Summary The collective monograph entitled Rudolf Chmel s Central Europe (Střední Ev ropa Rudolfa Chmela) was compiled for the 8oth birthday of Rudolf Chmel, the founding personality of Slovak studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. The monograph consists of fourteen personal and celebratory contributions as well as contributions of a theoretical nature, focusing on themes of Central Europe. Rudolf Chmel, a leading expert in Slovak and Hungarian studies, is inextricably connected to the question of „What is Central Europe?“ on many levels of his professional life, not only as a col league, pedagogue, literary theorist and journalist but also as a politician and diplomat. For a quarter century, Rudolf Chmel has been connected to the Czech cultural landscape, which we define in this context as the community around Slovak studies in Prague at the birth of which he stood, lending to it all his authority and experience as a literary theorist. His mark on Czech culture, however, is much deeper and more complex, of course. As a testa ment to this, we need look no further than to the great number of his aca demic and public activities within the broader Czech cultural landscape of the last quarter century. Each contribution to this volume, which we have assembled for the 8oth birthday of Rudolf Chmel, wishes to be an original expression of the authors’ personal experience of meeting and debating with Rudolf Chmel himself. Thus a generationally-diverse group of authors came together to create this single volume, including historians, literary and theater scientists,
linguists and political scientists from the Czech Re public as well as Slovakia and Poland. The Czech, Slovak and Polish language of the contributions themselves testifies to the deep Central European roots of Rudolf Chmel, who is at home not only in the Czech and Slovak publish ing landscape but also in the broader Central European context. Colleagues, friends, former students and doctoral students - none of them would have likely met had it not been for Rudolf Chmel. Many of them are connected with him through longstanding collegial friendships, which began in the year 1994 with the birth of Slovak studies as a field at the Czech university. There, in the beginning and during the academic years to come, the teacher met his students who, thanks to their mentor’s openness and enthusiasm, soon became their mentor’s equal partners in communication. As a teacher, Rudolf Chmel patiently accompanied his students during all of their pre-graduate and post-graduate studies and followed their progress even after they finished their studies and often shared his wisdom outside of the academic environment. Over time, the fruits of his many years of labor could be seen. The students of Rudolf Chmel matured into important professional positions in both academic and public fields and many of them became the kinds of authorities in their areas of focus thanks to Chmel who prepared them for their future posts during their years of study with him. We may find within a number of the contributions in this volume an array of challenges, impulses, and inspirations behind which Rudolf Chmel stood during his time spent with the contributors to this volume, be it as a teacher, colleague or friend. It is the very fruit of the contributors’ labor which is testament to the presence of Rudolf Chmel in the Czech cultural landscape. The Faculty of Arts of Charles University honored Chmel’s significance on the institutional level when, in 2017, it named him a member emeritus of its academic community. In „Salutations,“ the opening section of this monograph, the authors of the contributions focus on capturing the image of Rudolf Chmel as an inspiring intellectual working within the fields of Czech-Slovak, Slovak -Hungarian and broader Central European studies. Among the authors of the salutations are historian Michal Stehlík, editor of the Central European Forum and publishing house Salon Andrea Puková, and theatre studies scholar Ľubica Křenová.
