Zusammenfassung: | Now that it has become so commonplace, we rarely blink an eye at camera footage framed by the crosshairs of a sniper’s gun or from the perspective of a descending smart bomb. But how did this weaponized gaze become the norm for depicting war, and how has it influenced public perceptions? Through the Crosshairs traces the genealogy of this weapon’s-eye view across a wide range of genres, including news reports, military public relations images, action movies, video games, and social media posts. As he tracks how gun-camera footage has spilled from the battlefield onto the screens of everyday civilian life, Roger Stahl exposes how this raw video is carefully curated and edited to promote identification with military weaponry, rather than with the targeted victims. He reveals how the weaponized gaze is not only a powerful propagandistic frame, but also a prime site of struggle over the representation of state violence |

Sep 2019) Now that it has become so commonplace, we rarely blink an eye at camera footage framed by the crosshairs of a sniper’s gun or from the perspective of a descending smart bomb. He reveals how the weaponized gaze is not only a powerful propagandistic frame, but also a prime site of struggle over the representation of state violence In English Fadenkreuz (DE-588)10333385-X gnd rswk-swf battle battlefield camera civilian drones film games gun camera gun-camera gun guns military news propaganda public relations scope sniper state surveillance surveillant television violence weapons HISTORY / General bisacsh Mass media and war United States Popular culture United States War and society United States War in mass media Scharfschütze (DE-588)4179403-5 gnd rswk-swf Kriegsberichterstattung (DE-588)4033120-9 gnd rswk-swf Visualisierung (DE-588)4188417-6 gnd rswk-swf Massenmedien (DE-588)4037877-9 gnd rswk-swf Massenmedien (DE-588)4037877-9 s Kriegsberichterstattung (DE-588)4033120-9 s Visualisierung (DE-588)4188417-6 s Scharfschütze (DE-588)4179403-5 s Fadenkreuz (DE-588)10333385-X b 1\p DE-604 https://www.degruyter.com/isbn/9780813585284 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
