Summary Journalists from Poland, Russia, and Sweden, and their vision of the profession are the subject of the monograph. The author analyzed in detail the journalistic culture based on empirical research with a simultaneous use of theoretical studies and research conducted by other scholars. The study includes an analysis, conducted in a comparative way, of the journalists’ perception of the profes sional standards, ethics, and the features of professionalism. The author used data obtained in the project “Journalism in change: Professional journalistic culture in Poland, Russia and Sweden” in which she participated. The following research methods were used in the book: quantitative, qualitative, and comparative. The first chapter presents the role and significance of the media in the social system, as well as the characteristic features of the journalistic profession. A lot of attention is paid to journalistic professionalism, professional standards and ethics. The specificity of the journalistic culture in each country is also described in this part of book. The development and the state of research on journalists in Poland, Russia, and Sweden is the topic of the second chapter. The author describes research conducted in analyzed countries and in this context presents research material, research methods and foundations of the project which provided empirical data. The next three chapters are empirical and show the impact of selected factors on the perception ofjournalism. The third chapter is dedicated to the impact ofjournalistic education on the attitude to
professional ethics. There is analysis of issues related to political commitment, cooperation with PR specialists and accepting gifts, verification of information and perception of ethics in the profession. The next part of the book presents the topic of the vision of the profession in the context of the age ofjournalists in the three countries. In this part of the book the author presents journalists’ attitude to journalistic education, their perception of duties and their implementation and evaluation of the quality of journalism in different age groups. The last chapter is devoted to the impact of employ ment conditions, like size of the editorial board, forms of employment and income ofjournalists, on the perception of the profession and journalistic standards. In the empirical part of the monograph a portrait of journalists from each of the studied countries is created simultaneously and they are presented in a comparative manner. The last part of the monograph is a summary in which the author presents the main conclu sions, verifies if these countries share a common vision of the profession and its standards or if there are many approaches to journalism and the norms in the media and shows the impact of selected factors on journalists’ perception of their profession. The author also indicates the subjects which she would like to address in the future.
