eastern cities and fortresses. SUMMARIES Dmitry Lobanov THE RURIK FAMILY HERALDRY FROM THE DONSKOY MONASTERY NECROPOLIS The article offers a review of the Rurik heraldry found on the gravestones located in the out door part of the Donskoy Monastery necropolis in Moscow, with a focus on the coats of arms of the Chernigov princes’ descendants, whose tombs are largely extant. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Viktor Murzin-Gundorov EVOLUTION OF THE FAMILY COAT OF ARMS OF PRINCES MESHCHERSKY. CASE STUDY OF THREE FAMILY BRANCHES The study utilises visual evidence in order to trace the origins of the Meshchersky coats of arms. It also offers a comparative analysis of their different variations across the family tree branches and by chronology, highlighting their distinctive features and dates. The article attempts to justify the noticeable differences from the variant that won the official Supreme approval. An overview of the farmly tree sheds light on the background behind the evolution of the coats of arms from the personal ones to the officially approved variant, underpinned by the house’s unity. Translated by Ksenia Beletskaya Lidia Dobrovolskaya THE LEVASHOV SEALS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM’S NUMISMATICS DEPARTMENT The article is dedicated to the seals once owned by the Levashov family members and now kept at the State Hermitage Museum’s Numismatics Department. They made their way to the State Hermitage Museum in 1938 as part of the former Heraldic Museum’s holdings andin 1941 within Alexander Voytov’s (1893—1966) collection. Vasily Levashov (1783—1848) was the owner of a seal and a
jetton with the noble family’s coat of arms, a stamp for the jetton, a jetton and two sealing wax impressions with the comital coat of arms as well as an ex libris stamp with a comital coronet. The seal of the Department of Estates in Petrovskoe settle ment could have also been produced in his time. One of his sons, Nikolay (1827—1888) or VasДу Levashov (1834—1898), owned a steel seal without a handle, a seal for coloured impressions and a sealing wax impression of a seal with the comital coat of arms. The latter was also in possession of a stamp for paper with the VVL monogram under the comital coronet surrounded by a motto Virtuti et honori’. One more two-sided rock crystal seal, as suggested by the monogram, belonged to anoth er member of the Levashov noble fanúly Fyodor Stepanovich (1822—1899) or Fyodor Nikitich (1829—1896). Records from the State Hermitage Archives show that Vladislav Lukomsky selected some of the Levashovs’ seals for the Heraldic Museum. Then these objects became part of the Hermitage collection. SUMMARIES Tatiana Ilyina THE RUSSIAN ARMY PRIZE JETTONS FOR SUCCESS IN SPORTS AND HORSE-RIDING The article is devoted to the system of physical culture and sports training in the Russian Empire military schools and of professional training of the Russian cavalry officers and soldiers at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The water-colours of prize jettons for success in sports designed for the pupils of military schools and the water-colours of prize jettons for victories in the military district cavalry compe tition are published for the first time. PHENOMENON OF REVISUALISATION IN RUSSIAN HERALDRY Apart from demonstrating similar and stereotyped forms, heraldry is also rich in rare, unique and enigmatic forms which deserve particular attention and special techniques of research. One of them is the quest for a possible verbal aberration behind an unusual coat; this constitutes an heuristically promising task (especially, but by no means exclusively, in relation to Russian arms) as well as a perfect professional entertainment. The study encompasses regional and municipal coats of arms (owned by the republic capitals and several municipal districts). The author looks into the symbolic devices their creators made use of in order to showcase historical, natural, ethnic and cultural features of their lands. The analysis found some of the symbols to be highly recurrent in the heraldry of these regions. Among them are depictions of mountains (the hallmark of local landscape), a fortress or a turret (symbols of the warfare cul ture), figures of animals and birds (predominantly the eagle). A large multitude of unofficial coats of arms is indicative of a strong interest in heraldry among the local community. The author brings to light the corrupt iconography of the main symbol in the Soviet coat of arms, giving an overview of the full draft version including sup porters, designed by the heraldic artist Vadim Shipunov. The author also wishes that Cheboksary finally gained a legitimate official symbol by the one hundredth anniversary of Chuvash statehood in 2020.
