Summary A contemporary of Justinian I (527-565 AD) Procopius of Caesarea located the land of Dory in the mountainous area between Cherson and Bosporos, on the same shore of the Pontos with the forts ofAloustou and in Gorzoubita. He considered that all the residents of Dory were Goths. Archaeological excavations in the area between the Inner Ridge and the Main Ridge of the Crimean mountains (from the Chernaia river estuary and Balaklava to the slopes of Demirdzhi and Chatyr-Dag mountains) and in the Southern Coast of the Crimea (in vicinity of Aloustou and on the southern slopes of the Main Ridge near Gurzuf, Yalta, Oreanda, and Simeiz) discovered the archaeological culture which existed from the age of Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great (470-526 AD) to the age of Justinian I of Byzantium. The complex analysis of the materials of many-year-long archaeological excavations in the area under analysis allows us to determine the date when the culture shaped, to trace its evolution, and to attribute the ethnicity of its people. Early cemeteries of this culture developed in the South-Western Crimea, in previously not populated area, in result of the migration of Germanic and Alanie tribes about the middle of the third century. In the inhumation cemeteries, they buried into T-shaped burial vaults and undercut graves typical of the Alans in Transcaucasia and the Azov Sea area. The Germans cremated their dead. The construction and the rituals used in the T-shaped burial vaults differed from the Scythian vaults known in the Crimea from the first to the first half of the third
century. This is why there is no reason to look for Scythian and the more so Taurian roots of the new population. About the middle of the fifth century, perhaps after the conversion to Christianity, the Germans ceased to bury their dead by cremation and started the ritual of inhumation in T-shaped burial vaults. In the age of Justinian I, the Goths in the land of Dory were the enspondoi (ενσπονδοι, the allies) of the Empire. In 576, the Turks took possession of Bosporos, and in 580 they menaced Cherson. In the late sixth century, responding the Turkic expansion into the Crimea, the Byzantines constructed for the Gothic and Alanie residents of the land of Dory the forts on the plateaus of Eski-Kermen, Bakla, and Chufiit-Kale. The building of new forts corresponded to epigraphical account of the reformation of the administrative system in Byzantine possessions in the Crimean peninsula. The text of fragmented inscription discovered near the southern defensive wall of Cherson informs that the reform started under Justin II (565-578) with the appointment of doux {dux) to Cherson as the commander of all Byzantine troops in the Crimea. V. V. Latyshev published inscription from Taman stating that in 590 AD stratelates and doux of Cherson constructed a “kaisar’s house” in Bosporos. This inscription testifies to the creation in the imperial possessions in the peninsula of united administration headed by the doux of Cherson. During this reform the Byzantines added to their possessions and subordinated to the doux of Cherson their allied land of Dory. Quite probably, the doux headed
the construction of new forts. The Dory was divided into regions, or archontiai, with their archontes residing in forts atop the plateaux of Mangup (Doros), Eski-Kermen, Chufiit-Kale, and Bakla. The archontes of these archontiai commanded local troops and headed Byzantine civil administration of their region. In the second half of the seventh century, the Byzantines called the archontiai of Dory the “Klimata of Cherson.” According to primary sources, as long as the late seventh century the parishes of Dory were subordinated to the bishop of Cherson, and in the second half of the eight century Doros was titled the centre of the Gothic eparchy and the fort of Gothia. In the early eighth century, the Khazars used their military advantage in the region to take possession of the Klimata of Cherson. Perhaps the khagan united the Klimata (iarchontiai) in the mountainous Crimea into the new “province” of Gothia with its capital in Doros to improve the collection of tributes. Plausibly the archon of the Klima of Doros was appointed the ruler of Gothia and entrusted with the tribute collections. As we have seen, the south-western Crimea with its Gothic and Alanie population in the sixth and seventh century was called Dory, and from the eighth century on, it was titled Gothia. 323
