Summaries Yulia V. SINEOKAYA Foreword. Everything is moved by love... The book you are holding in your hands is the story of philosophical unions whose creative work was formed with mutual love, of the unity of philosophy and Eros, of how philosophical texts are born from the intertwining of personal and creative fates. It is a chronicle of the passions of people who lived in different eras and different countries and worked in different thought paradigms. The poignant tragedy of all the life stories is overcome through joint creative work, the joy of communicating with a person of kindred spirit, of finding the meaning of life in passionate service to the chosen one and to one’s calling. No two essays, no two stories in this volume are alike. The book opens with the stories of love and work of married couples. Then follow essays about impossible love, about lovers doomed to be separated, and about those who were close and loving, but never became loved. The next body of texts is stories of forbidden love that challenges the social mores and involves a series of difficult and painful decisions lovers have to make. The book concludes with stories of spiritual love. It draws on rare archive materials, letters, personal notes, memoirs and diary jottings of philosophers. It contains fragments from academic papers never published in Russian before and letters of foreign thinkers. It is aimed both at historians of philosophy and at the broad lay audience. It may attract those who are interested in the lives of past thinkers and the history of how philosophical concepts were
conceived — the “biographies” of ideas and senses. The reader will find neither solace nor instruction in the vicissitudes of the heroes’ lives, instead he will learn how love-passion, love of someone to lean on, love-rapture, love-support, love-infatuation, love-service and love-friendship shape a philosophical tradition. Keywords: love and philosophical interests, friendship, act, family, mutual understanding, Eros, death, creative self-determination, religious creativity, intellectual history. Svetlana S. NERETINA The Concept of Love: Peter and Heloise The dramatic twists and turns of the love of the philosopher and theologian, the school master-dialectician Peter Abelard and his pupil Heloise who became his lover and eventually his wife, express the medieval (the 12th century) attitude to love as an ontological
558 Summaries principle of life based on love of God and claiming the whole of the human being. Love is associated with the creative element of the world and with the beginning of speech which can reflect it. The History of My Calamities by Abelard and his correspondence with Heloise is the first medieval narrative of private, intimate life. Both works reveal, on the one hand, the processes of the formation of scholasticism, the question-and-answer method underlying Abelards work Yes and No and, on the other hand, the meaning of an event complemented through subject-to-subject speech. Correspondence is a blend of theory and empiricism. The love act is assessed by those involved in it on the basis of the intention responsible for the deed. This is one of the main ideas of Abelards treatise Ethics, or Know Yourself. Keywords: history, dialectics, scholasticism, ethics, theology, master, poet, monk, correspondence, intention, act, disaster, consolation. Maria V. MIKHAILOVA Vyacheslav Ivanov and Lydia Zinovieva-Anibal: collapse of the ideal union or vivid image of happiness that could be? The article traces the evolution of the love between Vyacheslav Ivanov and Lydia Zinovieva-Aníbal from the time they met until the dramatic events following her death. The relationship is treated in terms of the phenomenon Sergey Averintsev described as “Symbolist marriage”. The author shows how marriage leads to the emergence of Ivanov’s concept of the new church in which Eros assumes a flesh-and-blood form. Theoretical propositions are shown as they manifest themselves in daily life.