„Salutations happens to assemble former students and doctoral students of Rudolf Chmel. Their academic work continues to reflect the influence of Chmel’s personality as well as his critical view in discussions of (not only) Central Europe. The next two sections of the book include academic papers from the field of Central European studies. In the first part, Central Europe appears in the historical and political context within the broad time frame between the 19th century and the post-Cold War years. In the first contribution, „The Absence of the Idea of Czechoslovak Identity in Czech Political Thinking of the First Republic („Absence představ o čechoslovakismu v českém poli tickém myšlení v době první republiky,“) the historian Jan Rychlík focuses on an ever-relevant theme present in Czech-Slovak relations since the year 1918. The author of the contribution is a historian in the Slovak studies de partment, having taken this role over from Ján Mlynářík. The author of the second contribution is also a historian, who is currently teaching Hungar ian history. Andrej Tóth’s study called „Historical and Political Comparison of the First Czechoslovak Republic and the Kingdom of Hungary ֊ Selected Aspects („Historicko-politická komparace první Československé repub liky a Maďarského království ֊ vybrané aspekty ) explains the, especially political, situation of the First Republic from a different angle. In the next 226
contribution, historian Petr Kaiéra, a long-term colleague of Rudolf Chmel, also engages the idea of a broader Central Europe. In his contribution entitled „Everyday Life, Ethnic Diversity, and Multiculturalism of Small Cities of Eastern Galicia Through the Eyes of Czech Travelers of the 19th Century“ („Každodennost, mnohoetničnost a mnohokulturnost malých východohaličských měst očima českých cestovatelů 19. století, ) the author examines travel writings and remarks upon what is typical for Central Eu rope, that is, the ethnic makeup of the small states of Central Europe. The historian, ethnologist, and political scientist Pavel Hynčica, former student of Rudolf Chmel, captures the youngest history of Slovakia in his contribu tion „Slovak Literary Figures in National Political Struggles after the Year 1989 й („Slovenští literáti v národně politických zápasech po roce 1989 ). The second half of the book consists of seven studies focusing on Cen tral Europe in a lingual, literary and cultural context. We encounter in it a broad literarily and historical view, which documents Czech-Slovak and Czech-Slovak-Hungarian relations. The languages of the contributions and literary-historical documents of this section are, besides the self-evident Czech and Slovak, also Polish, Hungarian and Latin. The lingual variety is accompanied by thematic variety as well. Magdalena Bystrzak and Aleksan dra Hudymač are part of the Polish-Slovak studies community and both are connected to the personality of Rudolf Chmel though their doctoral studies. The former’s contribution, entitled „In
Search of Continuity: On the ‘Slovak Complex’” („Hľadanie kontinuity. K slovenskému komplexu’”) the author focuses on the ever-relevant inspiration of Chmel’s intellectual world. In the latter’s contribution called „A Drama in Three Acts with an Epilogue: A Con tribution on a Romantic Legend of the Epistolary Epoch. On the Letters of Sam Bohdan Hroboň and Buhuslava Rajská“ („Drama ve třech aktech s epi logem. Příspěvek к milostné legendě epistolarni epochy. К dopisům Sama Bohdana Hroboně a Bohuslavy Rajské ) the author presents her current research topic which is connected with the Czech-Slovak cultural context. Evžen Gál and Simona Kolmanová are also among the long-term collabora tors of Rudolf Chmel in the area of Hungarian literature. In his contribution entitled „Overstepping Boundaries in the Life and Work of Anton Straka („Přešlapy hranic v životě a díle Antona Straky,“) Evžen Gál focused on the inter-war period connected with the cultural mission of Anton Straka in the Central European context. Simona Kolmanová in her piece „My Tank and a Translator’s Considerations („Můj tank a překladatelovy úvahy“) opens the issue of Czech to Hungarian translation. The last three contributions represent three generations of Chmel’s doctoral students or other students. Jana Pátková, a Prague-based Slovak-studies scholar, dedicates herself to the specificities of travel writing in her article „On the Issues of Diplomacy in Czech-Slovak and Slovak-Czech Travel Writing after the Codification of SUMMARY 227
the Slovak Language („K problematice diplomacie v česko-slovenských a slovensko-českých cestopisech po kodifikaci slovenštiny ) Jan Pišna, a Czech and Slovak studies scholar, focuses on the earlier era of Czech and Slovak literature. His contribution entitled „Slovak Works from the Stocks of the Strahov Library - Miscellanea and Varia („Slovacika z fondu Stra hovské knihovny - miscelánea a varia ) is, besides its theoretical core, a tes tament - implicitly rather than explicitly - to his long-term collaboration with Slovak studies in Prague. The framing sections of this collective monograph, the „Introduction and „Conclusion, are written by the long-term colleagues and closest col laborators of Rudolf Chmel, created with him the irreplaceable atmosphere of Slovak studies in Prague. The last text of the monograph is the contribu tion of Mira Nábělková „Counting Rings Around the Svit: Several Thoughts on the Occasion of the Rudolf Chmel’s Jubilee („Letokruhy okolo Svitu. Niekoľko tatranských zastavení pri jubileu Rudolfa Chmela ) in which she turns to Svit as the place of childhood and youth of Rudolf Chmel under the Tatra Mountains where, within the specific union of the national and mul ticultural traditions of the region, his personality had formed.
