SUMMARY Formation of the Collection and its Cultural and Historical Importance Material documents, as a valuable testament of historical events, should be preserved from falling into oblivion, so that they could be presented to todays generations. One such important task is to com pile bibliographies of books published during the First World War. Since there is an enormously large number of books published dur ing the Great War in the Library of Faculty of Law of the University of Belgrade - about 4,000 publications, and since they are the firstclass historical testimony, I have selected the most important and in teresting books and made a collection. At the same time, I made this catalogue-bibliographic list of these books, to serve as an information supplement for the users. This bibliography contains primarily all pub lications of Serbian authors published in Serbian or foreign languages, as well as publications of foreign authors who wrote about Serbia and Serbs, a certain number of foreign books dealing with war events, as well as a smaller number of legal and other themes that reflect war book production in many countries of the world. I have also included official publications, various reports, laws, regulations, conferences and meetings, mainly dedicated to current events. The titles of 1919 related to war events, peace negotiations and the creation of the joint state of Yugoslavia were also selected. We will, at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade, present an exhibition of the most valuable and the most interesting books from this collec tion titled: Everythingfor
honor, honor for nothing, words from ex libris of Milenko R. Vesnić, former professor of Faculty of Law and former ambassador and president of the Council of Ministers, who in 1920, donated his personal library to the Law Faculty. Many books from this library form the basis of this newly-created collection. Another professor at the Faculty of Law, Grgur Jakšić, donated his personal library, that contains many significant and rare publications. 358 Books Published During the First World War in the Fund ofLibrary of the Faculty of Law Jaksie. The donor of valuable books was also professor Dura Popovič (signed as Georges D. Popovitch), as evidenced by his autographs or hand written notes in many books. The library’s ftind was significantly expended with publications belonging to the Library of the Faculty of Law in Subotica. The gifts of Carnegie Endowment, obtained through the University Library in Belgrade, are generally editions of the Foun dation. Other books were acquired by purchase, exchange, individual gifts, and some are the result of war reparations. Procedure of finding and selecting books was difficult and based on carefully examining the fund itself in the Library’s repositories. AO books were catalogued de visu by entering the data that I considered necessary for better and more comprehensive information about the publication. At the end of the catalogue records we provided notes about the work or the author, as weU as notes for each copy, such as dedication, ex libris, previous seals of ownership, gift stamp, auto graphs, hand written notes, marginalia, etc. The list of the books is supplemented by the register of authors that also contains short bio graphical data for all the authors, because many celebrities of that time are now forgotten. The collection contains 1,607 books or bibliographic items, and the author’s register includes 917 authors and co-authors. Books were published in: Serbian, French, English, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Dutch and Swedish language and the authors are of
Serbian, French, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, Belgian, Swiss, Bulgar ian, Romanian, Russian, Polish, Slovak, Czech, Spanish, Greek, Aus trian, Hungarian, Brazilian, Peruvian, Cuban, Armenian, Lithuanian, Lebanese, Albanian, Tunisian and Mexican writers. By countries of publication, the data indicate that the books were published in: Ser bia, France, Greece, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Great Brit ain, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Denmark, Russia and the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United States of America, Norway, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Egypt, Monaco, and Luxembourg. The books were published in numerous collections, mostly in Pages actuelles (Paris), Pages d’Histoires (Paris), Biblioteka Srpskog Glasnika (Thessaloniki), Biblioteka Prosvete (Geneva), Ratna kolekcija (Thessa loniki), Savremena pitanja (Niš), Jugoslovenska biblioteka Oslobođenje (Antofagasta, Chile), Invalidska biblioteka (Corfu), La Bibliothèque de la “Yougoslavie” (Paris), and Bibliothèque Slovène (Geneva). Who were the authors of the books selected for this war collection? Most often, they were contemporary writers who wrote during the war

They саше from very different professions, most of them were lawyers, but there were also economists, sociologists, politicians, physi cians, historians, geographers, cartographers, writers, journalists and publicists, philosophers, ethnologists, pedagogues and psychologists, officers, diplomats, ambassadors, statesmen, ministers, prime minis ters, presidents of states, biologists, engineers, architects, constructors, painters, philologists, literary and art critics, librarians. Many of them were university professors, academics, and several of them were Nobel Prize winners. So, most of the creators belonged to the intellectual, po litical and military elites of that time. According to available electronic sources, I have discovered that many of these books are not to be found in any other library in Serbia, and no library in the world stores these three titles: LOccupation de Guerre: avis, études, exposés juridiques, by belgian lawyer, Ernest Nys, university professor and judge of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, published in Brussels in 1919; Who Won the War? or Who Caused the Sudden Collapse of the Enemy? by an unknown author signed as G. E. Sklyros, published in London in 1919, and Vandalismus in der österreichischen Kriegführung nach authentischen Quellen und ei genen Erlebnissen zusammengestelit by Catharina Sturzenegger, Swiss publicist and member of the Swiss Red Cross, who was in Serbia as a war reporter and volunteer nurse. Thus, this newly formed collection contains an extremely large number of valuable and rare titles
published during the First World War, and is a significant cultural and historical testimony. By careful review of each bibliographic unit, users will find many important, in teresting, and even new facts. It should be noted that all books pub lished during the war have a special bibliographical value and are clas sified among the rare issues. I hope that the creation of this collection confirms my wishes and efforts to make this special book collection a credible and compre hensive treasure trove of books on the subject of Great War. The most valuable titles in this treasury are an authentic testimony of a small and patriotic people who, despite the most severe suffering and price less victims, won the victory and deservedly gained general respect and admiration. |