Equal attention is given to the creative interaction of the couple and the actual manifestation of their feelings, the philosophical intensity being equally present in both. Keywords: the concept of love, Eros, the new church, creative self-determination, feminist intentions, Symbolist marriage. Olga R. DEMIDOVA In Search of the City of God : the Merezhkovskys and Fllosofovon religious justification of Revolution The article treats the phenomenon of collective creative activity by one of the most famous St Petersburg‘triple unions’ at the turn of the 19th — 20th centuries, the Merezhkovskys (Z. Gippius and D. Merezhkovsky) and D. Filosofov. Of the three collectively produced works, i.e. publicistk collections The Tzar and the Revolution (Paris, 1907) and TheKingdom of the Antichrist (Munich, 1921) and the play Makov Tsveí (1906). The main focus is on the Paris collection, the first among the works created as part of the trio’s general life and religious projects, reflecting their major ideas connected with their
Summaries concept of‘the new religious community” (novaya religioznaya obshestvennosť) and their understanding of the Russian revolution as a religiously grounded phenomenon. The analysis is carried out against a wide historical, cultural, philosophical background: the author uses an impressive number of fictional, non-fictional and academic sourcees drawing on Merezhkovsky’s and Filosofov’s memoirs, diaries, and letters. Keywords: Merezhkovskys, Filosofov,“triple union,” spiritual brotherhood, religion, religious, religious creativity, revolution, Europe, Russia, Tsar, church, state, Russian Orthodoxy, Catholicism, terrorism, freedom, slavery. Elena A.TAKHO-GODY The joy of suffering (Alexey Losev s philosophy of love) The article discusses the philosophy of love of the great Russian philosopher A. F. Losev (1893-1988). Unlike his spiritual master VI. Solovyov, Losev did not seek to systematically reflect on the love in his philosophical texts. In this regard, it is necessary to reconstruct Losev’s philosophy of love on the basis of his first publications in the 1910s, different types of ego-documents (first and foremost, his adolescent diaries and personal correspondence), satellite texts — his philosophical-musical fiction created in thel930s - 1940s after his arrest and camp detention. The analysis of these materials suggests that, according to Losev, true love is not a pleasure or a form of initiation of the joys of earthly existence, it is not only the problem of the “flesh” or “sex” (as it was perceived by V. V. Rozanov); it is an earthly projection of Divine Love,
one of the ways of ascension to the Heavenly Homeland through sacrifice and suffering. For Losev this conception of love is not an abstract speculation, nor is it just a subject for a literary piece of art, it is the foundation for building his own life strategies (spiritual marriage with V. M. Loseva, their joint taking of monastic vows). Keywords: A. F. Losev, V. M. Loseva, VI. Solovyov, V. Rozanov, adolescent diaries, personal correspondence, philosophical-musical fiction. Alexey P. KOZYREV Sergei Bulgakov and Yulia Reitlinger: on the history of spiritual love The article considers personal and creative relationships of Sergei Nikolaevich Bul gakov, a theologian, a philosopher and a priest and Yu. N. Reitlinger, an artist and an icon painter (whose monastic name was sister Ioanna). Beginning with their acquaintance in the Crimea in 1918 and until Father Sergius’s death in Paris in 1944, Yu. N. Reitlinger was spiritually close to Bulgakov, was his spiritual daughter; he regarded her creativity as one of topmost achievements of religious contemporary art. The article presents the material of S. N. Bulgakov and Yu. N. Reitlinger’s personal diaries, their correspondence and testi monies of their contemporaries. Along with mother Maria (Skobtsova), Yu. N. Reitlinger 559
560 Summaries is one of the most conspicuous participants in the spiritual life of the Russian emigration in the first half of the 20th century (Prague, Paris). The article also touches upon S. N. Bul gakovs philosophy of sex reflected in his works of the 1910s ֊ 1920s, his attitude towards V. V. Rozanov. Keywords: mens and womens, anthropology, sex, creativity, Wisdom of Good, icon, personal diary. Nelly V. MOTROSHILOVA Hanna Arendt and Heinrich Blücher: Love Based on Mutual Understanding This article, being an integral part of the authors publications on Hanna Arendt, is devoted to important years in her life and the life of her husband Heinrich Blücher (from 1940 until their deaths) The author concentrates on such characteristics of their love as mutual understanding (on Blüchers part it is his genuine responsibility as a man and husband), shared values and the ability to orient themselves in all the spheres of social and personal relationships; their profound interest in philosophy; a group of true family friends; the fact that Hanna Arendts husband was to her “a portable Heimat” (H. Heines expression). Keywords: family, mutual understanding between Hanna Arendt and Heinrich Blücher, support, love and philosophical interests; family friends. Daniil O. ARONSON The More Loving One : Wystan Auden and Hannah Arendt Poet Wystan Hugh Auden and political thinker Hannah Arendt became acquainted in 1958 and remained friends until Audens death in 1973. The story of their friendship, as well as that of their intellectual exchange, had its twists. The article attempts to clarify
