Summary Božena Rothmayerová Horneková and Alice Masaryková Confidante and Mentor (1926-1939) The work of the textile artist Božena Rothmayerová, née Horneková, has recently been the subject of increased attention following the opening to the public of the house of the Rothmayer family in the Prague suburb of Břevnov. This house was constructed for his family in 1928-1929 by Otto Rothmayer, a pupil and assistant of the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. In previous scholarly articles and essays devoted to the life and work of Božena Rothmayerová Horneková, primarily published during the 1980s, her activities in textile art were presented largely in the context of the chief biographical events in her life, predominantly her childhood in the family of the renowned lace-maker Marie Horneková and her subsequent study of lace-crafting at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. At the same time, these authors mention in passing Božena’s stay in the provincial town of Velké Meziříčí, where she was employed as a schoolteacher, followed by her more artistically fruitful period in Brno, during which she worked with (among other figures) the architects Jan Vaněk and Zdeněk Rossmann, including preparations for the Exhibition of Contemporary Culture in Czechoslovakia, held at the newly constructed Brno Exposition Grounds in 1928 to mark the 10th anniversary of the independent republic. It was for this occasion that Božena Rothmayerová, still using her maiden name Horneková, designed a collection of practical fashion for women, a series of trouser suits later published in the catalogue for
the subsequent exhibition Civilizovaná žena. Jak se má kultivovaná žena oblékati [The Civilised Woman: How a Cultivated Woman Should Dress] in 1929. Several designs reproduced from this collection were on display in the exhibit held in the Study and Documentation Centre Norbertov of The City of Prague Museum from 1 November 2018 until 29 September 2019. 306
Among the other milestones in the creative life of the young artist is, of course, her marriage to architect Otto Rothmayer, which took place on 21 December 1930 in Brno, after which the young couple settled in Prague. After the birth of her son Jan in 1932, Božena Rothmayerová renewed her pedagogic activity, taking a position as instructor at the State Institute of Schooling for Home Industry, where among her notable achievements she won recognition as one of the founders of modern lace-making. In her later years, she was active In the field of jewellery design and restoration of historic fabrics. Such are the previously known facts from the Božena Rothmayerová’s career. The present publication is intended to present the results of new research into the artist’s life, using surviving documents, correspondence, and Božena’s own writings from 1926 to 1939 - revealing new knowledge that indicates a close connection between Božena Rothmayerová’s artistic work and the activities of the daughter of President Tomáš G. Masaryk, Alice Masaryková. Between 1912 and 1914, Alice Masaryková taught at a girls lyceum in Prague 7, and by sheer coincidence was for the school year 1913-1914 the head teacher of young Božena’s class. This situation was recalled by both women during very unusual circumstances twelve years later. From newly acquired documents from the holdings of the Rothmayer family, it has now become known that as early as the end of 1921 (and not, as was previously believed, only in 1929) the then twenty-two-year-old Božena Horneková became engaged to the architect Otto
Rothmayer, seven years her senior. And yet, as we know well, the young couple remained unwed for the next ten years. For Otto, the year 1921 meant the overwhelming professional commitment of the restoration project for Prague Castle most of his time was spent at work, particularly with the complication of the departure of the Castle restoration’s chief architect, Jože Plečnik, from Prague to Ljubljana. In January 1922, Božena wrote to her close family friend Václav Král: “Now my life is quite different. Otto has a lot of work, which takes up the evenings that once belonged to me. I’m now alone.” Not wishing to burden her relationship with Rothmayer through feelings of isolation, Božena decided to continue with her own personal career. For this reason, as of 1 September 1922, she joined the educational society “Světlá” (Light) in Velké Meziříčí as a temporary instructor for drawing, embroidery and decorative work. One year later, on 1 September 1923, she was confirmed as a definitive specialised teacher at vocational schools for “female professions” in Velké Meziříčí, holding this position officially until 30 August 1928. While his fiancée worked in Velké Meziříčí, Otto Rothmayer expended almost superhuman effort in facing the serious tasks necessary for the restoration of Prague Castle as well as the presidential residence at the chateau in Lány. As of 1923, at the decision of President Masaryk, he had been working independently, yet under the close supervision and the polite yet uncompromising gaze of “Miss Doctor” Alice Masaryková (this title remained the designation for
Alice Masaryková even later, when the cooperation with the Rothmayers had transformed into personal friendship). Alice was, in fact, fully in charge of managing the work connected with the realisation of the new presidential quarters in Prague Castle. In addition, Rothmayer found himself in the unenviable role of an unofficial negotiator 307
