Zusammenfassung: | Between 1834 and 1836, Harriet Martineau (a great feminist and one of the most brilliant minds of the nineteenth century) travelled throughout America to produce a a pioneering work of sociology, Society in America (1837). Because she was very deaf, she took with her a companion-cum-assistant whom she identified (in her Autobiography) as ‘Miss J’. Although Martineau described Miss J as 'remarkably clever, supremely rational, and with a faultless temper,' and admitted that she owed Society in America to her, no one has previously written about Miss J. Using previously unexploited sources, including new letters from Martineau, this monograph uncovers her life - and that of her daughter, Ellen McKee. Ellen's career was much influenced by Martineau's ideas and ideals: she became one of the first women to serve in local government. Along with her friend Mary Dendy, she also pioneered in the provision of facilities for physically imparied children |