the story of their personal relationship through their respective standpoints in their dispute on love and forgiveness, and vice versa. Keywords: Auden, Arendt, love, forgiveness, respect, public realm, political action. Pavel S. GUREVICH, Elvira M. SPIROVA Volumtuousness and Love of Wisdom (on the Heartfelt Secrets of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir) The article examines the relationship between the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and the writer Simone de Beauvoir. For many decades their friendship and love were
Summaries marked not only by joint creative work, but also by reflections on love as existence at its most thrilling. The article covers the following issues: how are Sartres philosophical ideas related to Simone de Beauvoir? Do they reflect the dramaturgy of their own emotional and erotic relationship? The authors of the article believe that there is no doubt about that. Without Beauvoir there would have been no Sartre. At least not the Sartre we know. The passion of one induced philosophical insights of the other. At the same time the authors consider the version according to which many of Sartre’s ideas actually belong to Beauvoir. The theme of freedom plays a considerable role in their philosophical reflections. Both believed that modern society was prone to slavish mentality and claimed that freedom should not just be recognized, but worshipped. In their opinion, marriage and family did not allow one to realise his/her own unlimited freedom. They consider these concepts to be outdated and burdensome both for man and woman. But in their understaning of the essence of love these kindred spirits diverge. Beauvoir envisages love from a purely emotional angle. As for Sartre, he takes a more rational view assessing the “transcendence” (existence) of love. Every person, they believed, had to be master of his/her own destiny. Betrayal of this existential principle may take two forms: masochism and sadism. Keywords: human existentials, love, freedom, the Other, human being, sadism, masochism, suffering, sexuality, desire. Anna A. KOSTIKOVA Daniel, Mathieu, Hervé: Three Writings
of Michel Foucault Passion Love and passion are one of the subjects of Michel Foucault’ philosophical interest, his revolutionary rethinking. Today those whom he loved, continue not only this story of passion, but also a specific discourse to describe it — thanatography. Keywords: modern philosophy, French modern philosophy, Michel Foucault, discourse, sexuality, writing. Grigory V. BONDARENKO Bengal Nights: Mircea Eliade and Maitreyi Devi Mircea Eliade (1907-1986), now known as a scholar of religious studies and a Tra ditionalist thinker, wrote in 1933 in the Romanian language his novel Maitreyi devoted to the vivid experience of living and studying in India. Eliadės Maitreyi is not only and not so much an erotic story of the tragic love of a European scholar for an indigenous woman. With Maitreyi’s help Mircea/Allan tries to stay in India, to become an Indian, to convert to Hinduism which at some point paradoxically seems to him to be the highest level of Christianity. For a young scholar, Maitreyi serves as a guide to the world of In- 561
562 Summaries dian traditions. More than forty years later, in 1974, Maitreyi Devi (1914-1990) writes in Bengali her answer Na Hanyate (It Does not Die...), a biographical novel later translated into English. The title of her book Na Hanyate (It Does not Die... ) is a phrase taken from The Bhagavad Gita (2:20). The whole utterance in English translation sounds as follows: “Unborn, permanent, eternal, ancient, he does not die when the body dies”. The novel not only concerns immortal Atman but also eternal love. Keywords: Mircea Eliade, religious studies, Hinduism, fiction, poetry, Maitreyi Devi, India, Atman, Bengal. Alexey A. KARA-MURZA The Fourth Meeting: Vladimir Solovyov and Nadezhda Auer on the shores of the Bay of Naples (spring 1876) The article describes the stay of the Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov in Sorrento near Naples in the spring of 1876, where he wrote important fragments of his treatise Sophia (in French) which would provide the basis for his grandiose philosophical system. In Sorrento he met Nadezhda Auer, a married woman traveling in Italy. His love for her would leave a strong imprint on his work and would over time develop into a loyal long-term friendship that ended only with the philosophers death. Keywords: Vladimir Solovyov, Nadezhda Auer, Italy, Sorrento, creativity, love, friendship. Ksenia V.VOROZHIKHINA The Philosopher s Accursed Incident : Lev Shestov and Varvara Malakhiyeva-Mirovich The article considers the causes of the psychological and worldview crisis experienced by Lev Shestov in 1895, which made him renounce his idealistic
philosophy and take the path of groundlessness and adogmatism; it also traces Shestov’s evolution as a philosopher beginning with his early works on Shakespeare and Vladimir Solovov. Varvara Malakhiyeva-Mirovich, a journalist, a translator and a Silver Age poet, attests that Shestov’s philosophy of tragedy was born of his personal drama. His meeting with Malakhiyeva-Mirovich left a distinctive mark on the poet’s views and his creative work: she embraced his ideas of “creation out of nothing”, “the seventh day of Creation”, and hopelessness as the source of hope. Keywords: Lev Shestov, Malakhiyeva-Mirovich, People’s Will group, Tolstoyism, God-seeking, Hamlet, “creation out of nothing”, “diversity of religious experience”.