regarding the personal relations between Plečnik and “Miss Doctor”, detailed eloquently in the extensive correspondence between Rothmayer and Plečnik from these years. In 1923, following one of Rothmayer’s many visits to Lány, Masaryk expressed his wish that the management of the presidential office confirm that all work regarding the rebuilding of the Castle and its surrounding gardens be addressed exclusively by Rothmayer, who would be acting in these matters for the original architect, Plečnik. The enormous burden of responsibility brought by this assignment, and the increasing demands of the work, weighed upon Rothmayer to such an extent that he himself admitted an inability to combine this demanding task with his obligations to his own family. The crucial point for the young couple came in 1926, when Rothmayer, after a long visit to Plečnik in Ljubljana, nearly broke down from overwork. Alice Masaryková grasped the implications of the situation, and sent Rothmayer a written message of reassurance: “Everything is in order; just be calm. Always keep your mind on the goal: the Castle as the fortress of the Living God. (...) I’m sending your Christmas Eve “visitation” [i.e. Božena author’s note] a scarf. It is old, with an important history.” This scarf was, on the part of the president’s daughter, a helping hand granted to the young couple. Responding to Alice’s gesture, Božena wrote her a letter reminding “Miss Doctor” that she had once been her pupil in school. In her own words: “It is interesting that this valuable item with its important history has come into my
hands. You could not have known to whom you were giving this object, and I can now admit that it was my wish for all of my school-years to receive something from you.” Of great importance, as well as undeniable significance in the later development of the relation between the former pupil and teacher, was Alice’s answer, in which she not only confirmed that she did remember the schoolgirl, but also sent Božena a great and binding proof of her trust: the original manuscript of one of the letters that she sent her mother Charlotte during her imprisonment in Vienna during World War I. The letter is a beautiful and powerful confession of deep and genuine love for her mother, a recognition of parental authority and a thanks for her exacting upbringing that led her to humility towards the essential human values. What reason led Alice to send this intimate confession to a woman whom she only vaguely recalled from the classroom many years previously? Perhaps one explanation could be Alice’s decision to take firmly into hand the future course of this modern couple, the Castle architect Rothmayer and his fiancée, comprehending the potential of these two talented young people, their sensitivity and their work ethic. The Rothmayers could, in Alice Masaryková’s view, become a model couple for a modern dual-career marriage, and an example for the newly emerging democratic society. Practically immediately after the exchange of these letters and symbolic gifts, there began for Božena Horneková a time of intensive cooperation with Alice Masaryková, who became for the young artist a mentor,
supporter and advisor. At times, Alice almost went too far in trying to organise Božena’s personal life, yet always with pure intensions, and bearing much fruit in the later independent creative oeuvre of Božena Rothmayerová. During her several years working in Velké Meziříčí, Božena Horneková was invited repeatedly on working visits to the Masaryk family residences in Slovakia, in Topoľčianky and later Bystrička, where Alice preferred to spend her holidays. Here, she was given 308
tasks involving the completion of interiors for the presidential family using textiles, creating practical table linens, or even designing sets of clothing for Alice Masaryková. At the same time, in Velké Meziříčí she participated in work for the Red Cross and assisted Alice in organising the “children’s colonies” in Slovakia. During the 1930s, Božena Horneková, though after 1931 using her married surname of Rothmayerová, joined into the organisation of other projects by Alice Masaryková, such as the competition for designs for the most beautiful folk costumes in the Slovak village of Čičmany or the building of a collection of folk embroidery, caps and dresses, in which Alice Masaryková found a reflection of popular tradition necessary for the building of national self-confidence and certainty, values essential for the emergence of a democratic self-awareness for the citizens of the new state. Intensive cooperation and support on the part of Alice Masaryková continued even after 1931, the year when the Rothmayers settled permanently in Prague. Alice took great interest in Božena’s pregnancy and parenting, assisting not only with advice but also financially. Božena Rothmayerová and her husband were eventually assigned the commission of adapting and furnishing the new flat of Alice Masaryková in the Pohořelec neighbourhood just outside Prague Castle, close to Loretánské náměstí. The pair also worked on the furnishings for the new house built for Alice in Bystrička. This intense yet inspiring collaboration lasted up until March 1939, when Alice Masarykova emigrated to Britain
shortly before the outbreak of World War II. In this year, the correspondence ends. No other collaboration has been documented, yet a reflection of Alice’s mentoring was evident even years later in further work by Božena Rothmayerová, whose oeuvre up until the end was indissolubly linked to the idea of the social task of art, to an awareness of service for the wide public and the wider society. Her production from the years after continued to be tied to the needs of the greater sphere, just as Alice would have herself insisted. Markéta Vinglerová, a curator at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, discusses in detail in the chapter entitled “From the Collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts. Božena Rothmayerová Horneková the personal collection of Božena Rothmayerová Horneková, consisting of around 100 items. These objects are primarily textile work, such as hand-made lace doilies, table coverings from the period before World War II and immediately afterward, authorial jewellery from the 1960s and 1970s in which Rothmayerová Horneková combined natural stones with macramé technique, as well as a number of authentic items of clothing from the artist’s personal wardrobe. In the museum s textile collection, there is also an intriguing portfolio of drawings that Božena Horneková, prior to her marriage, created for the famous Brno exposition The Civilised Woman in 1929. 309
