6. Summary Text and contrastive analysis of content clauses in English and Albanian in different types of texts aims to reveal some of the main structural, functional and semantic features of these subordinate clauses in English and their translation equivalents in Albanian, within a sentence and beyond it: on the paragraph level. Content clauses in English belong to the largest and most versatile group of subordinate clauses. Their functions and their functional implications are highly complex. The complexity of content clauses is notable even in their translated equivalent clauses in Albanian, which (when translated into Albanian) belong to different structural and functional fonns. The overall analysis of Content Clauses in English and Albanian considers the most recent researches and publications in the field of syntax. Moreover, it combines the research and publications with those belonging to what is known as traditional granunatology of English language. Both systems of subordinate clauses in English and Albanian have been described and classified thoroughly. Syntactic studies in Albanian are less advanced than in English, and university grammars of Albanian pertain to traditional ones from the previous century. These grammars consist of many confusing elements regarding their selective study criteria. However, a significant amount of individual efforts which have resulted in several published scientific papers and short studies, have paved the way for new trends in Albanian linguistics. This research aims to make a modest theoretical and practical contribution to
such studies. It is not the first Albanian - English contrastive study which analyses the sentence and subordinate clauses on the structural, functional and semantic level. However, it is the first English - Albanian contrastive study which relies on the recent classification of subordinate clauses given by Huddleston Pullum and the first study which analyses the context and the background of the sentence and subordinate clauses on a higher hierarchical rank — on the paragraph level. The analysis extends to both English and Albanian, and it aims to identify the similarities and differences between sentence subordination in these two languages. Research results differ from findings obtained from sentence-level analysis when the analysis is conducted on the paragraph level. This fact sheds new light on the area of Albanian linguistic studies, and the importance of the present study 241
relies heavily on the contribution it is making to the Albanian linguistic studies. The linguistic method used in this stud)՛ is comparative, synchronic and descriptive - in both levels of analysis. Linguistic units have not been analy zed simply as linguistic structures, but they have been described and treated with their function and meaning jointly. The thorough analysis has been illustrated in several ways to offer the reader a clearer and more thorough picture. Tree diagrams and structural formulas are included for almost every functional type, in both languages. Tree diagram analyses and text grammar analyses on paragraph-level are not so frequent in Albanian. Therefore, they are an innovation of their kind in syntactic studies on sentence level and beyond. Unlike in English, there is no structural and semantic classification of subordinate clauses in Albanian. Therefore, the translations of these clauses into Albanian were identified first and then conclusions were drawn according to the results obtained out of their comparison. Since there is no standard method of contrasting one linguistic system to another, the translation method (by comparing the translations of Content Clauses in Albanian and vice-versa) has been used. The selected linguistic corpus resulted in the overall conclusions of this research. A detailed theoretical description of Content Clauses in English and their translation equivalents in Albanian has been given. The definition of content clauses includes their structure, subordinato!·, the semantics of the verb, as well as their function w ithin
the sentence. The text grammar concepts, text categories, and text units have been included in this study. Moreover, a relevant theoretical background that is used for the paragraph-level analysis of content clauses has been incorporated. This study has resulted in several outcomes. First. Content Clauses in Albanian are reviewed within the scope of Subject, Object, Predicative Complement, Modifier, and Adjunct (Adverbial) Clauses. This is due to the functional classification of subordinate clauses in Albanian grammars. Second, regardless of the fact that superficially both languages have the same linguistic means of expression for text grammar relations, structural differences between English and Albanian influence the divergences within the framework of paragraph analysis. Different meanings implied by verb tenses in English and Albanian reflect on the different translations of subordinate clauses from one language to another. Moreover, the structure of Albanian as an inflected language, in comparison to English, creates an additional 242
stylistic versatility when translating various structures from one language to another in different types of text. Consequently, in the process of trying to preserve the overall meaning of the text, they are unable to preserve other aspects of the structures, important for the present study. Moreover, there are instances when the translated version lacks one long paragraph or the whole page from the original version, or the translated version of the text consists of many syntactic and semantic mistakes. Examples of such ‘bad translations are some of the sentences used in our corpus (see Chapter 3 of the present study). These “bad translation” structures have been analyzed thoroughly and alternate translations have been proposed instead. One of the extralinguistic reasons for analyzing texts linguistically is to overcome translation barriers for everyday purposes among language specialists and common users of a language. This study has attempted to include all the relevant issues regarding the Content Clause analysis, within the sentence and the paragraph level. However, it can be considered as a modest and initial contribution to better comprehend such complex and important issues with theoretical and practical implications. 243