Summaries Igor A. EBANOIDZE Kierkegaard s Hoola-Hoop, or Regina Olsen as the Gorgon of Kierkegaard s philosophy Taking as an example one of Soren Kierkegaards letters to his mistress Regina Olsen, the author demonstrates the strategies of various discourses in the texts of the Danish philosopher that characterize his eccentric manner of writing which constantly swings between approximation and distancing. Keywords: Kierkegaard’s philosophy, indirect communication, mirror optics, distancing and engagement, excentric letter, leap, demonic. Yulia V.SINEOKAYA Friedrich Nietzsche and Lou Salome: On crests of waves of life The story of love between Friedrich Nietzsche and Lou Salome is told against the broad context of the German philosophers oeuvre. Events are chronicled on the basis of Nietzsche’s letters to Lou Salome, his correspondence with friends and relations and the testimony of contemporaries and researchers of the body of work left Nietzsche and Salome. The author believes that Nietzsche’s favorite legend of Ariadne from ancient Greek mythology is the key to the tragic vicissitudes of a love triangle involving Friedrich Nietzsche, Lou Salome and Paul Rèe. For Nietzsche his love for Lou Salome turned his own life into a Greek mystery whose protagonists were Ariadne (Lou Salome), Theseus (Paul Rèe) and Dionysus (Friedrich Nietzsche himself). The plot comes down to Dionysus freeing Ariadne with Theseus’ approval. The passionate, in many ways tragic and searing relationship, where the impulse of love blended with the brilliance of mind, lasted only eight months, from
April to December of 1882. The trail of gossip and rumour stretching over decades proved to be much more enduring than the romance itself. Keywords: existential experiment, love story, Nietzsche’s philosophy, perpetual return, cultural identity, Dionysus and Ariadne. Igor A. EBANOIDZE Love as Cherished Solitudes (Lou Salome, Rainer Marla Rilke, Marina Tsvetaeva) The article explores the reception of ideas of R. M. Rilke and F. Nietzsche in S. Frank’s ethics of love. The Austrian poet, as well as the German thinker, connected the biographical context of these ideas with Lou Salome, a woman who left her mark not only on his fate, but also on the fate of Nietzsche. In the last year of his life, Rilke relives these ideas anew in his epistolary contact with M. Tsvetaeva. Keywords: phenomenology, mysticism, transtsendention, absolute, emancipation, love, ethics, love to distant, loneliness, communication. 563
564 Summaries Pavel S. GUREVICH, Elvira M. SPIROVA Death is not the last mystery of life (The romance between Sabina Spielrein and Carl Gustav Jung) The article uses documentary materials and scholarly texts to recreate the story of the romantic relationship between Sabina Spielrein and Carl Gustav Jung. The love affair that lasted several decades made an imprint on their thinking and led them to individual and shared discoveries. Spielrein belongs to the galaxy of outstanding representatives of the psychoanalytic school. Her scientific legacy merits a thorough study. The slings and arrows of her life prevented her from receiving full recognition. The authors of the article try to redress that injustice. The article breaks new ground being the first attempt in Russian literature to give a thorough analysis of Spielrein’s theoretical achievements and prove her claim to having pioneered some basic ideas of psychoanalysis. Zigmund Freud himself gave her credit for promoting the Thanatos concept. The article also speaks of love that consumed these two people and influenced their creative endeavors. Keywords: psychoanalysis, Sabina Spielrein, love, death, hysterical temperament, Eros, Thanatos, projection, symbolism, identity Anatoly V.CHERNYAYEV In you I actually experience the image of wholeness! : the reception of V. S. Solovyev s philosophy of love in the love friendship relations between M. K. Morozova and E. N. Trubetskoy The article attempts to give a twin historical-philosophical portrait of Evgeny Trubetskoy and Margarita Morozova. Drawing on their correspondence and
joint activities in the Puť religious-philosophical group, it seeks to demonstrate the importance of personal relations in generating philosophical ideas, developing philosophical culture and implementing socio-cultural projects in Russia in the early 20th century. Keywords: E. N. Trubetskoy, M. K. Morozova, V. S. Solovyov, Russian religious renaissance, the philosophy of politics, Puť religious-philosophical group. Vladimir K. KANTOR A mystical ban. Fyodor Stepun and Anna Obolenskaya (the Russian Abelard and Heloise) In his article V.Kantor describes an unusual phenomenon: the correspondence between a man and a woman which became a fact of history and culture. The love letters of the philosopher Fyodor Stepun and Princess Anna Obolenskaya, an artist, rightly belong
Summaries to the series of romances that opens with the names of Pierre Abelard and Heloise. The 20th century was an age of social, political and human catastrophes. Those who survived and retained their dignity and ability to love in those gruesome times deserve the attention of people of culture. Keywords: Stepun, Obolenskaya, Russia, Germany, Dresden, Munich, love, death. Vladimir I. SHARONOV Karsavin to Skrzhinskaya: lt was you who linked my metaphysics with my biography and life in general... Drawing on the archive documents not easily accessible to researchers, the author reconstructs the history of relationship between Lev Platonovich Karsavin and Elena Cheslavovna Skrzhinskaya and their reflétions in the books Nodes Petropolitanae and Poem of Death containing the main ideas of Karsavins metaphysics. The article suggests the author’s vision of the specificity of Karsavins religious thought with respect to the theme of faith and disbelief of modern man. Keywords: Lev Karsavin, Elena Skrzhinskaya, Pyotr Suvchinsky, Marina Yudina, God, Christianity, religiosity, dogmatics, democratic, mysticism, creative love, metaphysics. Tamara B. DŁUGACH Voltaire and the divine Émilie Voltaire met Baroness Émilie du Châtelet in Paris, in the late 1720s. She was his life’s companion for sixteen years. She was an outstanding woman who was interested in natural sciences and mathematics. She and Voltaire spent sixteen years at her Sire estate on the border with Lorraine. There Voltaire wrote his historical work An Essay on Universal History, the Manners, and Spirit of Nations, the
preface to his Philosophy of History, The Virgin of Orleans, several dramas and historical works. It was there that his concept of enlightened absolutism was taken shape. Émilie did not only share his academic pursuits, but took care of him, protected him and showed concern for his health. For the first time Voltaire found a home and a like-minded woman he loved. The years spent with Émilie were full of joy and creative endeavor. After Émilie’s sudden death in 1749, Voltaire left for Prussia to Friedrich II. Keywords: history, literature, people, enlightened absolutism, experiences, mores, theatre, drama, opinion. Tamara B. DŁUGACH Denis Diderot and Sophie Volland Denis Diderot met his love Sophie Volland in 1757. At the time he was known only as the publisher of the Encyclopedia. But their correspondence lasted for fifteen years, and 565
566 Summaries they had some personal meetings, so that Sophie knew about ah the events in Diderots life, his successes and failures. Communicating with her he became a famous philosopher interested in the problems of living and non-living matter, the development of matter and its properties. Diderot wrote to Sophie about everything, his domestic affairs, his work on the Encyclopedia and his trip to Russia. With her feminine flair she helped him to cope with his business and domestic problems. One can see from Diderots letters how welleducated were French women in the 18th century and how they contributed to creating the cultural atmosphere of Paris. Keywords: matter, living matter, non-living matter, travel, necessity, articles, thought, friendship, love, interest. Arina V.SIMONYAN Marguerite Porete and Guiard of Cressonessart On May 31,1310 the two-year long legal proceedings — a trial of two persons indicted for heresy — ended in Paris. The heretics were a certain Marguerite, named “Porete”, and Guiard of Cressonessart, who called himself “the Angel of Philadelphia”. She was condemned as an author of the book “full of dangerous beliefs and errors”, while he got a life-sentence as her advocate, who disseminated a teaching that threatened the au thority of the Church. Only seven centuries later, in the second quarter of the twentieth century, the book was identified as “The Mirror of Simple Souls” — one of the greatest works in the tradition of spiritual literature of the Middle Ages. The story of Marguerite and Guiard came down to us only in the trial documents, and it is
still an open question whether they knew each other before the tragic events of 1310, and also whether there was a mutual influence in terms of ideas. Keywords: Marguerite Porete, “The Mirror of Simple Souls”, Guiard of Cresson essart, “Angel of Philadelphia”, beguines and beghards, medieval philosophical literature, medieval mystic, heresy in medieval Christianity. Yulia E. FEDOROVA Rābi a al- Adawiya and Hasan al-Başrî: Sufi Conversations about Love and Truth The article deals with the phenomenon of Sufi assembly (majlis) where key philo sophical problems were usually discussed. They included such topics as the relationship between man and God, love of God, experience of Gods contemplation and knowledge, Sufi virtues and various aspects of spiritual practice. The main subject of the study is the numerous stories about the conversations between Rābia al-Adawiya (713/714-801) and Hasan al-Basri (642-768), brought together in poems (Manţiq al-ţayr, Ilāhīnāma) and the anthology Memorial of God’s Friends of Farid al-Din Attār, the major Persian poet and
Summaries Sufi thinker of the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Rābi‘a al-‘Adawiya was the first person who dared to describe her relationship with God in terms of love, her spiritual experi ence was perceived later as the ideal model of a mystical union with the Divine Beloved. Keywords: Philosophy, Islam, Sufism, Asceticism, Love, Truth, God, Farid al-Din Attār, Rābi‘a al-Adawiya, Hasan al-Basri. Leyli G. LAH UTI Tales of love as a way of discussing philosophical truths (in Attar s poem Nahi-nameh ) This paper attempts to explore the philosophical basis of the stories, embedded within the Sufi poem by the Persian poet Farid ad-Din Attar (XII-XIII) Ilahi-nameh, with the focus on the stories dedicated to various kinds of love. It is shown how these stories develop into a narrative unfolding of some of the Sufi concepts such as the concept of the “lower” (material) world of matter and the “transcendent” spiritual world of mysteries, the concept of “animal soul” ( nafs) that belongs to the lower world and the “higher soul” that belongs to the spiritual world, the concept of true and metaphorical love, as well as the concept of human beauty as the reflection of Divine beauty. (Translations of the cor responding fragments are included.) Keywords: Sufi philosophy, Persian poetry, Farid ad-Din Attar, true and metaphori cal love, the beauty of man as a reflection of Divine beauty. Ilshat R. NASYROV Arab Dantes and their Beatrices (Early Islamic Arabic poetry in the context of Muslim courtliness) Arabic lyrical poetry flourished in early Islam (the 7th - 8th centuries)
and was greatly enriched in terms of genre and themes. There developed new genres of poetry, such as Udhri (which extolled virtuous love), Hijazi (“Umari”) in Western Arabia with its moderate Epicureanism and the erotic Kufi. Studies of Arabic love poetry of the period hardly take any notice of the impact of Muslim courtliness on the oeuvre of Arabic poets. Muslim courtliness (zarf) was expressed in exquisite demeanour, elevated perception of the world, a strict code of conduct and a set of rules for treating women. The phenomenon reveals similarities with medieval European courtliness and courtly love which can be traced back to Dante Alighieri s poems. This paper aims to examine the impact of Muslim courtliness on Arabic love poetry of the early Islamic period. Keywords: Arabic love poetry, Udhri ghazal, Umari ghazal, Muslim courtliness (zarf), Dante Alighieri. 567
